    1. Edgefield Co, SC John and Anna/Nancy Arledge
    2. Pam Wilson
    3. Dear friends, I've recently obtained all the ARLEDGE documents and records from the Edgefield Co, SC Archives, and have abstracted them here for you (below). They are very interesting, and should really enrich the histories of those of you who are descended from John and Anna Arledge of Edgefield District, SC, whose children went down into Monroe and Wilcox Co's in AL and from there went south and west into MS, LA and TX. One puzzling item I need help with. Does anyone know if "ANNA/ANN" and "NANCY" were used interchangeably in the late 1700s/early 1800s? These documents name John's wife sometimes as ANNA, sometimes as ANN, and sometimes as NANCY (which really confused me). It's clear that they are not two separate wives from reading the documents. For a number of reasons, I suspect that she was a DUKE/DUKES by birth; some DUKE researchers have suggested that she may have been a daughter of John and Ann DUKES and sister of Moses DUKE. I believe that the following were children of John and Anna/Nancy Arledge: Patience Arledge m. CHANDLER? Isaac Duke Arledge m. Rachel HARRINGTON Elizabeth Arledge? Esther Arledge m. WEEKS John "Jack" Arledge m. (1) MARTIN? (2) Drady OWENS Burrell Arledge (never married; mentally impaired) Well, here are the documents from my files: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ John and Anna Arledge lived on Turkey Creek, a secondary tributary of the Savannah River in Edgefield Co, SC as early as 1787. _____________ LAND RECORDS EDGEFIELD CO, SC: John AKRIDGE purchased from William MOSLEY 60 acres of land 12 April 1786 (Deed Book 1 p. 183, Edgefield Co, SC). Is this the same person, or a different one? The name is consistently spelled AKRIDGE throughout. listed in Edgefield District SC in 1787 as John ARLIDGE (there is also a listing for a John ACREDGE]. (Colonial America, 1607-1789 SC Census Index). 200 acres. Edgefield Co SC Deed Book 2, p. 94-97. 1 Jan 1788/2 Jan 1788. Lease/Release. Received a State Grant in 1791 for 155 acres on Turkey Creek in Edgefield County, Ninety-Six District, SC, which augmented several other land holdings he had previously acquired. [Edgefield Deed Book 7, p. 252] State of SC 21 March 1792 Lease and Release from Jacob Youngblood of Edgefield County, Planter, to John ALDRIDGE of Edgefield County, Planter; for 5 shillings sterling paid by said Aldridge hath bargained and sold a certain plantation or tract of land containing by elimination 185 acres on the South side of Turkey Creek the waters of Stephens Creek and Sewana Rivers in Edgefield County, part of a tract of land containing 370 acres granted to Jacob Youngblood 5 June 1786. Survey description follows. "To have and to hold the said plantation or tract of 185 acres of land and all or singular the premises herein before mentined and intended to be bargained and sold and every part and parcel thereof with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said John Aldridge his heirs and assigns from the day next before the day of the date of these presents for and during and unto the full end and term of one whole year, from thence next ensuing and fully to be completed and ended yielding and paying Therefore, unto the said Jacob Youngblood, his heirs and assigns, the rent of one peppercorn on the last day of said term if the same shall be lawfully demanded to the interest and purposes that the said John Aldridge by virtue of these presents, and by force of the statute for transferring uses into possession, may be in actual possession of the premises before mentioned and intended to be hereby bargained and sold in every part and parcel thereof, with their and every of their appurtenances, and may be hereby enabled to accept and take a Grant and Release of the Reversion and the Inheritance of the same to him and his heirs and assigns for ever. JACOB YOUNGBLOOD (seal) wit: Isaac {his I mark} Aldridge Patience {her P mark} Aldridge State of SC This Indenture made the 22 March 1792 between Jacob Youngblood and John Aldridge (both planters of Edgefield County), that Youngblood, for