Warren Reunion We're anxiously awaiting your arrival To the last Reunion this century. The Warren, Demastus/Demasters, Saint, Clement, Quillin, Scott, and related families invite you to attend our annual family reunion on Saturday, May 15, 1999. We will meet at the West Point Community Center in Cullman County, Alabama. Turn left if traveling north at the caution light that is near mile marker 6 on Highway 157. The community center is located about three blocks away. We will start the gathering about 10:00 A.M. with lunch at noon. Bring a dish to share and something to drink. Desserts will be greatly appreciated. After lunch we will again have a time of devotion to give thanks for all we have been blessed with and remember our past by retelling our story to each other so the younger generations will continue this gathering. Again we ask all to bring any family letters, photos, Bibles, or other memorabilia to add to our large collection. Last year we added several new photos and copies will be available. A few copies of "Warren Family from England to Alabama" will be available. I am asking each of you who have access to a copy to take a little time and review the "Warren Family from England to Alabama" by looking for your name or family. If there is a mistake please note it and bring it to our attention. If you do not have your children and grandchildren in it please bring them written down with birthdays, marriage dates, husband or wife. We have a great family tree that can be traced back to 900 AD but in some cases it is weak without any knowledge of our recent kin. Come and meet your cousin Dr. William Lee Hill and possibly other Hill cousins from Texas, if schedules do not conflict. Also, get a photograph of g. grandfather George Washington Warren's mother, Mary Emily Adams Warren and sister Ellen Elda Warren Hill. These and other photos were sent to us from our Texas Hill cousins and will be on display. Please make a special effort to join us. I am sure you will be made to feel welcome, gain knowledge of your past, and have the best time you have had since our last reunion. Please pass this message on to other interested family members who are "offline". If you need any further information you may call or write to: James R. I am new to the list. I live in Northeast Oklahoma. Looking for the family of my gr grandmother. Her name was Mansafee Thunderbird or Thunderburgh b. 1840. Could someone do a lookup in the 1840 Index or Census for DeKalb Co. for a Thunderbird or Thunderburgh family. I found her (Mansafee Poole) "divorced" in the 1880 in Conway County census, with 3 sons. The 3 sons ended up in Muldrow, Sequoyah District I.T. around 1890. Two of them were married there. Mansafee may have remarried and the family moved on to Indian Territory. Hope someone can help. Thanks you so much. Sharolyn
This is an idea that some of you in DeKalb County might want to persue. This is a forwarded message that appeared on the Randolph -Clay site with Kim's permission I contacted Mr. Tom Turley at the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History regarding the loose records microfilming project for Alabama counties. The archives will be supplying boxes and file folders to the county (as long as their resources permit) and the Genealogical Society of Utah will underwrite the costs of filming. The archives will also supply a free copy of the microfilm to each county that participates. Labor for the project will be provided by unpaid volunteers in the counties. I indicated 6 counties in which I was specifically interested. Three of them were Randolph, Clay, and Talladega. Unfortunately Clay, Randolph, and Talladega counties have not yet indicated an interest in participating in the project. The probate officials in each county have to request to participate in this project. It appears from the list I received of participating counties that many of the historical societies are then coordinating the volunteer workers to assemble and index the records. Now that we know more about the Archives project, it might be a good idea to offer assistance to these counties if they would participate. Should they decide to participate in the microfilming effort, the probate officials would need to contact Mr. Tom Turley, Alabama Dept. of Archives and History, Government Records Division, 624 Washington Avenue, P.O. Box 300100, Montgomery, AL 36130-0100; phone: (334) 242-4452, ext. 234, or e-mail at this address: tturley@archives.state.al.us. I do not have names of the officials for these 3 counties, but I looked up addresses in my HandyBook for Genealogists. Others on the list may have names and more current addresses. Here is what I found: Clay County, Alabama Probate Judge Clay County Courthouse Ashland, AL 36251 Randolph Co. AL Probate Judge P.O. Box 328 Wedowee, AL 36278-0328 Talladega Co. AL Probate Judge P.O. Box 755 Talladega, AL 35160-0755 Just in case you need it, the address for the Clay Co. AL Historical Society is P.O. Box 997, Ashland, AL 36251. Membership dues are $15. Please be courteous in any correspondence, offer your time and