I'm looking for a Thompson B. Aldridge. He was born @ 1823 somewhere in AL. He was married to a Matilda A. ?. They had a daughter named Martha Emily Aldridge who was born in May 1860 somewhere in AR. Can anyone help? Thanks, Paula
My maternal grandfather's paternal grandmother was Mary Robinson Aldrich. I'm trying to figure out where the "Robinson" in her name came from. That is, I wonder if it's a given name or a name by a previous marriage. Mary's paternal line is: George, Jacob, Moses, Caleb, William, and William. Her father, William, b. bet 1780-1785 in Smithfield, RI, d. Apr 1831 in Greenfield, NY, married abt 1805 Mercy Farnum, b. abt 1789. Mary's sister, Lydia married a Henry B. Robinson. I have no data on either of them. But this shows that the Aldriches knew some Robinsons at the time. But I don't know if there were any other family links. Mary b. abt 1817 in Greenfield, NY, d. 1905 in Clinton, OK (home of both sets of my grandparents) married my great great grandfather, John W. (White?) Medbery. John was born 7 Apr 1806 in Greenfield, NY and died 16 Jan 1870 in Washington, DC (where he sometimes did business. He sold supplies to the US Army.) An interesting sideline on Mary is that I have a handwritten, signed copy of a lease where Mary rented her house and the furniture on 15 May 1864 to Phillip D. Armour for one year. It was at 477 Milwaukee St. in Milwaukee, WI and was rented for $100 monthly. I also have the brass plaque that came off of the front door of the house. I would be most interested in hearing from anyone with information about Mary Robinson Aldrich and her family. And if anyone is interested in her husband's side of the family, descendants of John Medbury (1654-1694) of Swansea, MA, I have quite a bit of information on that line. Hi all-- I'm finding that I didn't get all of my mail answered last month! Holidays were very busy!! In a message dated 97-12-30 12:37:33 EST, you write: << Hi alice and All: According to Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language 1989 pg 891: Meeting house 1. a house or building for religious worship 2. a house of worship for Quakers -------The Puritans called their place of worship a meeting house too. This was not just a Quaker term. You are correct Alice: George Aldrich was not a Quaker, or at least he did not profess to be one. If he were, he's more than likely have been buried in the Quaker Cemetery then, and I very much doubt this was the case. ------I agree, no evidence that George Aldrich was a Quaker. Also, there weren't any Quakers at all in NE until sometime in the 1650's. These were Puritans who converted at the hands of Quaker missionaries. They were driven out of MA and most went to RI or places beyond. The great Quaker migration from England occurred later and was mostly to Pennsylvania area. Sue
Hi All: I just had a short message from Alice. Al may get to come home tomorrow. He had congestive heart failure, and sadly enough, nothing that can be done for him. It is just a day to day way of life. I experienced this with my husband who passed away in 1991 of congestive heart failure, and the hardest part is watching someone struggle to breathe, and not anything can be done. Please say a prayer for Alice and her husband, Al. A note would be nice. Her e-mail address is: < alicep@ultranet.com> Thanks Alison
Hi All: I received a fast message from Alice today. Her husband is very ill in the hospital, so she's unable to "chat" with us here in Aldrich-ville. Her husband, Al, is very ill with congestive heart failure, with a touch of bronchitis to add insult to injury. So it is not easy as she doesn't drive to start with and does the work of 3 as Al cannot much of anything at all to assist her. I'm sure she'd appreciate a prayer or two from all of us. Regards, Alison

Hello ALDRICH Folks, Here is a forward of a forwarded inquiry from one of YOUR OWN! Can anyone help him out? Thanks, Clay
I'm sending this to all the Rootsweb Surname lists that I subscribe to. There is a message regarding the FCC that has been circulating. I have received it no less than 25 times from people on various Rootsweb mail lists. It is a HOAX folks! Please don't forward it anymore. It is my understanding that this is a very old message. Someone has changed the date to make it look current and sent it out to some Rootsweb mail lists--from there it has mushroomed!! I don't know why anyone would do such a thing--I guess they are getting there jollys from it?? Perhaps they hope we will flood the FCC with mail? I don't know. But let's put a stop to it! Thanks for listening. Sue Roe
