Clifton, late of Co. H, 48th Alabama Regiment, C.S.A., died Feb. 4th, 1909. Age 73 years. "He lay like a soldier taking his rest, On the banks of the beautiful river, Where his comrades are lying in peace at last To be parted again. Oh never. Comrade Clifton entered the service of his country with Capt. Clair-7th. Alabama Regiment in April 1861. After his enlistment of 12 months expired he immediately re-entered the service by enlisting with C. H, 48th Alabama. He was soon made orderly Sargeant, then 3rd Lieutenant, then 2nd Lieutenant and before the war closed, by force of merit, he became 1st Lieutenant and was filling this honorable position with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his superior officers and the delight of his men when peace was made. He was sturdy, brave and true. Never faltered nor flinched from the many dangerous positions that confronted him, but was never forgetful of the interests of those under him. After a big day's march and most of the officers were soundly sleeping Frank Clifton could be seen going amongst his men to know all was well. His solicitude was that like that of a mother careing for her children. He was a quiet, unassuming Christian citizen, true to his convictions and loyal to his camp. Respectfully submitted, Z.T. Lawrence, J.M. Reed, Committee on memoriam. Camp John Pelham 411 U.C.V. Additional Comments: I have the orginal obit and have transcibed it exactly as written excepting any typos. Cherokee County AlArchives Obituaries.....Reed, Alice Bogan March 11, 1881 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Richard Reed Fleming [email protected] March 8, 2006, 12:14 pm Cherokee Co Newspaper On the 11th day of March, 1881, Alice A. wife of Joseph M. Reed and daughter of H.S. Bogan, Esq, departed this life. Aged 28 years, 6 months and 7 days. About six years ago Alice professed a hope of future reward, and to the day of her death she preserved an unflinching faith in the blessed Redeemer. She was truly a consistent, zealous and earnest Christian lady. Appeals for charity she did not ignore, To the extent of her purse she fed the poor. Loud and long have been the howls of puleing sycophants when drawing a picture of departed ones. Exagerations base, false and diabolical, have been knowingly uttered for the purpose of creating popularity, etc, but no such notions can be charged to any one who would dare to speak the truth about the subject of this sketch. She was a good, pure unsophisticated woman. One who sought not to deceive, but acted her religion in everyday life. A little more than one year ago she was happily married to Joseph M. Reed and her cup of bliss was brimful, but alas! the pale reaper came and severed her from those she loved. The suffering she endured during her illness was terrible, but she bore them all with Christian fortitude. Drs G D W Lawrence, A.M. McWhorter, J.W. Farill and J.A. Hall exerted every effort in their power to save the poor suffering lady but in vain. Mrs Wilkenson, Mrs Watt, Mrs Sewell and Mrs Dearman and in fact all her neighbors donated their skill and gave their presence to the sick bed often, to which service the writer is authorized by the sorrowing husband to say "thank you ladies, and may God in his mercy spare you from a kindred affliction" Many times during her illness she expressed sorrow that her husband did not belong to the church, and said if such was the case she would be ready to die. This thought seemed to be the one on which she formed a regret to quit this life, and should be uppermost in the desire of the afflicted husband, so that "bye and bye" another happy meeting may be possible in the "coming day." May God bless and protect those who Alice loved. Z.T.L. Sterling, Ala, May 27th, 1881 Additional Comments: I have the original obituary and have transcibed it exactly as printed. The name of the newspaper is not with the obit. Z.T.L. is Zachary Taylor Lawrence. I do not know the nature of her illness. She is buried at Cedar Bluff Cemetary in an unmarked grave next to Joseph Reed and his three other wives.
