    2. CHRISHAYNE
    3. I don't have very much to go on but I am searching for a James HAYNES who married Hannah ALDRICH/ALDRIDGE. James Haynes was born 1789 PA and married Hannah in Livingston County, NY. He was a potter, soldier War of 1812 and moved to Ohio. I believe this was after the 1830 census as they appear to be listed in Geneseo, Livingston County, NY, and they were probably married around 1810. Paulette Haynes

    3. Hi Aldrich Cousins: I believe I have discussed this family before with others. Abner Aldrich is the son of Jonathan and Mary (Wilson) Aldrich, but he was not born in Uxbridge, MA as per the Uxbridge Vital Records. Also, there is no record of Abner Aldrich and his family in the Killingly, CT vital records either. His wife Martha, is unknown at this time. 2. Gerald M. Church
    3. Aldrich Family Researchers: Can someone help me move from confusion to clarity about the parentage of my Abner Aldrich who died 26 October 1826 in Ontario County, New York? One source says he was the son of Jonathan and Mary Wilson Aldrich and was born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. Another source says he was the son of Jonathan and Abigail Walker Aldrich and was born in Glocester, Rhode Island. Abner was the father of Ziba born 1781 or 1782, Abner born 1790 and David born 1799. Could I get more evidence one way or the other? Does anyone have any? Thank you G.M. Church Humble, Texas

    1. [ALDRICH-L] George in Swansea:
    2. Alice Palladini
    3. Hi Again, I have never researched, myself, the Swansea area, for any accounts or records for any Aldrich's. I lost all my "IN" box messages last night so I do not have the excerpt that Jim Bullock , sent to the list.. If I recall correctly it was that George Aldrich was among 65 "first signers" recorded at a town meeting held 22 Feb. 1669/70, an agreement concerning this township's present & future. If not?? Then this record does exist! and he received 2 acres of land, at that time: All info I have about Swansea concerning a GEORGE is in the Harl Aldrich Genealogy.. From pg. 4 of the original Swansea Proprietors records: Nov. 18, 1670: "It is Agreed upon by the Town that a Plot of Ground lying and Being by the Hundred Acres Bounded on ye South West by the Meadow on the North by the Run of Water that is by the house of Georg Aldrig on the South East by a Pine Swamp with a little Neck of land to the East: Shall be for a Burying Ground place:" The burying place described in the 1670 action is believed to be the present NOCKUM HILL Cemetery located in Barrington, R.I. just south of Warren Av. in Swansea,Ma. ( Barrington & Warren R.I. and Somerset, Ma. were originally parts of Swansea: Annals Of Mendon, Ma. by J.G Metcalf: .May 19, 1669: ____________Aldrich, & George Alldrich and others sign a petition to the General Court: as an inhabitant of Mendon: (concerning the town boundrys and meadows: Dec 1, 1669: Concernig the Minister, Joseph Emerson: John Alderidge (sic) Peter Alderidge, Joseph Alderidge and others sign: (Seems strange that George disappears shortly after the settledMinister Emerson comes to Mendon???) May 7, 1670: There is only one recording in the Annals for 1670: Another petition to the General Court concerning grumbling about Taxes: Joseph Aldrich, is the only Aldrich that signed this petition.: June 14,1671: Divisions of Plains: The Mill Plains south of Benjamin Albee's land, and the Pine plain: no. 14: George Alderidge, no.22: Joseph Alderidge: July 22, 1672: Every 30 acre houselot should have five acres of Swamp; Division of Swamps (Mendon)i We find the no. of Proprietors at that time 34; Joseph Aldrich, is the onlly Aldrich mentioned in this division of land (swamp) I do not see any Aldrich mentioned again in the Annals till a passage by Metcalf, stating::" At the break of King Philips War the following persons were presumed to be heads of families: (date would be 14 July 1675:) viz:- John Aldridge, Joseph Aldridge, George Aldrich, and others: making 38 in all:" Jan, 3, 1680: "The names of those returned after the War: viz:- Peter Aldrich, Joseph Aldrich, George Aldrich, and others making 20 in all: Others returned afterwards:" If my history serves me right?? Swansea Ma. was the first town in Ma. to be attack by King Philip's Warriors. June 1675: Mendon was the first town to have any fatalities July 14, 1675: George is placed in Swansea in 1670- and we have to believe the record correct that he had a house in Swansea by Nov. 1670: Let's assume it was on the 2 acres. given to him as a "first signer" at that time: We know in Mendon he had at least 40 acres and more allotted in future divisions: We see from the Annals, if he resided in Swansea , it was between 1670 and 1675: According to the Annals of Mendon.. when the swamps lands were divided, where was George?? Did he remove to Swansea and returned to Mendon only after the KP War in 1680 , after his house was probably destroyed during K,P, War, in Swansea?? and thereafter never returned to Swansea?? As you note. Metcalf in the Annals of Mendon. PRESUMES, George Aldrich was a head of Household in 1675, in Mendon.. Was he?? There are many unanswered questions in many early histories of these pioneer settlers. When George returned to Mendon , did he go reside with his son in Uxbridge, Ma. and die in Uxbridge??? These are answers we'll probably never find.. but It's fun debating about all he probabilities, isn't it??? Anyone have anything to add, or have any other ideas?? Happy Hunting, Alice PS. I received a few private messages about George probably not having the same views as Willett , (Swansea's KEY man, so to speak) :) But I believe I have read that George was one of the few slave-holders in Mendon. And in the History Of Woonsocket. R.I. by E. Richardson there is a PRINCE ALDRICH mentioned, as being a black-man.. Do you think he was a descendant of one of George's slave??? Just a little something else to think about! Does anyone have the Histroy of Swansea??? Was Willett a slave -holder or an abolitionist???