Recipe #2, part 2 Besides all of the above Home Sources, an important means of getting information is the personal interview. The best way to do this is by a personal visit (and a tape recorder if the interviewee doesn't mind). Before you go, let the person know the reason for your visit so they will be prepared to answer your questions. And be sure you have a plan, a list of questions to ask. You direct the conversation so you will get the information you really want. If an "in person" interview is not possible, you can use the telephone or write a letter. Again, have your questions ready so that you will get the information you want. If you want to ask questions over the phone, a note to find out when it will be convenient to call, and the reason for the call, is always a good idea. SUGGESTED PERSONAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS What do you know about your ancestors? Did any family members serve in the military? Which war? What church did your family attend? Do you know any family members who have done genealogical research? Do you know of any special family celebrations or gatherings? What family traditions do you know of? When and where were your parents born? How did they meet? When and where were they married? What were their occupations? What kind of education did they have? If college, which one? When and where did your parents die? Where are they buried? Who were their brothers and sisters? Ask the same questions about their grandparents. When and where were you born? Who are your brothers and sisters? Birth dates? Etc. What places have you lived? What was your childhood like? Are there any special events or memories you would like to share? Go to the oldest members of your family first -- otherwise they may be gone before you get to it. If you write letters, you can ask your questions with spaces for answers and request that they simply fill out the answers and return the letter to you. But be reasonable -- don't ask for too much at once. A series of short letters is better than one long one. Example: Date Your name Your address Address of relative Dear Aunt Mabel, I am gathering information on our Cook family line and I was wondering if you could tell me about your parents: When and where were they born? When and where were they married? When and where did they die? Where are they buried? Do you have any certificates or Bible records of these events? If so, may I have photocopies? I will be glad to reimburse you for the copying cost. To make it easy, you can simply answer my questions on this letter and return it to me in the enclosed self-addressed, stamped envelope. If you have any additional information about your family that you would like to share, you can use the back side of this letter. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, OR Dear Grandma, I am planning to write a history of our Russell family. I was wondering if you could tell me who has the family Bible? Mother remembers seeing it when she was a child, but doesn't know where it is now. I hope you do! Love, OR Dear Distant Relative, We share a common ancestor, Oliver Hartwell Cook. I am writing a history of the Cook family and I would like to include your branch. I would appreciate it if you would fill out the enclosed ancestor chart and family group sheet to the best of your ability. I am enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope for you to return them in. I will be happy to share the family history with you when it is complete. Sincerely, Except with a very close relative, you should always enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and offer to pay the cost if you are asking them to copy something. It is a good idea to keep copies of all your correspondence. HAPPY HUNTING! Sue Roe SueMHR@aol.com
SUE'S COOK BOOK, Recipe #2, part 1 TRACING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY -- STEP ONE HOME SOURCES In beginning genealogical research, you always begin with yourself and work back one generation at a time. Therefore, the first step will be to do a thorough job of searching your "home sources." These are the things that can be found right in your home or the homes of your parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. If you do a good job on this step, the next steps will be much easier! The idea here is to contact every single living relative you can find to see what they already know and what documents they already have. (Sample letters will follow.) Dear Nancy, Thank you very much for your reply. I am forwarding it to the List so that it can be shared with all of the cousins. I am not currently "researching" the ALDRICH line because I have already connected my wife back to George the Emigrant. I am also not "collecting" ALDRICH information because that is being done by our Listowner, W. David Samuelson, and by the historian of the