and in consideration of 15 pounds sterling paid by Aldridge, hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened, released and Confirmed unto the said Aldridge ("in his actual possession now being by virtue of a Bargain and Sale to him thereof made for one whole year by an Indenture of Lease bearing date the day next before the day of the date of these presents and by force of the statute for transferring uses into actual possession") a tract of land containing 185 acres situated on Turkey Creek the waters of Stephens Creek of Savana River... JACOB YOUNGBLOOD (seal) wit: Isaac {his I mark} Aldridge Patience {her P mark} Aldridge Jas. Scott Recorded and witnesses sworn 19 Sept 1792 14 June 1792. Edgefield Co, SC Deed Book 7, P. 80-85, Lease/Release. Indenture between John and Ann ARLEDGE of Turkey Creek in Edgefield County, Ninety Six District, to David Baker Chandler, minor son of Joel Chandler, planter of the Creek County and state aforesaid: 519 acres on Turkey Creek, for 10 shillings Sterling, 364 acres of which are part of tract granted to Richard Johnston in 1786 and conveyed to Arledge on 6-7 August 1788 (Book B, p. 25 or 35); another 155 acre grant to John Arledge 3 October 1791 by Gov. Charles Pinckney of SC recorded in Secy's Office in grant book No. 5 p. 557. Signed John Arledge, Ann Arledge (their I marks), witnessed by Joel Chandler, Jas. Scott and Patience Arledge (her p mark). There seem to be terms of a lease to Chandler for one peppercorn rent. Sworn and recorded 20 Jun 1792, dower relinquished Nov term 1792. NOTE: For a number of reasons, I suspect that the above transaction may be a pre-marital transaction conveying land to Chandler who was planning to marry Patience Arledge. The selling price--10 shillings for 519 acres--seems extraordinarily low, really a token. [In another deed a few years earlier, in 1788, there is a sale of 60 acres for 100 pounds sterling, in contrast, to establish a relative sense of real estate values). Also, the minor status of Chandler and the fact that his father is involved in this agreement would indicate that this is some transfer of marital dowry. 2. The Pauling/Aldridge Family
    3. I would like to contact Gerald Millard Aldridge, who was born 05 July 1920 in Dawson New Mexico. I believe he was a fisherman, and that his boat was docked in Avalon, Calif. He was briefly married to my mother-in-law, Agnes Louise Dahl (known as Louise). Their marriage certificate is from Clark Co. Nevada (probably Las Vegas), and they were married on 09 Aug 1950. I believe they were divorced when my husband (Rob Aldridge) was about two years old, which would have been in 1954. Gerald is listed on my husband's birth certificate as the father, but Louise told Rob that Gerald was not in fact his birth father. We would like to contact Gerald to see if he might know who Rob's birth father was, or if he has any information that might help us with this mystery. Unfortunately, Louise died without divulging much that would help. My husband was born 26 Mar 1952 at Washington Hospital in Culver City, Calif. The address shown for Gerald and Louise on the birth certificate is 191! 07 Kittredge Street, in Reseda, Calif. I realize that if we contact Gerald, it might bring back unpleasant memories for him. However, we would very much like to get some health information from Rob's father's family, and I am worried that if we don't track them down soon, everyone who might know anything to help will have died. If anyone can help me with specific information, please email me directly at thegriswolds@earthlink.net. Thanks in advance! Cheryl Pauling

