Wednesday, April 15, 1885 Page Three Local Intelligence Miss Hattie McDonald died at the residence of her mother, near Post Oak church last Sunday night. The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday, April 22, 1885 Page Three In Memoriam McDonald – Miss Hattie McDonald, daughter of John and Mary McDonald, was born near Post Oak church, Dale County, Ala., April 14, 1848; and died at the home where she was born, April 12, 1885, aged thirty-seven years and one day. From childhood to womanhood her health was delicate; yet she was always tender and sweet-spirited. Her character was pure and solid. In her childhood she was religiously inclined. During her fifteenth year she made profession of faith in Christ and joined the Methodist E. Church, South at Post Oak and lived in its fellowship until called to the “church above.” Hattie was a devoted daughter, affectionate sister and loving friend. These bright qualities of mind and heart were intensified by the death of her noble father in her tender childhood, and the fostering care of a mother whose love was increased in richness and fullness by the many sorrows she endured in losing loved ones. She lost a good son in the late war. During her sickness Miss Hattie realized bright manifestations of God’s tender mercy. The night before she died she became so happy that she shouted, “I have a home in glory. My home is over Jordan. Hallelujah, hallelujah. I am ready, willing and waiting.” She gave directions about dressing her for burial. Gently she passed from earth to heaven at half-past 8 o’clock Sunday night, April 12, and was buried at Post Oak, Monday evening near her father and sister Margaret, to await the resurrection of the dead. Wednesday, April 8, 1885 Page Three Local Intelligence We are pained to announce the death of Mrs. Grimmer, wife of our esteemed fellow citizen, Erasmus M. Grimmer, which sad event occurred at the home of her husband in the northern part of the county on Friday morning last, after an illness of several months duration of that dread disease consumption. To friend Grimmer and his greatly afflicted little ones we tender sympathy. The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday, April 15, 1885 Page Three Roeton, Ala., April 12,1885 Mrs. E.M. Grimmer, also died Friday morning the 3rd inst., was buried the 4th in the cemetery at Mt. Paron. She left ten children, the oldest of which was only fourteen years of age and eight of them are under ten years of age. Five of them are her own children and five are the children of Mr. Grimmer’s two previous companions. We can only say to the bereaved husband and little ones, follow in the footprints of her, who was always a loving wife, devoted mother; every striving to banish all trouble and to make home happy. To the numerous relatives and friends, I would say, let us endeavor to help them bear their grief, and encourage them to always tend toward that land of bliss, where she now rests and waits their arrival. She is now in that peaceful home of which she spoke before she went away. She wished for the time to come when she would be freed from the troubles and afflictions of this world, and said she was prepared and ready to go. Truly she is gone where consumption cannot go. Wednesday, April 1, 1885 Page Three In Memoriam Stokes – Died at the residence of J.W. Stokes in Haw Ridge, his mother, Mrs. Stokes of heart disease, about 12 p.m. March 20th. She was the widow of Isaiah Stokes, late of Coffee County. She was about sixty-fives of age, a member of the M.E. Church, South, and a good Christian woman. She was a tender and loving mother and grandmother; was noted for her industry and economy, “was a keeper at home.” Also noted for her kindness and attention to the sick and suffering of her neighborhood. She gave herself in ministries of kindness to her own children and others, which service perhaps, hastened her death. She possessed a sympathizing heart and helping hand. Doubtless she was ready for the summons of death though it came at midnight. She suffered but a short while dying. She was soon gone. Said to her son, “I am gone,” and was dead. She was buried in the graveyard at Haw Ridge at 1 p.m. Sunday the 22d, ult., Rev. Angus Dowling conducting the service. Her burial was attended by all her living children, but one son, and many other relatives and friends. It was a time of tears and sobs, and yet a time of bright hope of the future reunion in our eternal home. P. Wednesday, March 25, 1885 Page Three In Memoriam To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren of Ozark Lodge, No. 349. F.A.M.: Brother Jesse Johnson was born October 28, 1851 and departed this life on the 20th day of January 1885. He was born and lived all his life in this county, where by an incomprehensible fatality he came to his down death by the accidental discharge of his own gun in his own hands. Why it was that the good Lord permitted this fatal accident is a question doubtless suggested by the mind of everyone, but the answer is not yet. That He, without whose knowledge not even a sparrow falls, knew of it and permitted it, no one can doubt; yet the reason for it is hidden from us by that wisdom which permits no man to see into the future, and stretches a veil between finite and infinite minds, allowing no community of thought. What our brother would have been in the future but for his untimely demise, is a question which can be answered alone by the fond conjecture of those who loved him. That he would have been a quiet, unobtrusive and useful citizen, none who knew him can for a moment doubt. The qualities of modesty and gentility were prominent features in his character. Retiring in his disposition, he found ample employment in attending to his own business, and hence it was that he gave offense to no one, and was universally liked by all who knew him. But the quiet and unpretending young man has gone from our midst, and left in every heart a throb of sadness at his going. His earthly ties have been severed, and to-day he rests beyond the shadows which close around the tomb. May he rest in peace. Resolved, That this memorial be published in the Southern Star, and a certified copy in writing, under the seal of the Lodge, be furnished to the mother of the deceased. Stephen D. Wednesday, March 18, 1885 Page Three In Memoriam Jackson – Died, at the residence of Mr. Kinyon Strickland, on the morning of March 8, 1885, Mr. Alex T. Jackson. Indeed, a good man has gone. May his past conduct serve as a guide to the living and his manly traits be perpetuated by the youth with whom he was associated. He had no relatives in this country, but his death will send sorry to many hearts. He was a model young man, and loved by all who knew him. I feel satisfied that he is now basking in the beams of endless sunshine. In the language of another, “Alas! We cannot lengthen the tiny thread on which our mortal existence hangs.” “Ah! Am I born to die, To lay this body down, And must my trembling spirit fly Into a world unknown.” “How careful then ought I to be who such a strict account must give of my behavior here.” Tis hard to part with those we love, but we reverently bow to the decrees of Him who doeth all things well. Wednesday, March 4, 1885 Page Third In Memoriam In sadness we announce the death of Mrs. Fannie Stokes, wife of Mr. J.W. Stokes, of Haw Ridge, and daughter of Mr. H.H. Mizell. This mournful event transpired at her home, 3 p.m. Friday, 20th ult. Although she had been suffering for some months and her death seemed inevitable, yet when it came to pass many hearts were filled with sorrow and many eyes filled with tears. However, it affords relief from the bitterness of grief to know that she was so well prepared to meet the grim monster Death. She really died shouting victory over death and hell. Her last words were in praising and glorifying God her Savior. Her pure and sweet life gave assurance of triumph in death. She was pure in childhood, lovely in womanhood, a faithful Christian, a true member of the M.E. Church South, an affectionate daughter and sister, and a devoted wife and mother. She was buried in Haw Ridge graveyard Sunday morning, February 22, the Rev. Angus Dowling conducting the solemn and tearful service. A large assembly of weeping relatives and friends were present. Wednesday, December 31, 1884 Page Three Mrs. Hill, the aged widow of the late Sion L. Hill, of this county, died at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Q.C. Hunter, of this place, on the night of the 25th inst., and was buried by the side of her late husband on the morning of the 27th. Truly a mother in Israel has passed over the river to bask in the sunshine of eternal bliss beyond. She leaves many relatives and friends to mourn her departure. We hope that some friend who wields an abler pen than ours, will furnish us with a suitable obituary for publication in the STAR.
