Sister Martin was born near Salem in Russell county, now Lee county, Alabama, on March 10, 1839. She joined the church in 1854 under the pastorate of Rev. John Cowert of the Alabama Methodist Protestant Conference and in the church of her choice she lived consistently until the day of her death. In the life of Sister Martin we have a character of genuine Christian integrity, possessed of that coveted, cheerful, uncomplaining nature so rare among those of her station. Sister Martin was married to Marcellas Newton Martin in girlhood, whom she survived ten years. To this union was born eleven children. All, with the exception of one, still live to mourn the loss of mother. At the time of her death she was stopping with her youngest son and daughter, Grover Martin and Mrs. Fannie Askew of Newnan, Ga. She was confined to her bed only a short time. She bore her sufferings patiently and trustingly, submitting herself confidently to the will of the Lord. When the final end came, one breath, deep and long, and the tired spirit rested forever, "safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast." By request, she was brought home to the chursh she loved so well and the famiy burying ground at Hopewell, Lee circuit, and peacefully laid beside her husband, to await the second coming of her Lord. Thus was buried one among three of the oldest of Hopewell's members. Mrs. F. I felt that since he was in th timber business following the war that he may have done something related to that. I felt there must be some kind of paperwork indicating something--even if he paid someone to serve on his behalf. I would appreciate any help you are able to provide on him or his father, Emanuel Bruton/Brewton, born 1801 in georgia. Emanuel last shows up in the 1840 census and has a child born around 1847. I feel it's possible he served in the Mexican or some military conflict prior to 1850. Hope you can find something to help. David was born August 28, 1878 in Butts Co. GA. He was the first child of Thurmon Beamon and Martha Jane(Evans)Maddox who married there in Dec. 1877. Shortly after the 1880 census was taken, his parents migrated to Marshall Co. AL. The 1900 Marshall Co. census listed his father, step-mother, and siblings in the 12th precinct, Oleander. David Maddox(age- 22)was shown as a "servant" in the household of Ira B. Luther in Albertville. Izillida(?)Dendy, age-15, was listed with her parents, James and Margaret Dendy, in Albertville.[a later census indicated Zillie's middle initial as "P"]. David and "Zillie" likely married in Albertville c. 1904. On the 1910 census the couple was listed in Oleander-12th precinct, with their son, Audie L.-age 3. They perhaps resided in his father's former home, as Beamon Maddox(twice widowed)had returned to ButtS Co. GA. On the 1920 census, David and Zillie were found in adjacent Morgan Co. in the Lawrence Cove precinct, with son Audy L.-13 and daughter Pearl-9(?). In 1930 the family is shown in the 17th precinct of Morgan Co.-near Eva, along the Cullman Co. line, with son Beamon-age 9. For more on the Maddox family see Marshall Co. AL, and Butts Co. GA entries. Larry C. Knowles--August 1, 2006 Additional Comments: The origin of these photos is unknown. Mrs. Betty D. Gudat, San Antonio, TX, who funished many photos on the Maddox family, received these captioned prints from a John Carter, whose Email address is no longer operative! This undated portrait of Martha Jane(Evans)and Thurmon Beamon Maddox obviously dates from early in their marriage. Beamon Maddox, youngest son of David and Rebecca(Hunt?)Maddox, married Martha Jane Evans, eldest daughter of James Marion and Frances(Willard)Evans, in Butts Co. GA on December 19, 1877. Their first child, David Carlton Maddox was born there August 28, 1878. Shortly after the 1880 census, the couple moved to Marshall Co. AL, where their second son, Monroe Dolphus Maddox, was born near Guntersville March 6, 1881. Five more children, three girls and two boys, were added before Martha’s death May 23, 1893. On February 3, 1895, “Turmon Beaman” Maddox married Martha’s sister, “Sara Frances” Evans(spellings from their marriage certificate)in adjacent Dekalb Co. AL, where the James Evans family had settled. The Maddox family was listed on the 1900 Marshall Co. census, near Oleander, AL-in the 12th district. For more Maddox family details, see other photos, and the summary for the great family photo(c.1899)on this site Larry C. Knowles--July 30, 2006 Additional Comments: David Carlton Maddox moved into Morgan Co. AL(west of Marshall Co.) Brothers, Monroe Dolphus & William Homer Maddox, moved to Travis Co. Texas, near sister, Frances Rebecca, who had married William Noah Daniel in Marshall Co., AL in 1903. Look for additional information in these areas. W. Dean Died in Birmingham Hospital -- Mrs. Nell Dean, wife of Otho W. Dean, of this city, died at the Baptist Hospital in Birmingham Saturday at 10:25 a.m., after a few days violent illness caused from blood poisoning. She was carried to the hospital soon after the serious nature of her trouble was discovered, and the best medical skill co-operated with her relatives and friends in a vigorous and persisted fight to save her life, but all efforts failed. Her remains were carried to her old home, Reform, where an impressive funeral service, conducted by her pastor, Rev. F. J. Fleming, assisted by Rev. Foster Mills, was held Sunday afternoon. The interment was in the Reform cemetery. Mrs. Dean was 23 years of age last July. She was married to Mr. Dean June 16, 1927. Her father died while she was quite young, but her mother, Mrs. A. L. Rowe, of Reform survives her. During the last three years Mrs. Dean had been a member of the Clay County High School faculty in which capacity she rendered efficient service. She was just beginning her fourth year's work and, as assistant to the principal, she was filling well an important and responsible place. She was universally esteemed for her many excellent qualities of mind and heart. Besides her devoted husband, quite a number of relatives and friends were with her during her distressing illness and a large group of friends from here attended the funeral, thus paying a deserved tribute of esteem.
