SUE'S COOK BOOK Recipe #3 STATE CENSUS SCHEDULES The following records can be used to supplement the Federal Census or to substitute for it in times and places where it doesn't exist. All of the records suggested below are available in printed form (except as noted) and most will be found in the state archives. Many state archives will answer specific questions by mail for a fee. To find the address of the State Archives, consult the Handy Book for Genealogists by Everton Publishers. Many are available in regular genealogy libraries, as well. In addition to the records suggested below, there are also Federal Mortality Schedules that can be consulted. These are available on microfilm. If you can't find your ancestor on the US Census where you think he should be, try an alternative source. The type of information you will find will vary. Alabama State/Territorial Censuses taken in 1820 (partial), 1819 (Northern Alabama Residents), 1855 (incomplete), 1866 (incomplete), 1907 (Confederate Veterans). Alaska State/Territorial Censuses taken in 1904, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1914, 1917 (but incomplete), Unalaska and Aleutian Villages 1878, Sitka 1878, 1881, Cape Smyth and Point Barrow 1885, Pribiloff Islands 1890 thur 1895. There are also voter registration registers for various years. Arizona State/Territorial Censuses were taken in 1850, 1860, 1864, 1866, 1882, and a few other years, but not all are complete. There are also voter registration registers. Arkansas None that I know of. California State Census of 1852--the California State Library has a copy and it is indexed. The Padron Censas of 1790--this is a Mission census. Colorado State/Territorial Census of 1885. Connecticut Census reconstruction 1660-1673. Delaware Tax Lists 1790, Residents 1675, 1677, 1693, Militia Rolls 1803-1807. District of Columbia Union Veterans and Widows 1890, State/Territorial Census 1867. Florida State/Territorial Census 1825, 1845, 1855, 1866, 1867, 1875, 1885, 1895--but they are not complete. Complete in 1935 and 1945. Georgia Early Settlers 1733-1742, Land Lottery 1805, 1820, 1821, 1827, 1832. Census for a few counties 1800, 1827, 1838, 1845, 1852, 1859. Hawaii 1878 Island Census (Oahu, Maui, Hawaii only), 1890 (all islands). Idaho None that I know of. Illinois State/Territorial Censuses in 1810, 1818, 1820, 1825, 1830, 1835, 1840, 1845, 1855, 1865. Indiana State Cenus every 4 years from 1820 through 1853, and every six thereafter at least 1877. Voters list 1809. Revolutionary War Pensioners 1835. Iowa State/Territorial Censuses for 1836, 1840-1849, 1852, 1854, 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925. Sac and Fox Indian Census. 1847. Kansas State/Territorial Census 1855, 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859, 1865, and every ten years thereafter until 1925. Available at Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka.
