You have to remember one thing: The colonists in New England were cutting off the ties to non-Biblical names. George was one of non-Biblical names. If you look at records from 1620-1700 - you would be hard pressed to find even the name Charles.. more common is Hepzibeth - that is something we don't see used by today's generation often. Hosea, Deborah, John, Joseph, Ephraim, Joshua, Miriam, etc - those are Biblical names. The church leaders in those days were more zealous in following the Bible and ensuring the given names are Biblical. Not so in the southern states. W. David Samuelsen

    3. Hi Jim and All: This would have had to be George 1 Aldrich. It doesn't appear that he named any of his children Georg, nor does it appear that his children named any of their children George! This is very unusual. Therefore, this would be the only George who could have signed his name anywhere in that time period. 3. Hi Jim and all Cuz's, Good Question, Jim ??? I do believe George -1 Aldrich was supposedly in Swansea , Bristol, Ma. in 1670. The new town of Swansea was seperated from Rehobeth 1667. Did George ever live in Swansea.?? . From the Harl P.Aldrich Genealogy-1996; He says, "It appears he did" from pg. 4 of the original Proprietors records. I won't write the whole record- but it says "this is the house of George Aldrich" It was near a cemetery that is now located in Barrington, R.I. just south of Warren Ave, in Swansea, Ma. (prior was part of Swansea) Harl in his genealogy wonders if George did not embrass the Baptist religion, or searching for greater religious freedom?? The closest 1st Baptist Church was in Swansea at that time, est.ca 1667; Also written is many from Mendon traveled to Swansea to attend services, as it was the closest 1st Baptist church at that time.. George was not known to have a son George. so from deduction it is assumed this is one and the same George-1 , our Progenitor, Records show George was . back in Mendon by 1675, if he had ever left.. I did not research the above,, It is from " A branch of the Aldrich Family in America, by Harl P, Aldrich Jr. ScD. However I do know that other Mendon Founding Fathers also went to Swansea at that time, One being Benjamin Albee. Just a thought!!!! It does make us wonder, that George -1, never named a son George??? Wonder if old genealogist/Historians , missed something here??? by not looking any further. I would presume George -1, was abt. 60 yrs old at this time, Could it have been a son???? or did another George Aldrich exist at that time??? No records I've ever seen give any indication of either. So we must assume till further proof , it was George Aldrich-1. Can anyone else add anything to this mystery?? P.S. Jim, your last name Bullock, is interesting . one of my ancestors Alice Flint m/1 in Salem Ma. a Henry Bullock and had 2 children; m/2 , John Pickering.. Are you related to this line?? 3. Hi John: I just had the opportunity to look up the ancestry of your grandfather's uncle George Eddy Aldrich. I have found him in the GAG on pg 225 and 226. Would you please give some additional details on your particular line back to Eddy and Hannah (Hall) Aldrich. Also, the Aldrich Blacksmith Shop at Pomfret Landing would be something that the Killinly Historical Soceity would love to have a copy of for their collection of Old buildings and land marks. If you are still in the Windham Co., CT area, I have some names you can contact in regards to this. There is quite a good family file there at the Killingly Historical Society and they are steadily building up an excellent collection of Windham Co., CT, and also taking in some RI material since the RI state line is so close. 1. [ALDRICH-L] Letter from John Aldrich

    3. Here is an interesting Letter which I just received- - -------------------------------------------------------- From: LMAJWA <LMAJWA@aol.com> Date: Tue, 28 Apr 1998 01:14:05 EDT To: jaldrich@wsii.com Subject: aldrich family association X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 sub 18 My name is john William aldrich, and I just discovered your web page about the descendents of George Aldrich. I have only about a weeks worth of experience with the internet, and am having some problems with logging on to your web page. as I gain more expertise with this new fangled communications device, I will sign in on your guest book. I was born in Putnam, Connecticut on January 6, 1945. My cousin completed a genealogy of our line of Aldriches many years ago, and we are descended from old George. I am very interested in searching for information about my ancestors, and have quite a lot of information about some of them, including George Eddy Aldrich, my grandfather's uncle, who homesteaded in Parker, Colorado in the 1880's, with his mother, Hannah Hall Aldrich, a descendent of Mayflower passenger, John Howland. Howland was washed overboard during that stormy crossing, but was rescued by grabbing hold of the ropes hanging from the side of the ship to stabilize it. They were from East Woodstock, and Thompson, Connecticut, and Hannah was the wife of Eddy Aldrich. George E. Aldrich never married, and was buried in Denver in 1925. I possess an old photo album of the pair on their homestead near Parker, the San Carlo Ranche. I also have some hand colored photos of the Aldrich Blacksmith Shop at Pomfret Landing, Connecticut. I will try to get back into your web page tomorrow. Perhaps