    3. Hi All, Interesting indeed!!! Could be George's sister???? Anyone working back from George-1 ..in England records?? Know the Univ. of Conn. has a HUGE dept. of all old English records.. I have quite a few that were extracted years ago on some of my other lines.. The earliest records available are several types of rolls; There are few records before 1086 through the 1299's. Anyone checking these, please remember the spelling on sur- names varies,considerably.. They Have: The Hundred's Rolls; spans hundred's of years: Patent Rolls -1216-1578 Close Rolls-1227-1402-1405-1509 Inquistion Post M.-1216-1399 Misc. Inquisitions-1219-1399 Fines-1272-1509 Deeds- Charter Rolls- 1226-1516 Liberate Rolls-1226-1272 Fee Rolls-198-1293 State and Domestic papers-1625-6; 1660-61; 1674-1679 Letters foriegn and domestic. - 1509-12 and much more such material; for researching.. No doubt other big libraries do too! Maybe someone will have a minute or two ot a year or two, to look through some of these for our George's family. :) Happy Hunting, Alice At 10:07 AM 1/24/98 -0800, W. 3. Recipe #4 --- Using Soundex --- cont. No matter how long a name is, it's Soundex Code is always the first letter of the name and 3 numbers. In a long name, the extra letters are disregarded. For example: If you are coding the name WASHINGTON, you would slash out A H I and O. The code would be W followed by the numbers for S N and G. The T and final N would be disregarded. The code is W252. If the name is short, you will have to add zeros to the end. For example: If you are coding the name KUHN, you would cross out the U and H. That leaves only K and N. The code would be K500. If you are coding a name with a prefix, such as Van, Von, De, Di, Le, etc., you should code it both with and without the prefix because it may be listed under either code. This seems to be inconsistent. Mac and Mc are not considered to be prefixes so you would always code with them. In names with double letters, you TREAT THE DOUBLE LETTER AS ONE and slash the second one out. In names with letters side by side that have the same number on the Soundexing Code, you TREAT THE LETTERS AS ONE and slash the others out. For example: In the name JACKSON, C and K and S all have the same code number. Use only the C and cross the other two out--as well as the A and the O. The code would be J250. ONCE THE NAME IS CORRECTLY CODED, you are ready to use the microfilm Soundex Card Index, which is organized by state. Look, first, under the correct state, then find the correct code number. The names will be arranged alphabetically by first name or initial. You will need to review the microfilmed cards for all the persons with the first name you are looking for to find your ancestor. Once you have found the correct card, copy down the following information: Name of Head of Family County and State of Residence Vol. # E.D. # (Enumeration District) Sheet # Line # With this information, you will be able to easily locate the entry on the census film. This will save much precious time. Otherwise, you would have to search the entire county or township (if it is known). Helpful Hint: Code all your surnames at home and keep the list with you. This way you won't have to keep re-coding them each time you do census research. Happy Hunting, Cookies!

    3. SUE'S COOK BOOK Recipe #4 USING THE SOUNDEX SYSTEM (in two parts) To find an individual name among the millions listed in certain census years (1880 and later), you will use an indexing and filing system called the Soundex (sometimes called Miracode). The Soundex is a coded surname index based on the way a surnamed sounds, rather than on the way it is spelled. Surnames that sound similar, even though they are spelled differently, are all filed together. That way, even if the name was misspelled on the census, you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. To search for a particular surname, you must first work out it's code. Every code consists of a letter followed by three numbers. The letter is always the first letter of the surname. The numbers are assigned according to the Soundex Coding Guide below. ****************************************************************************** ******************** SOUNDEX CODING GUIDE This number Represents these letters 1 B P F V 2 C S K G J Q X Z 3 D T 4 L 5 M N 6 R The letters A E I O U W Y H are DISREGARDED, EXCEPT when they are the first letter of the name. ****************************************************************************** ******************** Here are the basic steps for Soundex coding a surname. STEP 1 On line 1, write the surname you are coding. Slash out the letters A E I O U W Y H. For example: If you are coding the name JOHNSON, you would slash out the O's and the H. STEP 2 On line 2, write the first letter of the surname. After it, write the numbers, found on the Soundex Coding Guide, that represent the next 3 unslashed letters in the name. For example: The code for JOHNSON would be J525. To be continued...