A few years ago, I spent a good deal of time on several Aldridge/Eldrige families in southern MD, including Prince Georges, Calvert, Anne Arundel and St. Mary's County. I was looking for a link to the "Allreds" of NC, and not really trying to pin down the lines there in detail. I will say there are some interesting connections. One suggests a link between a William Eldridge who died in Anne Arundel County, MD c. 1667 and families who lived in Cherry Point Neck in Northumberland, County, VA. The will of WILLIAM ELDRIDGE, dated 11 Mar 1665 was proved in Anne Arundel County, MD 2 Jun 1667. He is probably the WILLIAM OLDRIDGE who transported himself, his wife Elizabeth, and one daughter Anne to Maryland in 1662. In his will, WILLIAM ELDRIDGE left his entire estate to Samuel Lane (named administrator) and to William Sewick/Swick. It turns out that Samuel Lane, b.1628, became a Puritan minister in England and served as vicar of Long Houghton in Northumberland England until he was ejected in 1662 when the Puritans were thrown out of power. While Lane was in Long Houghton, he married Barbara Roddam (Rhodam etc.) who was born in 1622. There is very good evidence to suggest that Barbara was the sister of Matthew Roddam or Rhodam who settled in the 1630s on Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay which lies between Anne Arundel County, MD and the eastern shore of MD. Later, Matthew Roddam and a number of other Marylanders moved to the south shore of the Potomac River and settled on Cherry Point Neck, now in Northumberland County, VA. Matthew Roddam had two daughters, Elizabeth and Hanna, but no sons. Elizabeth married Richard Kenner and Hanna married Christopher Neale. Roddam's property was adjacent to the property that belonged to Cloud Tullos and the records indicate the families were quite close. Those who have studied the records of Northumberland County will recall that a WILLIAM ALDRIDGE died there c. 1662 as the result of an accidental gun shot wound, and there were a number of depositions concerning his death. In one, Daniel Neale and Eleanor his wife testified that after the accident, this WILLIAM ALDRIDGE was brought to their house where he died. Christopher Neale who married Hanna Roddam was the son of this Daniel Neale and his wife Eleanor. Whether this WILLIAM ALDRIDGE was brought to the Daniel Neale home as a matter of coincidence, or whether there was some connection I could not prove. There are other records that connect Roddam to CLEMENT ARLEDGE, e.g. there is a deed made by CLEMENT ARLEDGE and his wife Mary to Patrick Maly. Witnesses to this deed were Christopher and Rodham Neale. Rodham Neale was a son of Capt. Christopher and Hanna (Roddam) Neale. Let me return to William Sewick who was also a devisee in the will of WILLIAM OLDRIDGE/ELDRIDGE of Anne Arundel. Sewick was a grantor in a deed made in Anne Arundel on 3 May 1682 and recorded in Jun 1682. Interestingly, witnesses to this deed included NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE. That both WILLIAM OLDRIDGE/ELDRIDGE and NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE were both connected with William Sewick suggest the possibility of a connection between the two, possibly father and son though this is not proved. Incidentally, in some of the MD records, Nicholas Aldridge is seen as NICHOLAS OLDRIDGE. Here are some of the main points of my research on the southern MD Aldridges (all information from parish registers, deeds, wills, and other probate records). Nicholas Aldridge married Martha Besson. Their children included 1. Thomas b.1680 who m. Elizabeth Purdy d/o John and Mary, 2. Nicholas b. 1698 who m. Ursula, 3. Ann b. 1684, 4. John b. 1688 (may have married Susannah), 5. Joane b. 1689, 6. Sidney b. 1693, 7. Jane b. 1696, 8. William I b. 1700, d. 1702, 9. William II b. 1702, and 10. James b. 1706 Children of Thomas Aldridge and Elizabeth Purdy include: 1. Edmond (b.1703, d.1703), 2. Rebecka b. 1705, 3. Thomas b. 1709 (he may be the Thomas who married Mary and had Mary b. 21 Dec 1728 and William b. 23 Nov 1730), 4. Martha bap. 1717, d. 1719, 5. Elizabeth bap. 1723, and 6. John b. 28 Mar 1712. Children of Nicholas b. 1698 d.c. 1758 include: 1. Zachariah, 2. Nicholas, 3. William b. 1734, 4. Ann, 5. Sarah, 6. Mary, 7. Susannah, and 8. John d.c. 1750 Prince Georges County who married Eleanor who d.c. 1760 Prince Georges County. Issue of John and Eleanor include: 1. John, 2. Jacob b.c. 1741, 3. Thomas, and 4. Susanna Prather. In addition to the Nicholas Aldridge family, there was also a THOMAS1 ALDRIDGE who died 1718 in Anne Arundel. It is possible, but not proved, that this may