    1. [ALElmore] Re: Wetumpka Prison
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/VS.2ADI/614.2.2.1 Message Board Post: Taken from the History of Wetumpka Sesquicentennial "During the year 1839 Wetumpka had been chosen as the site for the State Penetentiary....The first warden was William Hogan. The first convict was William Garrett, who was charged with harboring a run-away Negro.... " It goes on to say that he escaped and was recaptured but later pardoned as some doubt to his guilt had arisen. No other name is given in the book though locals may have assigned it one. I am from Tennessee so I would not know that.. The book refers to it as the STATE PENETENTIARY. It was, when I saw it several years ago, little more than a pile of bricks. Hope this helps someone. It was called Kilby. There is another prison called Tutwiler which is a woman's prison on the eastern side of Wetumpka. It is not very old. In 1866 Elmore Co was formed from parts of Coosa, Autauga, Montgomery, and Tallapoosa counties. Wetumpka where the present "Tutwiler exists, before 1866 was in part of the in Coosa, and part in Montgomery. I suspect a tip of it was in Autauga. I well remember passing by old Kilby; the last time I saw it, only a pile of bricks remained. Anne G.

Both my g. grandfather and gg. grandfather worked there as guards. I have some history of the prison. It was built in 1832 ..thats from memory but around then. That part of Coosa became Elmore County sometime shortly after the civil war.. not sure of the dates.

I'm not 100% certain how long the city of Montgomery had two newspapers running, but with Wetumpka's proximity it's likely that any published obituary would have run in the Montgomery Advertiser and the Alabama Journal. The Journal ceased publishing some years ago, but it did run an obit for my grandfather in 1974. I don't know for certain if it was in business in 1958. I'm also not aware of any online source of obituaries for either paper. You can find obituaries at montgomeryadvertiser.com only back to March of 2001. I had to find my grandfather's in the local public library by searching microfilm. Perhaps someone can look there for you. I'm not sure if I'll get an opportunity to visit soon, but if I do I'll be sure and let you know. = Steve = -- Steve W. 2. Caroline
    3. The Bledsoe Cemetery was once located on the property that became the William Lowndes Yancy property, across from Gunter AFB. As documented in "Cemeteries of Montgomery County, AL, Book I, Dec. 1974", the following were interred there: TIMOTHY BLEDSOE (1817 - 1839); WILLIAM B. BREEDLOVE (1806 - 1829); AND L DeV PORCHER (1853 - 1906). I will appreciate any information about this cemetery and if the graves are known to have been moved elsewhere. They are no longer evident on the property. Caroline Horton, Prattville, AL carolineh@knology.net

I have done a lot of notetaking and contemplating in the cemetery. I was told by my grandmother (1899-1997) that a COLLIER was keeping church records but they were lost or destroyed, possibly by a dog or rats???, at least the OLD records. COOSA COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS also copied Carolina cemetery inscriptions before Linda Blankenship. A HISTORY OF COOSA COUNTY mentions the church and its forefathers. I have a couple of elderly cousins who MIGHT have some knowledge of your family members in unmarked graves. Would pass along their names and phone numbers but not on this message board, for their privacy. Where are you located? What specific families are you researching? I have been looking into: FULMER, MOORE, GILLILAND, FERGUSON, and others pop up from time to time... I know he was either married to or had a child with Martha Ann Bell (who later became a Davis by marriage, and still later a Smith . . . she obviously ws married several times). Lance and Martha's daughter was Celia Ann Davis (born in 1883). Apparently, she took the surname of Martha's second husband, but she was Lance's daughter. Celia married William Harvey Swearingen and had four children: Orville, Ora, Dessie, and Albert Harold. Dessie married a John Thomas Cindle. They are my great-grandparents. The reason I am trying to trsce my family to Lance Woodfin is he is supposed to have been full blood Cherokee. I am trying to prove my Indian ancestry. I think he may have died at a young age (or maybe was never married to Martha) because of the number of times she was married. Anyway . . . sorry so long. . . you probably can't help but thanks for the reply! -Angela P.S. Sorry I do not know any locations . . . possibly Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma.
