Ariel Clark Wood, 49, owner of Wood's Taxi Service, died suddenly last Thursday, February 3, 1949, while fishing at Spring Creek of a medical problem. Mr. Wood was born Dec. 27, 1999 in Warehouse Point, Conn. He moved to North Carolina where he met his wife Ruby and later moved to Brewton, AL. Mr. Wood came to Foley several years ago from Brewton, Ala., and has since been in the taxicab business here. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruby Wood, two daughters, Barbara and Betsy, and two sons, Donald and James. Funeral services were held at Foley Mortuary February 5, 1949, at 3:00 PM, with burial in Breton, Ala. Rev. C. E. Avinger officiated at the services in Foley. Name appears in records as James Hammond or James Hammonds whenever written or printed by officer. However, the two examples of James' signature which appear on the record are James Hommons. 2. Enlisted by Capt. S.N. Ferguson at Pickensville, Ala on April 20, 1861. Period of enlistment was one year. 3. Was paid $11 per month. Pay days were from two to four months apart. 4. Was admitted at General Hospital, Petersburg, VA on Dec 4, 1863. He was ill with pneumonia. Returned to duty Feb 6, 1864. 5. Was captured by Union forces near Jonesboro, Ala on Aug 31, 1864. Was exchanged by order of Major General W.T.Sherman at Rough and Ready, GA on Sept 19 or 22, 1864. How sweetly her life passed into the new and blessed state of existence beyond the beautiful river(?). Her (?) ever without number. She was the faithful and lovong wife mist devoted mother. Precious Life. Amen ---Scottsboro, Ala. W. G. Montrose dead March the 19, 1901. He was a most loving and devoted father. may his cildren imitate his example and be pure holy Christians. Amen.