    3. Hi Lori: Ok - I'll put down what I am doing and go back to this. Rachel Aldrich is the dau of Peter and Miriam Ray. She did not marry Dan Daniels, and Dan Daniels is actually Darius who married Ruth Aldrich, b. 29 Jun 1741, dau of #62 Joseph and Elizabeth (Prentice) Aldrich. Some of the data is incorrect in the Mendon, MA VR's, but the children AJ assigned to Rachel and Dan Daniels in the GAG belong to Ruth and Darius. Then in #62, AJ further had the error that Ruth married Dorcas Daniels. This is a glaring error, which is what I also pointed outwhen I did the spiel back before the holidays. Therefore, William Comstock is correct. Also, Rachel had a sister Mariam, who was suppsedly born 1751 in Mendon. She is not listed in Mendon vitals. I think that Peter and Meiriam went to Smithfield, or close by and that Miriam and last child Nathaniel (Rev War) was more than likely also b. in RI. Cannot prove it, because I don't have the Smithfield or Cumberland RI vitals. I did some more work on her brother, Nathaniel. He was in Maine. In 1790 he was living in Freeport, and this is near where Wolf's Neck State Park is now. Regards, alison

I'm sure many newbees at genealogy will benefit from all these helpful tips.. and us oldies, will too. :) Looking forward to seeing more , we all need all the help we can get. I received a unpublished ALBEE genealogy today.. compiled by Robert Allbee, of des Moines Iowa, It covers The Albee's of Ma. and Vermont with Part 111 being composed now, of Albee in IOWA. Sorry to say it does not have an index. :( but it is 70 pages of very very well researched material. Ma. Benjamin Albee;- 1600's James Albee;- 1640- to c, 1717 or later; John Albee;- 1678-1743/44 Vt. Ebenezer Albee ;-1743-1818 Ebenezer Albee;- (1768-1846) Eleazer Albee;- (1785-1864) George Washington Albee ;- 1799-1872) went to Iowa: Iowa; 1855 on being compiled later: Gustavau Allbee;-1822-1905 Elbert A, Allbee ;1849-1935 Gustavus Allbee;- 1879-1947; George Allbee- 1905-1974 Robert-1928 Only a few Aldrich's married into the Albee line, but if your one of the few who may descend from these lines, I'd be happy to share any contents of the genealogy with you.. It does not cover other children besides those listed above..but has great history, and records that maybe of some interest. Thought I'd pass this on in case it will help anyone. Awaiting a North- Easter to hit the area tonight thru Sat. Snow, sleet and icy rains, power-outages are expected , if my mail bounces, try again.. it'll be because of the storm. 1. [ALDRICH-L] Calendar change
    2. SueMHR
    3. In a message dated 98-01-02 14:01:07 EST, you write: << Thanks for the info on the old/new calendar. For some of us who are not as experienced with this, could you please tell us the difference and give us the exact date this "change" took place? >> A couple of people have asked for a more detailed explanation on the subject of "calendar change"... Prior to 1752, all British colonies were still on the Julian Calendar. In 1752, all of Britain made the switch to the Gregorian Calendar, which is the one we use today. The Julian Calendar was an ecclesiastical calendar dating back to 325 AD. On this calendar, the first day of the year was March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation (which occurs 9 months before Christmas). Therefore, on this calendar, March is the first month of the year. When interpreting dates in the British Colonies, prior to 1752, you need to be aware that they were using a different calendar. (This problem does not occur in New Netherlands, however, because the Dutch did not use the Julian calendar. The Quakers didn't always use them either--they had to for business purposes, but their church records were usually not on the Julian calendar.) Prior to 1752, if a date is written as 2/8/1750 or 2nd 8th mo 1750, it is the 2nd of October 1750. This is pretty simple. It becomes more complicated if the date is in the period between Jan 1 and Mar 25. Let's say the date is 2nd 11th mo 1750. This would be the 2nd of Jan 1750--but on the Gregorian calendar it would actually be in 1751. This date should be rendered as 2 Jan 1750/51. This indicates that the date in the original record was 1750, but that on the modern (Gregorian) calendar it was actually in 1751. ("Double dating" should not be used after 1752, but you may find that some early record keepers did it anyway--I guess they wanted to keep us on our toes!!) For a more detailed discussion of this matter, you can read the section "Calendars" in The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy by Val D. Greenwood. It is in nearly every genealogical library. I hope this will help those who still had questions on the matter! Sue
