Froggie, The names you mention do not sound familiar, but I do know that some of the Dearman people in DeKalb and Etowah Counties were known as McDeerman ca 1890s. Buster Doogan killed a McDeerman (I think John) on the top of Sand Mountain either in the 1890s or early 1900s. This is likely the original form of the name for many of the Dearman people. I will check my sources and let you know if there are others listed. Decoration at Lookout Chapel is on 4th Sunday in May(May 23, 1999). This "cemetery" is located in front of Ellis Cave(known commercially as Sequoyah Caverns).
I don't remember this Decoration being posted: Decoration at Lookout Chapel is on 4th Sunday in May(May 23, 1999). This cave is located in front of Ellis Cave(known commercially as Sequoyah Caverns). The land for this cemetery was donated by my g-greatgrandfather, James Painter, and he is buried there.
For those of you interested in this subject you might want to read an article in the March 1999 issue of the United Daughters of the Confederacy magazine. The article is titled Confederate Memorial Day and is on page 8,9 and 10. If anyone does not have access to this magazine and wants the article, I will copy it and mail it to you. Hi Betty - The courthouse has some old papers. I was over there today, & the earliest papers were from around 1921. I will be going back to the courthouse in a week or two. If you will email the names & death dates to me, I'll be more than happy to check the papers. > Hi Candy, Could you please check the book for me regarding any picture of the football team at Crossville ca. 1935, 1936 or 1937. I have been trying to find a picture of that football team for a long time as my father was on it. Or if there is a name index, my father's name is Hassel Heaton or it might be H. R. Heaton. Or I would be interested in any HEATON info in the book. Thank you for your time and any help. I was always told that "Memorial Day" was a Yankee holiday :) of honoring the dead and it was started after the Civil War. The Southerners started Decoration Day instead of using Memorial Day. This may very well be just another folktale. How about the old "Smith" Cemetery, near the northwest corner of the intersection of County Roads 610 and 85, and about two miles southeast of Kings Chapel (on County Road 119).
