Hi Cookies, Here's the promised list of Dutch and Frisian names to supplement the English list I sent previously. Hope it helps! Sue DUTCH AND FRISIAN NAMES WITH ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS Dutch and Fresian are two completely different languages, so the given names will often be completely different, as will the surnames. If you can determine that your ancestor had a Frisian name, you have narrowed your search to the province of Friesland--or if you can determine that it is Dutch, you have probably eliminated the province of Friesland. Example: My Grandfather was from Friesland. His name was Jenneke; this translated to John. But if he had come from one of the other provinces of the Netherlands his name would have been Johannes or Jan and translated to John. Surname endings are often big clues. Examples: If a name ends with "ma", such as Douwma, or "stra", such as Leenstra, it is probably Frisian. If you aren't sure what part of the Netherlands your ancestors came from, I recommend that you do some study on Dutch and Frisian names. It may help you to narrow your search. Below you will find a list of Dutch/Frisian given names and their English translations. I have used two lists compiled by others and some additions from my own family research to come up with this list. I am not an expert on Dutch/Frisian names so there could be errors. The Dutch/Fresian translations include full names as well as nicknames. In some cases I have mixed the masculine and feminine forms. There are, of course, lots of Dutch/Frisian names that don't seem to have any English translation. SUE'S COOK BOOK, RECIPE #9, PART 1 SEARCHING OLD RECORDS-- READING OLD HANDWRITING AND LOOKING FOR NAMES Before doing research in old records, it is a good idea to become familiar with all the variants in letter formation. Many errors are made by people who are not familiar with the handwriting styles of the colonial and pioneer periods in our country. Since I can't give you samples of old handwriting via email, I would like to recommend that you get a book on the subject and study it. You'll be glad you did! There are some very common pitfalls that I can comment on--even without illustration. The letters "s" and "l" are often confused. Both the capital and lower case versions of these two letters look the same in the handwriting of some of our ancestors. Vowels are often hard to distinguish too. Example: If you take these two pitfalls together, it is easy to see why the names Samuel and Lemuel are often exchanged. When looking for a name, let's say, in the census, if you can't find it, try exchanging the vowel for every other vowel. One of my ancestral names is Chilson. I have found it as Chalson, Chelson, Chilsen, etc. Another of my ancestors was named Relief, nickname Leafa. The person who transcribed the records in Putney, VT, thought the "f" was and "s" and the "e" was a "c". Every time her name occurs in the published records of that town, it reads "Lacsa". In the colonial period you will find that a double "s" is written as though it were an "fs". Thus, the name Melissa may look like Melifsa and, therefore, be misinterpeted. I think you can see the problem without any more examples! Another possible pitfall in looking for our ancestors is not being familiar all the various nicknames that might have been used for a particular given name. One of my ancestors was named Mary Ebaline Russell. It wasn't until I learned that Polly was a nickname for Mary that I finally found her on the 1850 census in her father's household as Polly Russell. Another nickname for Mary is Molly and another one is Mae. If you have an ancestor listed somewhere as Molly, you need to look for her as Mary too. Or if you know your ancestor was Mary, be sure to check for the nicknames Molly, Polly and Mae. This principle applies to all names. Also, be sure to realize that some nicknames apply to more than one given name. In Parts 2 through 5 of this Recipe, I'm going to give you a list of given names and their various nicknames. Read on...

Especially on my mother's side of the family which is where the Shaw/Aldrich line is. I will have to search the prior messages now that I know what to look for. D. Hello My name is Mac McKinsey and I live in Gillette , Wyoming . I just recently subscribed to the Aldrich newsletter . I'm new at this and don't really know quite how things work , so , I guess I'll just throw something out and see what might happen . What little Aldrich research I've done is as follows : Thomas Aldrich - born May 1852 in Ohio married Jennie I. Collins (born june 1862 in Indiana ) on April 21 , 1880 in Tippecanoe Co. , Indiana . They had nine children , Edith Elizabeth born May 28 , 1881 Don born 1883 Harry T. born April 1884 Courtney born Dec. 1885 Orth Erie born March 1888 Lewis S. born Nov. 1889 Harold B. born Oct. 1892 Ruth V. born July 1895 Cozette born Dec. 1899 Orth Erie was my grandfather. He married Faye (Abell) Platt in 1919 in Guernsey , Wyoming . Orth's brother Harry was also living in Guernsey at the time and they ran a livery and dray buisness togther . Some time in the late 20's Orth disappeared and was never heard from again by the Abell family .In 1939 his sister Edith died in Boise , Idaho . In her obituary it stated that Orth was residing in Longview , Washington . I have not been able to locate him on any death index as yet . I am greatly interested in finding both ends of this family and would appreciate any information that might help me trace the family back and find where Orth resided at the time of his death. Dear Elizabeth, I have traced my wife's Aldrich line back to George Aldrich, who was born in Derbyshire, England about 1605. I used to collect information about all of George's ancestors until I learned that there were others doing the same thing and I decided that I did not want to duplicate their efforts. Therefore, I quit collecting information that was not directly related to my wife's direct line. I am sending a copy of my reply to the ALDRICH Mailing List, where many members of the National Aldrich Association gather to exchange information. I am sure that you will receive a message from one of your cousins explaining how to join the NAA and subscribe to the mailing list. Greetings Aldrich researchers. I was recently invited to join this list, was rather surprised as I only have one Aldrich in my tree and don't know how that fact was even known to W. David Samuelsen. Sorry I don't have more, this come from a group sheet my uncle sent my mother for Christmas a couple years ago. Requests for more information from him has only gotten responses that he's working on it..