be the Thomas Aldridge who received 100 acres in Cecil County in 1674 called "Aldridge's Lott." The name of the wife of Thomas1 Aldridge is unknown. However, he married secondly Rebecca Hancock, widow of Stephen Hancock. Rebecca was likely the daughter of William Crouch who left Rebecca, inter alia, a tract called "Crouch's Mill Dam." The Rent Rolls of Anne Arundel show that one THOMAS ALBRIX [sic] paid rent on this Mill Dam in 1707 as the possessor. By his first wife, Thomas Aldridge had 1. Sarah who married Henry Merriday 29 Oct 1711 and 2. Thomas2 Aldridge. In his will, Thomas1 left 100 acres called "Murphy's Choice" to his son Thomas2. Thomas2 Aldridge married Mary Foreman who received 125 acres of a tract called "Bare Neck" in the will of her father, William Foreman. Thomas2 Aldridge was living Sep 1727 when William Foreman made his will. However, Thomas2 was deceased by 28 Feb 1732 when his widow and relict married George Gill. Children of Thomas2 Aldridge and Mary Foreman include: WILLIAM ALDRIDGE b.1713/14, 2. THOMAS3 ALDRIDGE b. 1716, 3. JOSEPH ALDRIDGE b. 1718, and SOLOMON ALDRIDGE b. 1725. This Thomas2 Aldridge family was of considerable interest to me because the names William, Thomas, Joseph and Solomon also appear in the NC records of Orange and Rowan County. These four seem to disappear from the Maryland records, but whether they went to NC is not known. At the risk of rambling, I might add that the name MAJOR LEA appears in the early Orange County, NC records in connection with the Allred line. For example, there is a deed for 296 acres in Orange on both sides of Bush Creek of Deep River surveyed 29 Jul 1762. Chain carriers were MAJOR LEA, WILLIAM ALDRED SR. The Plat reads surveyed for WILLIAM ALRED JR. It turns out that MAJOR LEA married Elizabeth Slade who was the daughter of Thomas Slade and his second wife Hanna Miles. Interestingly, Thomas Slade's first wife was ANN BESSON the daughter of Nicholas Besson of Anne Arundel and his wife Diana Haile. Moreover, Nicholas Besson (b.1677) was the son of Thomas Besson (b.1638, m. Margaret Saughier b.1646) whose sister Martha Besson married NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE. A further interesting connection is as follows. Anne Besson, sister to Martha who married NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE, married Col. Nicholas Gassaway of Anne Arundel. Their son was John Gassaway who married Elizabeth Lawrence and their son was Nicholas Gassaway (c.1696-1757), the father of Mary Gassaway who married JAMES ALDRIDGE son of NICHOLAS ALDRIDGE and Martha Besson. One book, "Aldredge 1655-1990 335 Years," by Gordon Parker and Helen Lane claims that JAMES ALDRIDGE and MARY (GASSAWAY) ALDRIDGE had a son, James Aldridge (b.1745) who married Rosanna Kendrick, and that their son ABNER ALDRIDGE (b. 1769 in Rowan County, NC) married Rebecca House. In conclusion, I believe there is much more to be learned by studying the Aldridges of southern Maryland. Perhaps someone will decide to pursue them further. 1. ARLEDGE, ALDRIDGE, THOMPSON, JONES of NC
    2. Pam Wilson
    3. Dear EFSS and Arledge/Aldridge colleagues, I need your help with one (of the many!) loose ends in the ARLEDGE (also know as ALDRIDGE in many cases) family history efforts. It also involves many THOMPSONS, JONES, and others (see below). (If any of you know Thompson and Jones researchers, please feel free to forward this to them). Most of the Northumberland Co, VA ARLEDGEs worked their way to the Craven/Fairfield area of SC, settling along the Wateree/Catawba, from whence their children began to spread into neighboring counties (esp. Kershaw, Chester and Edgefield in SC and Anson, Mecklenburg and Rutherford in NC). However, one important group of Arledges ended up in Randolph Co, NC, and we have a knowledge gap about exactly how they got there. One of the mysteries of the ARLEDGE family history is the need to discover what happened to Clement ARLEDGE, son of William ARLEDGE and Alice FANNIN of Northumberland Co, VA. Clement was born about 1708, presumably in Northumberland County. By most accounts, he married a woman named Ann