    1. [ALDRICH-L] Dorchester Births?
    2. David G White
    3. Hi everyone, In a continuing effort to weed out any undocumented data from my sketch of George-1 and Katherine (__?__) Aldrich and their family, may I ask if anyone has ever seen a citation to the birth records for their children, Joseph, Mary, and Miriam? (I won't bother to ask about Abel--I have yet to see any evidence that Abel ever existed!) Several genealogies give exact dates for the births of Joseph, Mary, and Miriam at Dorchester (in the time period 1635-1639), but I can't find their birth dates in any of the published records of Dorchester. Unless someone can come up with citations to a primary source(s), I think we have to face the possibility that one or more of these dates were "invented." The date for the birth of Joseph (4 June 1635) is particularly important in my opinion. If authentic, that is, if Joseph was born on that date in Dorchester, it would be the earliest record of his parents in America. Regards, Dave David G. White wenonah@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu

    3. Good Morning All: Thank you Clay for passing Jerry along to us. Jerry, yes, you are descended from George 1 as you have it, and to Mark is fine. Mark apparently eith had a first wife, unknown, or else a son by Mary Ramsdell. I know the person who submitted the data to A. James Aldrich, and I will pass her address to you privately, as she may not wish to be bombarded with information seekers. AJ #203 Vol 1 and Vol 5 states that Mark may have had an unknown first wife. There is certainly room for this to have occurred. Anyway according to the GAG Vol 5 pg 22, Mark 6 was b. 03 Apr 1769 in Shrewsbury, MA. {I do not find this in the Shrewsbury, MA vital records}the place may be Shutesbury, MA of which I do not have the vital records. Mark 6 Aldrich (AJ #457R)(GAG Vol 5 pg 45-6) married Lydia Terry in 1794 and moved to Colebrook, Coos Co., NH. He may have first lived at maidstone, VT as he was apprenticed to a Mr. Terry who moved to Maidstone. Lydia Terry was the dau. She b. 1774, Enfield, CT and d. 01 Sep 1854 in Eddington, Penobscott Co., ME. He and Lydia had 14 children! Alpheus 7 being the 5th child and b. 12 Mar 1801 (AJ #734I) (GAG Vol 5 pg 105). The line is carried on down to Bernard Thomas 10 Aldrich b in 1904 Pomfret, CT. 1. [ALDRICH-L] Sue Cook Book, Recipe #8, part 2
    2. Sue's Cook Book, Recipe #8, Federal Records, Part 2, Immigration Records... IMMIGRATION RECORDS SHIPS' PASSENGER LISTS Official records of ships' passengers did not start until 1820, so you will not find records in the National Archives for the Colonial Period. Most of the records are from 1820 to 1945. These records include: customs passenger lists, immigration passenger lists, ships' captains lists. Most of them are indexed. In order to use these records, you first have to know the port of entry and the approximate date of arrival. Once you have this information, you may be able to find your ancestor of a ships' passenger list and, thereby, determine his exact date of arrival in the United States. For the colonial period, there are reconstructed lists of passengers available in various places, but not many of these would be found in the National Archives. If you don't know the port of entry and the approximate date of arrival, you may be able to find this information in the Naturalization records, if your ancestor applied for citizenship in the United States. NATURALIZATION RECORDS There are several different types of records: Declarations of Intention, Naturalization Petitions, Naturalization Depositions, Records of Naturalization, and Oaths of Allegiance. Not all of these records are in the National Archives. Many are in the court records of the various states. To make use of these records, you will have to do a little research to see where the records for your particular time and place are held. Between 1777 and 1790, each state handled its own Naturalization laws. In 1790, the United States passed its first Naturalization law. It concerned only white people who could become citizens after two years of residence. In 1798, the time was raised to 14 years, but it was lowered again in 1902 to five years (which is still valid). After 1802, several other requirements were added (such as proof that the person was in the country legally). In 1906, a stricter law was added. An immigrant had to first declare his intention to become a citizen and then, after an interval, he filled out an application. These applications contain a goldmine of genealogical information. The applications were checked by the nearest Federal Court, the applicant was examined before a judge, and then invited to give an Oath of Allegiance. After this, a Certificate of Citizenship was granted. The procedure is similar to this day. After 1930, the records will often include a photograph of the applicant. The National Archives has all of the records after 1906, and some of the records prior to that. A good resource for locating these records is A Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives, published by the National Archives Trust Fund Board. It is available in most libraries that have a genealogy collection or it can be purchased from the National Archives. To order copies of Ships' Passenger Lists or Naturalization Records from the National Archives, you must use special forms. Write first and ask for the appropriate form. ADDRESS General Reference Branch (NNRG) National Archives and Records Administration 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington DC 20408 You can write to this same address to request a free packet of information on the records and forms available from the National Archives. I would recommend that you do this first. Happy Hunting! Sue Roe