the internet server will be more cooperative then. my e-mail address is LMAJWA@aol.com I look forward to hearing from you soon. JWA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- My reply: Hello John, Thank you for your most interesting message. Our Web page can be difficult to reach at times. It may not be your fault. It is on a very busy server which may be slow at certain times of the day. Also there is a large graphic image of our Aldrich Coat-of Arms which may take awhile to load on your computer. I would be very interested in learning more about your family ancestors. Would you write up a short essay about George Eddy Aldrich and Hanah Hall? I would love to feature that on the Aldrich Web Page. If I could somehow get a copy of that Aldrich Blacksmith Shop picture I would like to see it too. I also am a descendent of John Howland ( from my mother's side). I did not know about that interesting incident when John Howland feel overboard! Amazing! I would like to invite you to become s member of the National Aldrich Association. We charge only $5.00 per year. We are having our annual Family Reunion on the third weekend in July. This is being held in a small country town (Swanzey) New Hampshire. We have many activities planned. Swanzey is holding their "Old Home Day" that weekend and it is sure to be a good time. I will be happy to send you more information. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. 3. John! I am very much aware of that site. It is of a commercial nature in disguise. I dare you to mention Rootsweb at that place. You will get a threatening message from the owner there. The owner of the site had last summer announced his intention to commercialize as soon as possible as his site get to a point. He plagarized the thousands of the surnames from Rootsweb. There were a few of the Aldrich cousins there and they would not have got their answers if I had not gone there to tell the individuals about this Aldrich-L mailing list. I already explained few months ago concerning that site on this mailing list and the reason why the genforum site is to be avoid at all cost to protect you and me. That site is not what we need or want. In matter of days or weeks this mailing list's archived messages will be available as soon as some bugs are ironed out at Rootsweb (The server Rootsweb bought from a company turned out to be full of lemons and it was sent back - and Rootsweb folks is custom building one to be host of web site of archived messages where you can go visit and search - all the way to the old ones that were at Maiser (That's Feb 1997). 1. [ALDRICH-L] Aldrich Mysteries
    2. SueMHR
    3. Hi all-- In case anyone is new, here is my husband's Aldrich line in brief. (It has been posted to the list already and I don't want to bore anyone.) 1. George Aldrich 2. Jacob Aldrich 3. Both David and Seth Aldrich 4. Edward Aldrich m1 Dinah Aldrich m2 Ann Chamberlain 5. Zaccheus Aldrich m. Naomi Sprague 6. Naomi Aldrich m. Caleb Chaffee I just came back from a week of research in Salt Lake City :) While there, I tried to get some documentation on generations 5 and 6. My father-in-law did the research but did not include his sources :( I ran into a bit of a problem--actually there are now 2 mysteries. I knew about the first one before and now I have a second. 1. Naomi Sprague who m. Zaccheus Aldrich is said to have been the dau. of Daniel Sprague and Sarah Ballou of Johnston RI. I have searched and searched and cannot find any documentation on her. The only information I have comes from the Sprague and Ballou Genealogies, both of which say that she is a dau. of Daniel Sprague and his first wife Sarah Ballou. This, I believe, is impossible. Sarah Ballou Aldrich died in 1736, which means that Naomi would have been born by then. Zaccheus Aldrich was born in 1755. I'm quite certain he wouldn't have married a woman 20 years his senior and then had a large family by her! No way! Conclusion: She is either a dau. of Daniel's second wife or not a dau. of Daniel at all. Does anyone know a Sprague family expert? There is definitely something amiss! 2. My father-in-laws records say that Zaccheus Aldrich and Naomi Sprague were probably married in Woodstock, CT, and that all of their children were born there. I decided to check this out. I looked at every available source for Woodstock, CT. They did indeed live there and I found birth records for 2 of their children, Naomi and Sprague. But I did not find a marriage record or births for the remaining children. I searched all the neighboring towns in CT, MA, and RI--nothing in Thompson, Killingly, Pomfret, Windham, Uxbridge, Douglas, Mendon, Providence Co., RI, etc. So where were they born?? And where were they married?? Zaccheus' father, Edward Aldrich, went to Franconia, NH, later in life--after his second family was born and partially grown. There really isn't any reason to believe that any of the children from his first marriage went up there. However, just to be sure, I checked. I find only the second family. No Zaccheus or other children from first marriage in Franconia. Zaccheus obviously wasn't in Woodstock the whole time. Does anyone know where he was? Or have any ideas? The two children that I found were younger, so the older ones are missing. (By the way, I did find Zaccheus Jr. living and having children in Pomfret later on.) Any help on this would be appreciated! Sue Roe
