Hi Cookies! With this recipe comes a request for recipes in return! Why don't some of you post a list of libraries in your area? It would be a big help to others who live nearby or plan to visit. SUE'S COOK BOOK, RECIPE #6 GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH LIBRARIES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA I suggest that you call to find out days and times they are open, since this tends to change from time to time. Los Angeles Temple LDS Family History Center 10741 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025 310-474-2202 Located in the basement of the Visitor's Center. Has a large collection of vital records and census records on microfilm. Also many books and computer access to the IGI, Ancestor File, etc. Current hours for this library are: Mon., Fri., Sat., 9 AM to 5 PM; Tues., Wed., Thurs., 9 AM to 9 PM. Closed Sunday. There is ample free parking. Copying is available from microfilm, books, and computer for a fee. Some supplies can be purchased here. There are no restaurants in walking distance so, if you don't want to drive to lunch or dinner, you better bring some food. Huntington Beach Central Library 7111 Talbert Ave. Huntington Beach, CA 92648 714-842-4481 A very good collection of books and periodicals is maintained here by the Orange County Genealogical Society. There is ample free parking, copying machines, snack machines, and microfilm readers. Located in basement of library. Current days and hours are: Monday, 1 to 9 PM, Tues.-Thurs., 9 AM to 9 PM, Fri. and Sat., 9 AM to 5 PM. Closed Sunday. Snack machines and coffee bar in library. Long Beach Public Library--Main Branch 101 Pacific Ave. Long Beach, CA 90822 562-437-2949 Use parking structure on Broadway (expensive) or metered parking on street. They are open on Sundays from 12-5 and you can park on the street for free on Sunday. Genealogy collection is maintained here by the Questing Heirs Genealogy Society. A small collection, but worthwhile. It has a few things I have not found anywhere else in the area. Photocopiers available. Coffee shop across the street. Los Angeles Central Library 630 W. 5th Street Los Angeles, CA 90017 213-626-7461 Parking structure on Flower St., validation at information desk in library. (This gets you a lower "library rate.") This library has the largest genealogy collection in Southern California and one of the largest town and county history collections in the West. It is also well known for it's city directory collection. It is well worth several visits. I would recommend going on Saturday or Sunday when traffic is light and parking is cheaper. Or you can catch the Blue Line during the week and get off about 2 blocks from the library. If you go on the weekend, be aware that most restaurants are closed (except Carls Jr. which is open until 2 PM on weekends). Photocopiers are available. National Archives Pacific Southwest Regional Center 24000 Avila Rd. Laguna Niguel, CA 92656-3497 714-643-4241 Has all of the US Census through 1920, all Military Records prior to WWII, and other Federal Records on Microfilm. Census indeces in books and on CD-ROM. Open Monday-Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM and the lst Saturday of the month. Ample free parking. Microfilm copiers available. Cafeteria available. Picture ID required for entrance.
