He owned this store for several years also. John was also a nursery salesman for Stark Nursery. Garland (nickname-Jose) who was born in Matamoros, Mexico in 1849-1850. His father was Judge Rice Garland formerly of Virginia and New Orleans. Joseph moved to Galveston, Texas after Rice's death and worked as a clerk in the Customs House at Galveston in 1870-1872. He met his wife (Cecilia Cook) there and they were married in 1871. Two sons were born, Rice in 1873 and Roswell in 1875. Both boys were told that their father was robbed and killed while returning to Galveston, Texas from a cattle drive to Abilene, Kansas. Cecilia and the boys were back in Long Island for the 1880 Census so the time frame is April 1874 to April 1880.