or Anna (last name unknown). He sold his land in Northumberland Co. VA on 9 May 1743 and is presumed to have left the area. It appears that Clement went south into NC, and seems to have settled along Buffalo Creek in what was first Granville, then Bute and then probably Warren County. [See abstracts below]. (Does anyone know where this was and what county it was in after this?) He was closely associated with the THOMPSON and JONES families, and I'm hoping that researchers of those families might help fill in some of the blanks. I have found no mention of Clement Arledge after the 1772 deed, below. I have not been able to locate a will or estate records for either him or his wife, and have no record of who his children were. Now, I do have strong speculations as to who his children might have been, but as you and I both know, speculations won't even buy us a cup of coffee! There are records in Randolph County of a Henry, an Isaac, a Hicks, and a Thomas ARLEDGE who are likely the sons or grandsons of this Clement Arledge: -In 1793, a Henry was the first ARLEDGE on the grantee list of land records in Randolph Co, NC. (Book 5, p. 77, deed from Jeremia Cox for 300 acres). -According to Graham Louer's notes, there are records in Orange Co, NC of an Isaac ELLIDGE and ELLEDGE that may be the same person as Isaac ARLEDGE later of Randolph County. One, dated 20 Oct 1760, is a warrant for 700 acres on a branch of Rocky River adjoining Ambros SMITH, "where Elledge lives." On the same date there is an entry by Shedrick JACOBS for 700 acres on branch of Rocky River adjoining Ambros SMITH, plantation where he now lives. Isaac also entered 700 acres for S. JACOBS, who also now lives at Ambros SMITH on the same date. -According to Nancy Martin, Hicks ARLIGE is listed as a signer of 1773 petition to move the courthouse nearer the center of the county. Randolph Co. was part of Guilford Co. at this time. According to the writer most of the signers are residents of southern Guilford which became part of Randolph Co. in 1779. -A Thomas ARLEGE is on the 1779 tax list in Randolph Co, NC. We have thousands of descendants of the Randolph County, NC Isaac ARLEDGE, above (who died bef. August 1818 in Randolph Co, NC), who would love to know for sure that they are descended through Clement. [Isaac's offspring spread into south central Ohio, Iowa and east/middle Tennessee, with many going on to TX.] Here are the only records I have been able to find for Clement ARLEDGE: Franklin R. Aldridge (Aldridge Records, Vol. II, 1975, p. 189) wrote: "In the year 1761, Earl Granville granted to Thomas TURNER (Deed Bk E, p. 175, Granville Co, NC) vacant land on NC Fishing Creek adjoining CAPPS, ALDRIDGE, THOMAS along Peter SANTSING's line and Francis SANTSING's line adjoining JONES and SMART lines. This appears that one of the ALDRIDGEs was already living there. "In Granville County in the year 1762 Francis CAPPS deeded to Clement ARLEDGE of same county in the consideration of the sum of Eighteen pounds gold and silver coin for 300 acres of land being a survey taken by James Sentry, lying on the head of Bufelow Creek (Deed Bk. F P. 152 Granville Co, NC)." After the change in jurisdiction to Bute County, the same people are found in the following records. The name THOMPSON name has recently come to my attention in relation to the family of Clement's younger half-brother Isaac ARLEDGE, who settled on the Wateree River in Craven County (Fairfield District), SC in the 1740s. Two of Isaac's sons were Clement and Caleb, who appear in the following deed references involving THOMPSONs in Anson Co, NC and Chester and Fairfield Co, SC. Zachariah ARLEDGE THOMPSON of Chester CO, SC was the seller in an 1808 deed to Caleb ARLEDGE of Mecklenburg Co NC for 50 acres in Anson Co, NC originally granted to Joseph THOMPSON in 1786. This deed was witnessed by Clement ARLEDGE Jr. and Sr. We also have a deed from John and Ann THOMSON to Caleb ALEDGE [sic] in June 1786 for 150 acres on Richardson Creek in Mecklenburg Co. NC. If anyone has any clues about any of these families or where I might find more answers, please let me know. Thanks!
