Sharon in CT and Mr . Harrell in Baltimore I am a descendant of Harrells of Dallas County, AL. While driving through the area about twenty years ago I stopped at Harrell (formerly Harrell Cross-roads) and was told that there were no white Harrells remaining in the area. I still have a ticket for Fortune's Ferry which my great grandfather operated at or near where US 80 crosses the Cahaba River. My Harrrell ancestors were Gabriel Holmes HARRELL (b 1778 Bertie County, NC, m Frances HARRELL 1798, moved family and slaves to Dallas County about 1818, d 1829), Hardiman Israel HARRELL (b 1809, m Nancy Prince FORT 1828, d Benton County, FL 1850), Elias Fort HARRELL (b 1831 Dallas Co, m Henrietta Frances WATT Oktibbeha Co, MS 1858, operated Fortune's Ferry and was in retail business in Dallas Co, later in Shelby, d 1895 Shelby Co AL), Tennessee HARRELL (b 1866 Dallas Co, m William Gibson HAYES Dallas Co 1888, d 1940 Meridian, MS). I know there were several presumably unrelated Harrell families in Dallas County as well as the other sons and grandsons of Gabriel H. Harrell. I have been unable to establish Gabriel's parentage although family tradition states that he and Frances ("Fanny") were cousins. Her lineage we can document back about three generations in NC. I am interested in the family connections and the history of the family and area (both good and bad from our present perspective). Such information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - William G.
