    1. Re: [ALDALLAS-L] Bishop James Osgood Andrew, Summerfield
    2. Re Bishop James Osgood Andrew: There is a census listing for Bishop Andrew in Dallas County for 1860. He was associated with the Centenary Institute in Summerfield, as well as serving as one of the bishops in the "southern" Methodist Church (Methodist Episcopal Church, South). At that time, Summerfield was a leading educational community in Alabama. Interestingly, the Methodists "split" over slavery issues in 1844, specifically because of the slaves owned by Bishop Andrew and his wife, or particularly those slaves owned by his wife. The schism in the Methodist ranks was not healed until 1939, when the two branches of the church reunited as The Methodist Church. (Since then, the church has become the United Methodist Church.) There is more interestintg information on Bishop Andrew in Summerfield if you are interested. Bob Parrott, Knoxville.