NAA, Robert Criswell. I do not want to duplicate their efforts. However, when I discover "new" information that I think might help the members of this list, I pass it on. Have you "connected" your ggrandmother Martha to George? If not, perhaps you should submit a "query" to this list and/or ask that she be placed on the NAA AWOL web page. In the future, if you have information (or questions/queries) of a "general" nature (non-personal), I suggest that you send it to the entire list, instead of to an individual. That way all of our cousins will have an opportunity to read it firsthand, and respond accordingly. Who knows, your information might help a "lost" cousin establish their link back to George or they might have information that you desperately need. By the way, I couldn't help but notice that I sent my message to the list today (Jan 6) at 06:22 PM (PST) and that you sent your reply on Jan 2 at 03:44 AM. What time-zone are you in? :-) :-) May I suggest you check your computer's clock? If you need help resetting it, I would be more than happy to do so. I've been asked to post these to the Aldrich List and David has given permission--so here goes. Just ignor the references to Cook--the principles are the same. Sue SUE'S COOK BOOK My name is Sue Roe. I live in Seal Beach, CA. Your Cook List Owner, Elinor Stephens, has asked me to write a column for the Cook Mail list that will give helpful hints for doing genealogical research. I'm going to call my column SUE'S COOK BOOK and I will be posting "Recipes" for doing various things. I hope this will be helpful to many of you. RECIPE #1 -- HOW TO POST A QUERY When posting a query to an online mail list or genealogy bulletin board, there are a few simple rules: 1. Start with your earliest known ancestor and give generations down to yourself (or down as far as you wish to go--you may want to list only the generations that have the surname you are searching for). Number the generations. 2. Give full name, birth date and place, death date and place, marriage date and place and name of spouse. If dates are not known, estimate. 3. Be sure to include your name and how people can get in touch with you. The idea is to keep it simple, while giving enough information so that people can see if they might tie into your line. The queries that people will not bother to read and respond to are the ones that are either too long and complicated or the ones that are lacking dates and places. Here is an example: My Cook Line 1. Robert COOK, Sr. b. abt 1636, England, d. 17 Sept 1699, Dorchester, MA, m. Sarah (surname unknown) abt. 1670. 2. Capt. Robert COOK, Jr. b. 9 Dec 1670, Boston, MA, d. 1 Apr. 1756, Needham, MA, m. Submit WEEKS 26 Oct 1693. 3. Elijah COOK b. 4 Apr 1696, Dorchester, MA, d. 1743, Worcester, MA, m. Deborah PARKER 10 Dec 1718, Dedham, MA. 4. Enoch COOK b. 19 Mar 1721, Needham, MA, d. 4 Feb 1797, Dummerston, VT, m. Lucy Rice 21 Nov 1745, Leicester, MA. 5. Elijah COOK b. 9 Feb 1752, Worcester, MA, d. 12 June 1812, probably Delaware Co., NY, m. Relief "Laifa" HARTWELL 1779, Putney, VT. 6. Ralph COOK, b. 2 Mar 1787, Putney, VT, d. 30 Sept 1866, Adams Co., IL, m. Jobje "Dollie" VAN BUREN 8 May 1814, Oswego Co., NY. 7. Oliver Hartwell COOK b. 15 Nov 1818, Otsego Co., NY, d. 27 Feb 1907, San Diego Co., CA, m. Clarissa QUINCY 30 Nov 1843, Adams Co., IL. 8. Mary Elizabeth COOK b. 8 Feb 1845, Adams Co., IL, d. 14 may 1899, San Diego co., CA, m. Joseph CHILSON 1 Aug 1860, Miami Co., KS. Here is where the line "females out" -- I could end the query here -- or I could go on down to myself, as follows. 9. Mary Alice CHILSON b. 14 Aug 1861, Miami Co., KS, d. 26 Sept 1949, San Diego Co., CA, m. Allen RUSSELL 15 Oct 1881, Miami Co., KS. 10. Maria RUSSELL and Ernest Stephen HILLIER--my grandparents. 11. Hartwell Russell George HILLIER and Elsie VOS--my parents. 12. Susan Marie HILLIER--me!--m. to James Herbert ROE. If anyone ties into this Cook line, I would love to hear from you! I have much more detail and would be glad to share. Sue Roe (SueMHR@aol.com) 117 Harvard Lane Seal Beach, CA 90740-2508

Alice, Alison, and all, I may be taking you up on your offers to do look-ups in your books one of these days--need to figure out what I still need from Mendon and Uxbridge first. I have Southern Massachusetts Cemetery Collection, Vols. 1 and 2 by Susan Salisbury. I would be glad to do look-ups. Towns included are: Blackstone, Douglas, Grafton, Hopedale, Mendon, Milford, Millville, Oxford, Sutton, Upton, Uxbridge, Whittinsville, Bellingham, Medway, Attleborough, Dighton, Franklin, Holliston, North Attleborough, Plainville, Rehoboth, Swansea, and Wrentham. Actually, I could just extract all the Aldrich's and post them--would this be helpful? Sue
