I am currently trying to decipher the "Polly Benge" legend that has been passed around in Dekalb County for many years. A narrative was written about this legend by Charlie Scott, a prominent Fort Payne lawyer. He was never able to completely solve the mystery of this legend. Here are some of the name mentioned in the narrative: Polly Benge Sam Stewart John and Mary Robertson Stewart and their son Newell Stewart Bob Poe Archibald and Nancy Stewart Ashberry and their son Robert(Bob)Ashberry W.S. Smart & Mr. Burton Residents of Pea Ridge: Mary Ballard and Uncle Aaron, Jasper Jones and Aunt Becky, Polk and George Stoner, Abner York and his wife, Walker, John, and Marion Biddle, Tobe Keith, and Zilman Williams.
