Wednesday, January 18, 1888 Page Three We regret to learn of the death of Mr. John P. Campbell, son of Mr. J.A.F. Campbell, a former citizen of this county, but for many years a resident of Texas, which sad event occurred at his fathers home the first of the month. He has many relatives and friends in this county who will regret to learn of his untimely death. We have a very extended notice of his life and death, which will appear in our next issue. The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday, January 25, 1888 Page Three Obituary Cut Down in the Bloom of Manhood J.P. Campbell, the subject of this sketch was the youngest of a family of seven brothers and four sisters; a son of Jno. A.F. and Emily Campbell, (who is well known to the people of Dale Co.) Johnny was born near Asbury church in Dale County, Ala., June 30th, 1867, and died at his fathers residence six miles south of Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, Jan. 3rd, 1888, at 11:30 oclock, a.m. at the age of 20 years, 6 months and 3 days. When Johnny was about 9 years old his father moved to Texas, stopping one year in Frustone county, and then moved to and settled in this county. Johnny was baptized in infancy and in his boyhood days connected himself with the M.E. Church South at Asbury. Though he was a member of the church he was not thoroughly satisfied spiritually and while attending the annual camp meeting at Grape Creek in August 1886, conducted by Revs. Andrew Davis Pastor, Henry Metcalf and others he was deeply convicted, and at grove meeting that evening he resolved that he would never return to the arbor until God had blessed his soul. This resolution was not in vain, for by the pleading and faithful earnest prayers of two brothers and a few friends he gave everything worldly up, and was made shouting happy in the love of God. From the day of his new birth until he died he lived a consistent Christian life. Early in the morning of his death he was heard singing softly that sweet old hymn, Jesus lover of my soul, but the only words discernable was as he closed, Leave, oh! leave me not alone. He seemed to realize two days before his death that he must go, and on being asked about his future happiness his reply was, I have no fear all is well I am willing to go. He was taken sick Dec. 27, 1887 with Catarrhal fever, terminating in Pneumonia, and in six days despite all that the Physician and loving hands could do, God called him to rest. He died rational and in the fullest triumph of a Christian faith. So passed away one of the noblest and purest young men of our home and church. As a son he was obedient and ever ready to do his parents bidding. As a brother he was kind and loving and being the youngest of the family was the idol of the entire connection. As a proof that all who knew him, knew him only to love him was demonstrated by the assemblage of the largest concourse of people every gathered at Grape Creek cemetery to witness the interment of him they had known and loved. He leaves a father, mother, brothers, sisters, many relatives and friends to mourn his early demise. His pastor, the Rev. Mr. Kizzar preached the funeral oration. W.C. Dale-Coffee County AlArchives Marriages.....Beard, Emma - Carmichael, J.M. December 1885 ************************************************ Copyright. Wednesday, December 23, 1885 Page Three Married Carmichael Beard On last night Hon. J.M. Carmichael of Ozark, took unto himself for a wife, Miss Emma Beard, one of Coffees fairest flowers. To say they just suit, is but a mild expression on our part to convey our idea of their happy union. The groom is a leading citizen of the State, whose reputation as a lawyer and gentleman is not limited to the confines of our common wealth. He has held various prominent offices in our State; and no doubt be our next Circuit Judge. His political life has been a continuous success, showing the hold he has on the hearts of his countrymen. His life as a private citizen shines with no less luster. Miss Emma, his bride, is one of the most charming ladies we ever knew. Her personal attractions have captured one of the most prominent men of the State, and led him captive to her will. In her Mr. Carmichael will find a wife whose heart pulsates with noble feeling and whose affections he might well be proud. Her many good deeds and her kind actions have won her numbers of friends who with great regret give her the parting hand to go with the one whom she has given her heart. Miss Emma has gone, who will we find to fill her place? No one. A vacuum has been created that can be filled by no one. In this marriage we must say Coffee and Dale are more closely united. We feel proud to thus strengthen our relationship with the grand old county of Dale. Several intimate friends witnessed their marriage. As fine supper as we ever saw, and indeed the occasion was a very enjoyable one. The couple left this morning for Ozark followed by many good wishes. They were accompanied by S.N. Rowe, with Miss Ella Law, and H.L. Martin, with Miss Maud Roberts. A delightful time awaits the happy crowd at Ozark. We wish the couple ever pleasure in life and that an unusual happy future awaits their steps in life. Wednesday, August 5, 1885 Page One From Haw Ridge Miss Minerva Head has returned from a trip up in Pike in the interest of a new cutting chart for dressmaking. This new method is her own patent and invention. We know of its merits only through the praise bestowed upon its simplicity and correctness by the ladies who are generally good judges of such things. Miss Head is one of the most thorough business ladies of our country and deserves great credit for the excellent manner in which she has managed the family affairs committed to her charge by the death of her parents several years ago. She has certainly demonstrated that where there is a will there is a way, and that way she has found in the success she has attained. The country does and should feel proud of Miss Head and why not? Where will you find another instance of a girl in her teens taking the place of a father and mother to her little brothers and sisters, managing the farm and family affairs, keeping the family together making an honest living, and money over and above. I know of no other instance in my life. It does also demonstrate that woman has a mission in the world and that she is not the helpless creature of circumstance that she generally thinks herself to be.