assistance, monetary contributions, or whatever rather than critical commentary. Also, give the officials the benefit of the doubt as they may not even be aware of this new archives project. I will include a list of the participating counties. I do have the names and addresses of the contact people for each if you need it. Please e-mail me privately for that info as it is too long to type all of it here. The following names I am researching are: John Lusk b.abt 1790's, James Lusk (poss. son of John) born in Tenn. abt. 1810-20, and James Anthony Lusk( son of James) born Abt. 1836/37 in Headsprings, DeKalb Co., Alabama he married to Lucy Ann Smith, daughter of Wade Hampton Smith and Salvia (Sallie) Fryer. Salvia had a sister Nancy who married a Joseph Lusk, brother to my James Anthony Lusk. Joseph and Nancy had one daughter Mary Lusk, who married to John Bray, Jr. they lived at Trent, Georgia on Rt.#2. Also James Anthony Lusk had a cousin named Allen Lea or Lee who along with James Anthony Lusk, Joseph Lusk (bro. of James A.) the three served in the Civil War together. I have info. on that. Lucy Ann Smith, had sister Maria Smith who married a Thomas Crabtree and a sister Cornelia(Nellie?) Smith who married John Bray, Sr. father of the John Bray, Jr. I previously listed. Lucy Ann Smith also had a brother Dempsey Smith, who had two sons named James Smith and Whitman Smith...they lived at Smith's Gap near Henegar. Lucy Ann Smith had two other brothers named Matthew and Alexander Smith, of which either had any known desc. James Anthony Lusk's father James was born in Tenn. and is said to have served in the Seminole Wars as an Indian Scout under Gen. Andrew Jackson. In going through some old letters my husbands grandfather, John Findley Reece, wrote to his mother, father and family I found a letter (without the envelope - of course) written October 16, 1906. John was born in Greene County MO to David Crockett Reece and wife Rachael Rebecca Ruddick. After David's dad, Jesse Andrew Reece, died David and family moved back to Dekalb county Alabama. I believe this letter was written to David and Rachael (Ruddick) Reece. "Dear Father & Mother With pain mingle with sorrow that I send you the Few words Deth comin our Famly and tuck from us our middle Boy we cald him Reece We are all we as can and hope you the same Your as Ever R Y Whittenburg Stinson MO" Included in the stack of old letters were two clippings - no dates or anything. "ASLEEP IN JESUS Reece Whittenburg, son of R Y and M S Whittenburg, was born Oct 14, 1898 and died Oct 1, 1906, after an illness of only a few days. Little Reece was a bright, sweet child, and it was indeed sad to give him up, but our heavenly father knoweth best, and the Master was said, ' Of such is the kingdom of heaven;' therefore, parnets, sorrow not as those who have no hope, but feel that your little one has been taken from the earthly fold to the heavenly one, and while he cannot come back to you, you can go to him. May the blessings of God abide with the parents, brothers, and sisters, and some glad day may they meet their loved one in that 'house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens' M E S" and "Contributed in Memory Reece, son of Mr. and Mrs R Y Whittenburg near Stinson, died Sunday night a 1 o'clock age 8 years 11 months and 16 days. He had been afflicted with throat trouble for seven years caused by measles. He was bad only a week and during that time very thing possible was done. Monday evening we followed the remains to the Rays Springs cemetery where he was laid to rest. A father, mother, four brothers and five sisters are left to mourn. A touching scene was the grave decorated with flowers by Hattie Powell and the Wiseheart girls - A Neighbor." Maybe this can connect the Missouri Reeces with those from Tennessee and north Alabama. I am looking for a Padgett family with a daughter Martha born in Dekalb Co. in 1865 and a son George Archie Padgett born around 1872. The parents may have been Archie and Rachel Padgett, but that is uncertain. I have been unable to locate any info other than the above found on their death certificates. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jon
A book was published back in the 1970's which gave a history of most of the schools that had been in existence in Dekalb County. However, I'm not sure where one could find that book. I remember looking at the book when it came out. It had tons of photographs with student names, etc. I think it would be a great help to any one looking for this information. I think it was put together by the Dekalb retired teachers association. Maybe someone knows about how to get access to this book.
There are a number of resources in the DeKalb county Library in Fort Payne. Also, refer to "The heritage of DeKalb County, AL, Heritage Publishing Consultants, Inc., P.O. She also had a child with Oscar Little, he was supposed to be from the same general area. I cannot find any info out on him, thought maybe I could find someone who might still be living that remembers my grandmother and possible something on Oscar Little.
