    3. Here are a couple of articles from the soon to be released Heritage Book of Cherokee Co AL. I am interested in corresponding and sharing information on these family lines. > Josiah Henderson: Early Pioneer of Alabama > This story begins with the humble and uneventful birth of our ancestor > Josiah Henderson. As yet, we have not discovered his parents, although > some researchers believe he is actually John Josiah, the son of Joseph M. > Henderson (1772 VA) and Jane Pickens (1776); grandson of Agnes (whose > father was Josiah Johnston) and William Henderson, of Mecklenburg, North > Carolina. This John Josiah had a nephew named Josiah, as well. It is also > possible that Josiah is, James (middle name unknown), a son of Charles > Henderson, Sr. James, of Charles, has not been found. Some of Charles' > children were in Greene County, TN at the same time as Josiah. Also, the > family of Archibald Henderson, relative to Charles, married into the Cole > family, as did the family of Josiah. > We do know that our Josiah was born about 1794 in South Carolina and > married his wife, Edeline, before 1830, probably in SC. They appear as > young parents, Josiah aged 30-40 years and Edeline aged 20-30 years in the > 1830 Buncombe, North Carolina census. They have four sons, two under five > years, one 5-10 years, and one 10-15 years. My James Matthew was born in > 1831, in Spartanburg, according to his CSA pension papers but we have not > identified the other three. > By 1840, they had moved into the adjoining county of Greene Tennessee. > Three of the first four sons are still with them. They have two more sons > and two daughters. Many other Hendersons lived in Greene County in the > 1830s and 1840s. Some of the Henderson heads of house were George, John, > Joseph, and Margaret. We do not know if, or how, these Hendersons are > related to Josiah. One may be the (fourth) son from the 1830 census who is > no longer with the family. Their first daughter, Matildia (1834) and their > son, Josiah William (March 12, 1837) were born there. > The family continued to move searching for a better life. They appear in > Walker County Georgia (1850) and Walker County Alabama (1860) before > finally settling in Cherokee County Alabama (1870). It must have been > trying times for this young family. Josiah struggled to feed them by > farming, fishing and hunting. What catalyst, except for economics, would > drive this growing family from place to place? > Be it wanderlust or hope, something drove the family on. By the birth of > their second daughter, Elizabeth in 1836, the family was in McLamoore's > Cove, Walker County Georgia. The last two children, Martha Edeline > (7/3/1839) and David (1844) were also born there. > On July 14, 1853, James Matthew Henderson married Matilda, daughter of > Benjamin Cole Josiah William married another Cole daughter, Jincy Missouri. > It wasn't long before daughter Martha married Benjamin C. Cole, brother > of Matilda and Jincy. > Josiah and his family continued their quest. They were in Walker County > Alabama when the Civil War began. James Matthew enlisted in the army of > the Confederate States of America in Jasper Alabama in October 1861. > Brother Josiah William enlisted on February 22, 1862 at Shelby Springs. > Lastly, David, the youngest son enlisted on December 15, 1863. > James Matthew and Josiah William returned home after the war but David was > not so lucky. Exposure to the wintry weather, coupled with the lack of > adequate clothing and sufficient rations, resulted in David's contraction > of pneumonia. On March 25, 1864, just three short months after enlisting, > David gave the ultimate gift of his Southern commitment, his life. He died > at Gilmer Hospital in Marietta Georgia. Sarah Clarenda was the daughter of James Sinard III (b1765) (said to be the first white settler in that part of NC, now Transylvania Co, originally Buncombe Co NC) and Margaret Lamb (b 1766). Margaret Lamb was the daughter of Thomas Lamb Jr and the second daughter of Moytoy. Moytoy was the father (or grandfather ??) of Attakullakulla. I am searching for the mother of Savannah who was a Cherokee from GA. Savannah was her only child and she died during or shortly after giving birth. Savannah's father was William. William Studdard had a wife before Savannah's mother and one afterward. I have more information on his other wives and the other children, if anyone is interested. Savannah was related to Bynum, Daugherty, Kuykendall, Cooper, Burkhardt, fortenberry, and Davis families.) > > Benjamin Cole: South Carolina to Alabama Benjamin Cole was born in South Carolina about 1798. He married a young woman also from South Carolina, before 1820. We do not know her name and, consequently, nothing of her family. We are also uncertain as to the parents of Ben but do have some clues. Ben is listed on the 1820 census in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He is married and both he and his wife are between 16 and 26 years. They have one “free colored” living with them. It is assumed that they had been married for only a short time because no children are listed with them. Nearby are five other Cole households. John and Baptist Cole are 45 (years) and over; therefore, old enough to be the father of Ben and the others. Henry and James are 26-45 years and could be brothers to Ben. Rodum Cole is 16-26 years and foreign born. Occupations of Rodum and John were listed as “commerce.” The others were all farmers. They were still in Lancaster County in 1830. Census shows Ben and wife have two daughters and one son under 5 years and one son 5-10 years. They still lives near John Cole. By the 1840 Lancaster County census, Ben has nine children enumerated with him – four boys and five girls. His wife still appears in the household. He now lives near another, younger John and a Randolph Cole. > Ben and his family next appear on the Cherokee County Georgia census in > 1850. He is still farming and has land with an estimated value of $350. His wife is no longer listed and is presumed dead. She obviously died sometime after 1841, the year her youngest child, John, was born. The Cole children are listed as William (26 years), Sandy (possibly Alexander, 24 years), Iona (20 years), Lucy A. (19 years), Martha (17 years), Matilda (15 years), Benjamin C. (13 years), > Jincy Missouri (11 years), and John (9 years). > Three of Ben Cole’s children married children of Josiah Henderson. Matilda > Cole and James Matthew Henderson married on July 14, 1853 in DeKalb County Alabama. Shortly after that, Jincy Missouri married Josiah William Henderson and Benjamin C. Cole married Martha Henderson. Another son William, married Dicey Sinyard (Siniard) December 31, 1846 in Paulding County Georgia. Dicey was > the daughter of Henry C. Sinyard and Dicey Hulsey. Son, Sandy, married > Mary Davis in Cherokee County Georgia on December 17, 1854. > By the 1860 census, we find the father Ben living in Cherokee County > Alabama. He has a new wife, Winnie, and a ten year old son, James. Ben and Winnie must have married soon after the 1850 census. Ben’s daughter Matilda and her husband, James Matthew Henderson are also on this 1860 Cherokee County census. > We know that son, Benjamin, served in the CSA during the Civil War. He > enlisted on November 17, 1861 in Blount County Alabama. He went with a recruiting officer by the name of DuBose to Mobile where he joined Captain Jim Smith. He was in Company B - 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment, Crocheron > Light Dragoons. In the fall of 1862, he fought in the Battle of Shilo. Next, he joined Bragg’s Escort. He was wounded in the right thigh during one of the battles. The Henderson brother’s, husbands to his sister's Matilda and Jincy also fought for the Confederacy. ( Jincy and Josiah had moved to Walker County Alabama just prior to the war but returned to Cherokee County sometime between 1865 and 1870.) > In 1870 Ben, the son, helped black Methodists to organize a church of their > own in Collinsville. Prior to that time, blacks had a couple of benches in the back of the white Methodist Church about 2 miles west of Collinsville. Some of the charter members of the church included Lizzie and Tony Collins, Pallie > and Margaret Johnson, Lucer and John Brown, W. J. Goode and Margaret > Johnson. We find the families of Matilda and Jincy living in Cherokee County just off Highway 68 , near the DeKalb County line, in the late 1800s. Their brother William and his > family live nearby.
