A. Clisby, the well-to-do capitalist and physician of Birmingham, was born September 29, 1848, in Coosa county, Ala., and was educated in the schools of that and Montgomery county. He studied pharmacy after leaving school, in South Carolina, whither he had gone at the age of eighteen years, locating in Edgefield. He went into the drug business there, and remained with good success in that business about eleven years. He was married in Edgefield in 1875, to Fannie T. Glover, and to them were born five children, as follows: Warner C., Fannie L., Alfred A., Kathleen, and John H. The mother of these children died in 1888. In 1882, Dr. Clisby removed to Birmingham, and engaged in the drug business one year, which he abandoned for real estate, his present occupation. He married the second time, November 19, 1891, Daisy, daughter of Gen. T. K. Irwin, of Mobile. He was one of the promoters and organizers of the East Lake Land company, and one of its vice-presidents, and during his residence in Edgefield, S.C., was m ayor of that city several years. His father was John Clisby, born in Boston, Mass., in 1813. He came to Alabama in 1826, and located in Montgomery, where he was an extensive merchant until 1887. He commanded a company of Montgomery troops in the Seminole war. He was married in 1839 to Emily Hughes, a daughter of John Hughes. Eleven children were born to the union, the following ten of whom grew to maturity: John H., now a leading citizen of Montgomery, Ala.; George C., who served through the last war, was wounded five times, and last at Gettysburg; Emma, wife of C. L. B. Marsh, of Birmingham; Elizabeth, wife of J. M. Cobb, of Edgefield, S.C; Dr. A. A. Clisby, of Birmingham; Steven H. Clisby, killed at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, at the age of seventeen years; Rosa, wife of Col. S. W. John, of Birmingham; Lorenzo, of Birmingham; Hattie, wife of John Morris, of Birmingham, and Annie. Additional Comments: Alfred A. Clisby was buried in the Oakhill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County,. In the same cemetery are his sister Annie M. Clisby, Hattie Clisby Morris, and mother, Emily D. Clisby. Emily D. was the daughter of John & Elizabeth Hughes, born about 1823. She married first Benjamin Hill on January 16, 1838 in Montgomery County, Alabama. Benjamin died between February 6, 1838 when he wrote his will and February 12, 1838 when his will was proved in court. Emily remarried February 4, 1839 to John Clisby in Montgomery County, Alabama. From the 1850 and 1860 Coosa County, Alabama census, the 1870 Elmore County, Alabama census and the 1880 Chilton County census records, their eleven children, all born in Alabama, are as follows: John H. Clisby, b. abt 1840 George C. Clisby, b. abt 1842 Freling, b. abt. 1844 (a son, d. before the 1860 census) Stephen H., b. abt. 1846 Alfred A, b. Sep 29, 1848 Emma, b. abt 1852 Elizabeth, b. about 1855 Lorenza, b. abt 1857 Rosa M., b. abt 1859 Hattie, b. abt 1861 (died Jun 1907) Annie M., b. abt. 1865 (died Oct 1953) In the 1880 US Census, Edgefield County, SC, Alfred is there with his wife, Fannie, and first son, Warner C., born 1878 in Edgefield Co., SC. Fannie is in the Dr. A. A. Clisby plot in Oakhill Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. She was 29 years old and was buried Jan. 20, 1889. Warner is in his own plot (died August 1956) with wife Lila Gaines. The 1900 Census, Jefferson County, Alabama, shows Alfred has been married for 9 years to Daisy who was born in December 1868 in Alabama and that they have two children together: Irwin P., b. September 1893 and Charles K., born September 1897. Also living with them are his children with Fannie: Warner C., b. June 1878; Fannie L., b. June 1881; Alfred L., b. August 1883; and Kathleen, b. February 1886. John H., named as a son to Alfred and Fannie in this biography, is not listed in either 1880 or 1900 census records.