They will only release records to veterans and members of their immediate family--LIMITED TO spouse, parent, grandparent, child, or sibling. If the veteran is still living, WRITTEN CONSENT is required, even for members of the immediate family. Both of these agencies require the request for records to be made on a special form. 1. [ALDRICH-L] Sue's Cook Book, Recipe #7, part 2
    2. 1. Census Records can be a Primary Source or a Secondary Source. If we had access to the 1990 US Census (we don't), we could use it as a Primary Source, because the information on a modern census MUST be collected from an adult head of the household. In other words, a person is giving information about them self and their own children. I think it's safe to assume that we all have first hand knowledge of our own birth date and those of our own children, so we could use the 1990 US Census as a Primary Source. Unfortunately, this is not true of the US Census records that we have access to--1790 through 1920. Years ago, the persons collecting the census data got it wherever they could. It might have been from an adult head of household. I'm sure that it sometimes was. But just as often the information was given by a child, a neighbor, or the hired hand. That's why we find so many discrepancies in census records--and it's why we cannot use the census as a Primary Source. Another contributing problem was illiteracy. The further back we go, the more we encounter this problem. The 1790 census, for example, was taken at a time when many people were illiterate. They couldn't even spell their own names so the census taker had to spell them phonetically--sometimes with interesting results! If you are looking for an ancestor on the census, you need to consider every conceivable spelling you can imagine! 2. Compiled data bases, such as World Family Tree or the LDS Ancestral File or a printed compendium of genealogy, are Secondary Sources that are useful only as clues, but cannot ever be used as proof of anything. This type of data base (I'm sure you can think of others), is generally not documented and, often, it isn't even possible to find out who submitted the material. And, what's more, some of the people who compile these data bases don't care whether they are accurate or not! A case in point: I found my ancestor, Joseph Hartshorn, on a CD data base a few years ago. He was hooked up to the wrong father and, therefore, the wrong ancestry. I wrote to the producer of the CD, explaining the situation and enclosing a well-documented correction. I asked if my correction could be included in a future compilation and I asked for the name of the person who submitted the wrong ancestry. My letter was never answered and no correction was ever produced. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people are still using this CD and thinking that Joseph Hartshorn's ancestry is correct. Another case: A current producer of CD data bases is modifying the data that people submit--quite arbitrarily. If a date is unknown to the submitter and, therefore, is left off, it is not okay with this producer of CD's. They estimate the date! They have no data on which to make an educated guess, they just assign an arbitrary date. It think you get the picture. I don't mean to be negative, I just want to urge you to use caution when you use a compiled data base. Get your clues and then look for primary sources to provide proof. Happy hunting! 1. [ALDRICH-L] Sue's Cook Book, Recipe #7, part 1
    2. SUE'S COOK BOOK RECIPE #7 PRIMARY VS SECONDARY SOURCES Part 1 Primary Sources Definition: A Primary Source is a record that was produced by an eye-witness to the event. Primary Sources are the kind of sources we should all be looking for to document the events in the lives of our ancestors. These are the ones that provide the best possible proofs of the events in their lives. Examples of Primary Sources: Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates; Church records of Baptisms and Burials; official court records; and other records where the person giving the information was actually present when the event occurred. I'm sure you can all think of other examples. With this kind of proof, we can't go wrong. Only if we can't find a Primary Source should we use a Secondary Source to document an event. Part 2 Secondary Sources Definition: A Secondary Source is one where the information is given by someone who was NOT an eye-witness to the event. Secondary sources are based on a variety of things, but not on first hand knowledge. Examples: newspaper articles, family tradition, town lore, hand copies of hand copies of hand copies of primarily sources (The more they are copied, the more errors occur!), documents produced by people who were not present when the event occurred, compiled genealogies that are not thoroughly documented with Primary Sources. I'm sure you can also think of other examples here too. Secondary Sources are useful as clues and to fill in gaps when primary sources do not exist. But always use them with caution. If you can't find a Primary Source, then you need to use several Secondary Sources that are in agreement with each other to document the event. There are two types of sources that need a little extra attention: census records and various types of compiled data bases. Cont. in part 2...

My Lidia Aldrich was born in >East Milton >, Ohio in 1873 and she was married in 1903 to Franklin Foster >VanOrmer. Lydia is not carried on in the genealogy. AJ says she was b. 15 Nov 1872 and d. Apr 1951. There are no sources (chapter, verse and page) for this material in this book. Don't depend on the census records as being correct. They are only a tool or guide if you prefer. The reason I say this, is that you nor I or anyone else knows who gave the census taker the information, about who was born where, etc. It may have been a farm hand, servant, one of the kids, wife, etc. If I were you I'd look at the 1870 census and see what that says. William Anson Aldrich was born in Mendon, MA 13 Apr 1827 VR pg 20. I think William Anson's parents , including he and his sister probably lived in Cumberland, RI when William was young. This could then be the reason why it is stated in the 1880 census he was b. RI. William Anson's mother was of Cumberland, RI when she married Anson Aldrich. I would look no further here for a different Lydia/Lidia. You listed the children and I went to the GAG and saw the same list, give or take a middle name or initial. 3. Good Morning Gerald: Think you have a problem in your lineage: George 1 Jacob 2 Seth 3 Jonathan 4 you have his death as 1740. He was selling his farm in 1760 in Uxbridge, then he went to Killingly, CT, and then to Guilford, VT. As per GAG Vol 1 pg 55-56. Abner 5 does not apprear as being born in Uxbridge, MA as I have the Uxbridge Vital Records and he doesn't appear.