    2. Alison Gene Franks
    3. Hi Karen: I have the Vital Records of Nantucket along with the History of Nantucket by Starbuck, and also Lands and Land Owners by Worth. The vitals do not indicate that the Cartrights are Quaker at all. That is not to say that they didn't become Quakers later on. But what I did look at this was not the case. Also, not all the entries that are listed in the Nantucket Vital Records actually took place on Nantucket. In fact a great many of them did not. The statement that I made about George Aldrich not naming a son George, nor did his son name a son George was in support that the only George Aldrich who could have been in Swansea, MA was George 1 himself. He certainly didn't remain there for any length of time. I have a Dorcas Cooley in my own lineage, and the Cooley's were not Quaker by a long shot. Very much the WASP. The Cooley's followed along with Rev. Thomas Hooker (my ancestor too), and he certainly wasn't a Quaker. 3. In a message dated 98-05-05 16:22:30 EDT, you write: << An aside to George: Dorcas/Tabitha was a subject of one of last Sunday's texts. Does anyone else have a Dorcas in their family line? We visited Haverford's Quaker collection, and I am now almost convinced that Dorcas Cartwright/ Cartwrite was not born into a Nantucket Quaker family. Is Dorcas more like a name from the Puritan tradition rather than that of a Quaker family? She is the mother of Abel(5) Aldrich, son of Abel, son of Seth (whom we know to be a Quaker), son of Jacob, son of George. Her ancestor Peter Folger is definitely identified as Congregational in the history of Quakerism on Nantucket Island. >> I have recently been doing research on the topic of naming practices. The name Dorcas, being a good Biblical name, would have been used by either Puritans or Quakers. The best bet is to look at the church records for both groups to see where you find her. Sue

    1. Re: [ALDRICH-L] The name George
    2. SueMHR
    3. A couple of comments: Sometimes people owned land in a place without ever living there. This could be the case here -- I don't know for sure but it certainly could be. Many times the "Proprietors" of a new town never moved there at all, etc. Regarding the name George--the Puritans usually did not use names of any of the Royal Family of England, nor did they use names of Anglican Church saints, even when they were both family names and Biblical names. There are exceptions, I know, but it wouldn't be common practice for them to do so. That may explain the lack of descendants named George. Sue

    1. [ALDRICH-L] The name George and a query about Dorcas
    2. Karen M. Girard Weiss
    3. George may be non-biblical, but it was still a good saint's name, especially for an Englishman. An early Essex Institute quarterly discusses the issue of choice of names as reflected by certain groups. This indicates a good break with the Church of England. An aside to George: Dorcas/Tabitha was a subject of one of last Sunday's texts. Does anyone else have a Dorcas in their family line? We visited Haverford's Quaker collection, and I am now almost convinced that Dorcas Cartwright/ Cartwrite was not born into a Nantucket Quaker family. 1. [ALDRICH-L] George Aldrich in Swansea, MA
    2. Jim Bullock
    3. Thanks to Alice and Alison who sent me replies about George-1 and the liklihood that he was in Swansea for a time. It does make sense--he doesn't show up in marriage and birth records for Swansea, but, of course, all of his children were born before he went there. It is a bit odd that George didn't have a son named George. I noticed that I didn't put in the address where I found George listed with the petitioners for Swansea's township. It is a short history of Swansea at: http://www.enl.umassd.edu/InteractiveCourse/kcabral/history.htm Alice asked about my Bullock ties with Henry Bullock of Salem. My first known Bullock ancestor was Richard (1622-1667) of Rehoboth. There is "documentation" that he was the son of Henry of Salem, Edward of Dorchester, William of RI, John of Essex (sometimes Berkshire), England, and John of Shropshire, England. He was also said to be a younger brother of Henry and/or Edward plus another brother who went to Virginia. Take your choice. His son by his first marriage was Samuel. By his second marriage he had Israel, John, and Richard. So one of the Johns may have been his father. My other grandfather's ancestors also are from Bristol County, MA. John Medbury was in Swansea by 1680. My Aldrich line is George, Jacob, Moses, Caleb, William, William, and Mary Robinson Aldrich, who married my gg grandfather, John W. Medbery.
