I have just subscribed to this list, thought I would jump right in and post my surnames. I am interested in hearing from anyone that is researching the GODARD,(GODDARD), and/or FIKE families in DeKalb county. I am trying to make a connection to Thomas GODARD. I live in Northern CA so if I can be of help to anyone researching their family out here, I;ll be glad to try and help. Jo
I just received this response from the Bureau of Land Management. This response did not address my genealogical question, but just thought it might be of interest to someone. This section 11 is on Lookout Moutain very near Beeson's Gap which goes up the Mountain from Fort Payne. The SESE of section 11, township 7S and range 9E was issued to Samuel Miller as a Military Warrant in 1856. The patentee (heir of Samuel) was Elizabeth S. McSpadden. The rest of the section was issued to Wills Valley Railroad. The records are not in the database because we have not automated the Military Warrants or rail road patents yet.

He married a young woman also from South Carolina, before 1820. We do not know her name and, consequently, nothing of her family. We are also uncertain as to the parents of Ben but do have some clues. Ben is listed on the 1820 census in Lancaster County, South Carolina. He is married and both he and his wife are between 16 and 26 years. They have one free colored living with them. It is assumed that they had been married for only a short time because no children are listed with them. Nearby are five other Cole households. John and Baptist Cole are 45 (years) and over; therefore, old enough to be the father of Ben and the others. Henry and James are 26-45 years and could be brothers to Ben. Rodum Cole is 16-26 years and foreign born. Occupations of Rodum and John were listed as commerce. The others were all farmers. They were still in Lancaster County in 1830. Census shows Ben and wife have two daughters and one son under 5 years and one son 5-10 years. They still lives near John Cole. By the 1840 Lancaster County census, Ben has nine children enumerated with him four boys and five girls. His wife still appears in the household. He now lives near another, younger John and a Randolph Cole. > Ben and his family next appear on the Cherokee County Georgia census in > 1850. He is still farming and has land with an estimated value of $350. His wife is no longer listed and is presumed dead. She obviously died sometime after 1841, the year her youngest child, John, was born. The Cole children are listed as William (26 years), Sandy (possibly Alexander, 24 years), Iona (20 years), Lucy A. (19 years), Martha (17 years), Matilda (15 years), Benjamin C. (13 years), > Jincy Missouri (11 years), and John (9 years). > Three of Ben Coles children married children of Josiah Henderson. Matilda > Cole and James Matthew Henderson married on July 14, 1853 in DeKalb County Alabama. Shortly after that, Jincy Missouri married Josiah William Henderson and Benjamin C. He was wounded in the right thigh during one of the battles. The Henderson brothers, husbands to his sister's Matilda and Jincy also fought for the Confederacy. I am trying to locate a Denise McDowell (a distant cousin), dau of John McDowell. John is deceased and I have been told that his wife is also deceased. However, John McDowell is still listed in the Fort Payne, Al phonebook. I believe that Denise married a Palmer and still lives in the Fort Payne area. Thank you Mel Schmidt Woodburn, Oregon

Is there a correct way to spell DeKalb? I have seen Dekalb, De Kalb, DeKalb etc. Does history give us the story of where they got the name and how it was spelled then, or does it matter? Merry Christmas Howard Ford
DeKalb is the accepted spelling of this name. The name DeKalb originates from Baron Johann De Kalb, the French army officer, who as it turns out, was neither French nor a Baron. The son of a German peasant, De Kalb left home at the age of sixteen to become a French soldier of fortune. There he found that only noblemen could become officers, so he gave himself the title of "baron". De Kalb was one of several foreign soldiers to offer their services gallantly in the Battle of Camden, S.C. on August 16, 1780 and died there after being wounded eleven times. He was the only general in the American Revolution to die on the battlefield, fighting next to the average foot soldier. Six counties in the United States are named for De Kalb, making it the third most popular name for counties in the nation. Happy Holidays to all.
Thanks to those of you who responded. Here is what I have, as of this particular minute :>) Eliza Jane Lee b. 25 Aug 1832 d. 11 Oct 1916 either De Kalb Co. Another name for her mother could've been Elizabeth surname unknown Allen Lee's father was William Lee b. 1777 in VA or NC and Ann Brock b. 1784 in NC. She died before 1831 in Limestone Co. AL; her father was James Brock. Allen's grandfather's name was also William, apparently; he brought his family to Pikeville, Bledsoe Co from VA, year unknown. William Lee (the son) died in 1836 in De Kalb Co. AL I have Allen's uncles, William's brothers--GreenBerry or Berry, Joseph, Vardamon, John, Andrew, and Spencer--but no definite sisters; possible Mirah/Myra and Emily. Several of these men went to Orange Co. IN c. 1820-1830. Found Vard and John in other counties in TN in other census info. Am still tracing their movements. Allen's children--that I know of--were all born in De Kalb Co. Contradicting info states Elizabeth was Eliza Jane's mother. Allen Lee is supposed to have married several times. I have Eliza Jane's children, or most of them. Her son, William Allen Blansit, was left with relatives when she moved to IN first, then to Greene and Taney Counties in MO. She married Clement C. Blansit in 1849, in De Kalb Co, I think. He died 11 Nov 1864. A source says she married Leander Dean in 1864. I don't know any of his family, except what I received from Tim. Can anyone verify a date of marriage for them? I also know nothing about Clement Blansit. New info received tonight says that he fell ill and died of typhoid from drinking bad water. Allen Lee was a Lieutenant of the Lookout Rangers, a part of the 1st TN and AL Independant Vidette Cavalry. Leander Dean was also in the 1st, Co. G. Thanks for your help. Any info on Leander Dean or Clement Blansit would be much appreciated. Vonda Sheets

Hello, All I'm researching Eliza Jane Lee Blansit Dean. Her first husband was Clement Clay Blansit, who died 11 Nov 1864. He was supposedly a Confederate soldier, although I've not been able to find his records yet. Eliza Jane married Leander Dean some time in 1864, by a chaplain of the Union Army in Jackson Co. AL. Would anyone happen to have a book of marriages and divorces at that time? Or know anything about the Blansits? Thank you, Vonda Sheets GWSVKW@compuserve.com

My greatgrandfather Lewis Van Croft was born Oct. 1859 on a homesite very near where Crossville, Al is now located. Official history has it that the name Crossville was given to this town by a man named James A. Copeland. It is said that the reason he chose this name was because that there were so many crossroads there(from THE DEKALB LEGEND) . Another popular story and one that's passed down in my family is that the town name, Crossville, is a derivation of "Croftville". It was said that the early village was named "Croftville", but, because Crossville was easier to pronounce, with time the village became Crossville. Does anyone have any information as to whether this is true or not? Has anyone else heard this?
