It's in Claud, which is somewhat further east. You can find info at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1730361 if you like. I'm not at home right now, so I can't check my other resource to see if there's another Good Hope not listed in USGS. I know there's a Goodship in Millbrook, but it's much newer than the date you cite. If you want to send me direct email, I'll be happy to check and see if I can find anything else in my book at home near the location you describe. = Steve =

    1. [ALElmore] Re: [AL-TALLAPOOSA] Tallapoosa Co. AL death records
    2. Helene
    3. We spent several days in Wetumpka in 2 or 3 days. Linda was an invaluable source! Her books are worth every penny I paid for them. Se had records that were in the unfiled records in the basement and surprised us with records we would not have found. I have referred her to many. We have found that if you just ask to look at the ledgers to get information, and let them know you will keep track of your copies and not be a pest, that they will gladly show you how to use the copier, that you can be there all day just staying out of their way and if you have an occasional question they will work with you. We had no problem in Macon or Tallapoosa counties. The courthouses are busy with the normal day to day work and if you aren't 'a quiet mouse in the corner' you can be a problem for them to have to contend with. Let me add that we have researched courthouses for years and it's dirty work(wear old clothes), but it is so worthwhile. You'll find things they don't even know they have. The old probate papers are worth their weight in gold. However, check the conveyance records, both direct and indirect and be sure your people are there before you start going through everything. We have been througha lot of the counties and I might add several times. Macon, Elmore, Chambers, Madison, Jackson, Lee and others and felt more than welcome. The only place we have ever had problems was in Texas where they had put all births and deaths on computer and as the late ones were interspersed with the early ones, the right to privacy was their concern, so we could not check the indexes without having them get each once separately. We gave up there. Remember that the records are public records and you do have a right to check them, just don't get in their hair. 1. [ALElmore] Benjamin Franklin Crockett
    2. I have an index of cemeteries in Elmore Co., AL where Rose Hill Cemetery is located. This index is fairly comprehensive and lists the persons buried in known cemeteries; it has a good listing of Rose Hill. I looked for your ancestor and did not find Benjamin Franklin Crocket listed as being buried in Rose Hill nor in any other cemetery in the book. However, he could've been missed in the listing or his stone could've been unreadable. Good luck! Diane

The Probate Office is located one block north of the Courthouse on the corner of Court St. and 5th St. in downtown Prattville, across from the offices of DHR and Public Health You do not have to be a member of AGS to attend our meetings. 1. [ALElmore] Hurd - Gray Cemetery
    2. Brenda Felder
    3. The new info is great. In my notes, I have letters written early '80's stating this cemetery is on plantation land owned first by the Gray family who were in then Autauga as early as 1818. Those of us searching the Gray line in this area feel this land was originally the property of George Gray and inherited by at least one son, John who was to take care of and see to his younger brother James after George's death in 1830. The Amelia Taylor buried in cemetery was a Gray before marriage but have not proven if she is child of George or sister. I believe John and his wives ? to be buried here as well as others in family such as Jeremiah his son and also Jesse Gray, a brother to John who is "missing" from the census about the same time as John's death. Any furthur thoughts on this by anyone welcomed!!! Brenda Gray Felder

The location of this cemetery is off what's named Crenshaw Road. And my conversation with a black lady residing in the area (on whose property the cemetery now apparently sits) indicates that the Crenshaws were an affluent white family in the area. I think I recall her telling me that her father was named Hurd and is buried there along with other family members. She tells too that some people claim there are Indians and/or descendants of Indians (possibly marrying with the local whites) buried there. = Steve =

Caroline and I have corresponded off the board about making a visit to this cemetery, but the weekends that one or the other of us hasn't had some other engagement keep experiencing rains that make it unwise to go into that area. I'm still hoping for an open weekend when we can visit and see if there's more than this, and just to go there because I want to see it in person. I have information that the land it's on is probably part of a larger area that was once owned by one of my own direct Gray ancestors. = Steve =

    1. [ALElmore] Wadford, Watford, Hubbard, Haven, Havin 1800's Alabama
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford, Watford, Hubbard, Haven, Havin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VS.2ADI/925 Message Board Post: I am desperately looking for information regarding my great grandfather, William Henry W(h)adford. My g-grandfather was supposedly born in Alabama on September 15th during the Civil War years and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He possibly was sent to live with an uncle in Florida, but ran away with cousins when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas with another supposed uncle. I am able to trace him from 1885, Rains County, Texas to Delta County, Colorado where he is buried. The cousins may have been his mothers' family. The first record I can find of him is his marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. They had a son, William Henry Whadford Jr. born Oct. 15, 1886 in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, Texas and Mary soon died afterwards. My g-grandfather then married Sminthie Ellen Matlock (b. Sept. 4, 1874 Marlin, Falls County, Texas) on Jan. 14, 1889 at Cureo, Dewitt County, Texas. They had six children: Leona Josephine (f) b. Mar. 20, 1890 at Cuero, Dewitt County Bonnie Monroe (m) b. Jan. 15, 1892 at Edna, Jackson County Jessie Winnie (f) b. Sept. 26, 1893 at Edna, Jackson County Maude Belle (f) b. Jun. 26, 1895 at Edna, Jackson County Lillie Mae (f) b. Mar. 5, 1898 at Edna, Jackson County Charles Henry Claude (m) b. Jan. 9, 1902 at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado The found censuses of him are: The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists: William Henry Whadford, w, m, born-Sept, year-1865 age last birthday is 30 or 39 and he is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The census date is June 4th, 1900. The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 47 (birthyear? 1863?) and as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The census date is April 18th, 1910. The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 56 (birthyear? 1864) and both his parents were born in North Carolina. The census date is Jan. 24th, 1920. The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Wadford, m, w, age 66 (birthyear? 1864) and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. The census date is April 10th, 1930. Recently, I finally found a census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather would have been and I'm hoping someone may be able to provide the crack in my brick wall. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name and I'm hoping it is recognized. The listings is: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (possibly Annie or (N)Annie), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. I'm assuming Ms. Wadford is a sister to either James D. or Mollie, but I have found no proof. If you have any information regarding the Wad-Watfords, Havens-ins, Hubbards or recognize this story, please let me know. I would also appreciate any ideas or other contacts. Thank you! Nancy L. Compton
