He was active in Law Enforcement and Lodge Affiliation, having been Worshipful Master of Ionic Lodge 707, and was largely owing to his activities that the building now occupied by the Masons was bought as their home.It was his hearts work to see this building paid for and the lower story converted into a Community Center, and had he lived two years more we doubt not that he would have seen his object attained. Dick was born in Livingston, Alabama 37 years ago, and was educated in the Public Schools of Livingston and attended college at Auburn, Alabama. He was always loyal to his college and the work they were doing. Dick came to York with his Father G.C. Gowdey about 12 years ago and for several years had been one of th A.T.& N.'s most efficient employees. While Dick never took an active part in Church work he was always interested in the things that make good Church members, and while in his last sickness embraced Jesus Christ as his Saviour and we have no doubt he rests with Him in Glory. He leaves to mourn his loss his father, Mr. G.C. Gowdey, one brother, Mr. Frank Gowdey of Meridian Mississippi, one sister, Miss Maude Gowdey of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, wife, and three little boys, aa host of other relatives and friends by the score. His remains were tenderly laid to rest in the York Cemetary at 4:30 O'Clock Wednesday afternoon.Dr.Davidson officiating and at the grave side the Masons took charge, more than a hundred strong and as they closed the Ku Klux Klan marched around the grave and placed thereon a beautiful wreath. The floral offerings were beautiful and spoke for his popularity among his friends and associates. From: Sumter Co. Journal Sept., 28, 1923 Additional Comments: Submitted by Ann Gowdey Beck ,G.Daughter of R.C. Gowdey. Written ver batim ,as recorded in actual news clipping. from Jud Arrington of York AL. Mr. Gowdeys 3 little boys were George Gibson Gowdey, Thomas Francis Gowdey, and William Spratt Gowdey. Wife was Aileen (Smith) Gowdey.
