    3. Hi Again, I have never researched, myself, the Swansea area, for any accounts or records for any Aldrich's. I lost all my "IN" box messages last night so I do not have the excerpt that Jim Bullock , sent to the list.. If I recall correctly it was that George Aldrich was among 65 "first signers" recorded at a town meeting held 22 Feb. 1669/70, an agreement concerning this township's present & future. If not?? Then this record does exist! and he received 2 acres of land, at that time: All info I have about Swansea concerning a GEORGE is in the Harl Aldrich Genealogy.. From pg. 4 of the original Swansea Proprietors records: Nov. 18, 1670: "It is Agreed upon by the Town that a Plot of Ground lying and Being by the Hundred Acres Bounded on ye South West by the Meadow on the North by the Run of Water that is by the house of Georg Aldrig on the South East by a Pine Swamp with a little Neck of land to the East: Shall be for a Burying Ground place:" The burying place described in the 1670 action is believed to be the present NOCKUM HILL Cemetery located in Barrington, R.I. just south of Warren Av. in Swansea,Ma. ( Barrington & Warren R.I. and Somerset, Ma. were originally parts of Swansea: Annals Of Mendon, Ma. by J.G Metcalf: .May 19, 1669: ____________Aldrich, & George Alldrich and others sign a petition to the General Court: as an inhabitant of Mendon: (concerning the town boundrys and meadows: Dec 1, 1669: Concernig the Minister, Joseph Emerson: John Alderidge (sic) Peter Alderidge, Joseph Alderidge and others sign: (Seems strange that George disappears shortly after the settledMinister Emerson comes to Mendon???) May 7, 1670: There is only one recording in the Annals for 1670: Another petition to the General Court concerning grumbling about Taxes: Joseph Aldrich, is the only Aldrich that signed this petition.: June 14,1671: Divisions of Plains: The Mill Plains south of Benjamin Albee's land, and the Pine plain: no. 14: George Alderidge, no.22: Joseph Alderidge: July 22, 1672: Every 30 acre houselot should have five acres of Swamp; Division of Swamps (Mendon)i We find the no. of Proprietors at that time 34; Joseph Aldrich, is the onlly Aldrich mentioned in this division of land (swamp) I do not see any Aldrich mentioned again in the Annals till a passage by Metcalf, stating::" At the break of King Philips War the following persons were presumed to be heads of families: (date would be 14 July 1675:) viz:- John Aldridge, Joseph Aldridge, George Aldrich, and others: making 38 in all:" Jan, 3, 1680: "The names of those returned after the War: viz:- Peter Aldrich, Joseph Aldrich, George Aldrich, and others making 20 in all: Others returned afterwards:" If my history serves me right?? Swansea Ma. was the first town in Ma. to be attack by King Philip's Warriors. June 1675: Mendon was the first town to have any fatalities July 14, 1675: George is placed in Swansea in 1670- and we have to believe the record correct that he had a house in Swansea by Nov. 1670: Let's assume it was on the 2 acres. given to him as a "first signer" at that time: We know in Mendon he had at least 40 acres and more allotted in future divisions: We see from the Annals, if he resided in Swansea , it was between 1670 and 1675: According to the Annals of Mendon.. when the swamps lands were divided, where was George?? Did he remove to Swansea and returned to Mendon only after the KP War in 1680 , after his house was probably destroyed during K,P, War, in Swansea?? and thereafter never returned to Swansea?? As you note. Metcalf in the Annals of Mendon. PRESUMES, George Aldrich was a head of Household in 1675, in Mendon.. Was he?? There are many unanswered questions in many early histories of these pioneer settlers. When George returned to Mendon , did he go reside with his son in Uxbridge, Ma. and die in Uxbridge??? These are answers we'll probably never find.. but It's fun debating about all he probabilities, isn't it??? Anyone have anything to add, or have any other ideas?? Happy Hunting, Alice PS. I received a few private messages about George probably not having the same views as Willett , (Swansea's KEY man, so to speak) :) But I believe I have read that George was one of the few slave-holders in Mendon. And in the History Of Woonsocket. R.I. by E. Richardson there is a PRINCE ALDRICH mentioned, as being a black-man.. Do you think he was a descendant of one of George's slave??? Just a little something else to think about! Does anyone have the Histroy of Swansea??? Was Willett a slave -holder or an abolitionist???
