The courage and sagacity necessary to the inauguration of this enterprise may be more readily estimated when we reflect that its promoters had to deal with a variety of untoward circumstances, likely to arise out of the contingencies of threatened adverse state and national legislation. In considering the practicability of a municipal corporation at Elyton, it was essential to probe, as far as possible, these problems with reference alike to their influence upon its ultimate success, and the prejudice of local jealousies, most likely to be incited in a new country, which divides its golden promises between the business foresight of the legitimate settler and benefactor, and the speculations of the adventurous “land shark.” To contend with the vicissitudes of such a situation, no man could have been found better fitted than he, who came to the management of the enterprise in 1875, perhaps the most momentous period in the history of the company; and the manner in which he has discharged the burdensome duties of his position amply attend the wisdom of his choice. When he took charge, it was without a salary, but he was voted a salary, which has been annually increased without demand. It is said that had he received, from the company, the usual commissions of real estate dealers, he would, on several occasions, have realized the neat sum of $50,00 a month. Dr. Caldwell is a native of Greenville, Butler county, Ala., where he was born in 1836. He spent his youth, and received his early education there, but afterward attended and graduated from the medical department of the university of Pennsylvania. He practiced his profession at home until the opening of the war, when he entered the medical department of the Confederate army, serving principally in the field with the Alabama forces. He has large private interests in and near Birmingham, being president of the Caldwell Hotel company, a director of the First National bank of Birmingham, of the Williamson Iron company, and of the Birmingham Iron works. Mrs. Caldwell’s maiden name was Milner, a sister of Maj. W. J. Milner of Birmingham, Ala. John Caldwell, the father of the doctor, was a native of North Carolina, and his mother, Elizabeth Black, a native of South Carolina. His father died in 1870, and his mother in 1871. Dr. Caldwell is a Mason, and he and wife are members of the First Presbyterian church. Additional Comments: Henry's wife, Elizabeth, was born in Georgia about 1841 per the 1860 Census, Butler Co., AL. Also with them in 1860 were his mother, Elizabeth (E. M.), age 60, F. C. Milner, a female, age 22, born in AL, and H. W. Milner, age 2, born in AL. They were still in Greenville, Butler Co., AL for the 1870 US Census. With Henry and Lizzie were Mary, age 9, Charles, age 6, John, age 1, and Mary Milner, age 57, born in Georgia. The children were born in AL. By 1880 they had moved to Birmingham and with them there were Beattrace (Mary?), age 19, Charles H., age 16, John M., age 11, Pauline E, age 7, Willie M., age 4, (a male), Nealy A. W. Millner, age 67 mother-in-law, plus servants. Henry is buried in the Oakhill Cemetery, Birmingham. He was buried Aug 9, 1895. His wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" was buried there August 21, 1894. But since the photo is undated, the co-owner could have been John Franklin Day, Jr (20 AUG 1859, Clarke Co, AL - APR 1928, Brownwood, TX). J B Day, the other co-owner, is unidentified -- but if the photo is early enough he could have been John Franklin Day, Sr's son John Benjamin Day (12 NOV 1844, Clarke Co, AL - 10 SEP 1863). Additional Comments: Family tradition claims the store was operated by John Franklin Day, Sr, in the 1870s. He was listed in the 1880 census of Clarke Co. as a 'huckster' -- evidence of his proprietorship of the store. She was married to JAMES E. BLACKWELL, January 19, 1854, professed religion in 1856, and joined the M. E. Church South the same year. Since then she has lived a model Christian. She told her husband when he started to the late war that she would pray for him twice a day for him until he returned, and when he came back from the war she told him she had kept her promise. She was the mother of seven children, all of whom except one have professed religion and are now members of the Methodist Church. She requested her husband, the night before her death, to tell all of her children that if she never saw them again on earth she would meet them at the pearly gates of heaven. She said there was not a shadow intervening between her and her Savior, and if it was God’s will she had rather go than stay here and suffer as she had suffered for ten or twelve years. Sister BLACKWELL was a good woman -–oved by all who knew her. I preached the last sermon that she heard on earth on Sunday afternoon at Free Hope Church. Wednesday following, a large congregation of weeping relatives and friends met at Walnut Grove Cemetery to pay the last tribute of respect to the remains of our departed sister. She ahs gone from us, but we mourn not as those who have no hope. She can not come back to us, but we can go to her. May God bless the grief stricken ones, and my they all meet her in heaven. F. V. MARY H. MILLER, wife of Dr. D. R. MILLER, was born in Pickens County, Ala, and died at Festus, Missouri, May 22nd, 1886. We pronounce no fulsome eulogium when we say that the world is better for her having lived in it, and Heaven has gained by her departure from the Shores of Time. None knew her but to love her, if their love was worth the winning, none named her but to praise. In every relation of life she was all or ampler to that religion which she professed and adorned. Zealously devoted to the interests of the Presbyterian Church, of which branch of Christian she was a member, she ----the cardinal fact that Christ is sovereign-----. Acting upon this belief, she did good to all as she had opportunity. And from the eyes of many “frequent falls the grateful dew for eneifits (sic) the world ne’er knew.” All who came within her precincts felt as fi they were in an atmosphere redolent of purity, gentleness, goodness, and holiness. Tho’ the silver cord has been loosed, the golden bowl broken, her sainted spirit taken its flight to realms of everlasting lights trough the hands that dispensed kindly charities and the tongue that spoke sweet words of cheer and comfort to the disconsolate, lie palsied in the iron embrace of death. Though dead, she yet liveth, for “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” When the last summons came, she was found ready and waiting. The intense torture to which she was subjected from the cancerous affection with which she was afflicted, elicited no murmur of discontent. “The dress only would be consumed, the gold would be refined.” She knew in whom she trusted – the “physician of the Soul. The Valley of the “dark shadows” had for her no terrors. There was a “light in the Valley.” Underneath her were the Everlasting Arms.” In mingling our tears with the tears of those near and dear to the departed, we would say: We sorrow not as those without hope. Our loss is her gain. “The righteous hath hope in his death.” If we live aright here, it will be well with us in the --- “long hereafter.” If we hurt--- her life we shall meet her --- in the “Sweet By and By.” He husband, children, friends, which time unveils eternity, "At the beautiful gate she will be waiting and watching for thee.” And “Oh, How sweet to think, hereafter, When the spirit leaves this sphere. Love, with deathless wing, shall waft her To those she long hath mourned for here. Hearts from which was death to sever Even this world can ne’er restore, There, as warm, as bright as ever, Shall meet us to be lost no more.” Then, weep not for the silent dead Their toils are past, their sorrow o’er, And those they loved their steps shall tread And death shall join in part no more.
