I have a letter dated October 25, 1848 to my ggg-grandfather, Atlas Jones Martin, from his father, John Bethune Martin. At that time, Atlas Jones Martin was a school teacher living in Liberty Hill, Alabama. I believe that to be a "beat" of Dallas County. I don't know if a "beat" is like a "ward" on a census. I think there might have been a town, now dead, in Dallas County named Athens and Liberty Hill might have been in or around that area of Dallas County. The letter also mentions a Dr. Marsh and Lady who lived nearby. Atlas Jones Martin later lived at Martin Station, Alabama, also in Dallas County. His land was about 23 miles out of Selma, between what are now Orville and Safford. He married Harriett (or Harriott) Elizabeth Shields (widow of a Mr. Smith), farmed, was a grocer and raised his children all at Martin Station. Does anyone have any inforamtion on Liberty Hill or Atlas Jones Martin? Thanks so much! Fredreica
