I am researching my mother's maternal family line of Avant. My great-great grandfather was William J. Avant. He was the son of John C. Avant born to Francis Avant & Elizabeth Case (John Case's dtr). They were originally from Marion County, South Carolina. All 5 children of Francis & Elizabeth were born in SC. They were Catherine M. Avant b.1810 and married David Dickerson Dumas; Mary Avant b.1814 married James Downes; Nancy Ann Avant b.1815 and married John G. O'Neal; Lucy T. Avant b.1818 married William H. Hall; Nathan Thomas Avant. b 1820 married Theodocia Wilson of Perry County and John C. Avant b. 1822 married Nancy D. Meredith. All of these children married in or around Dallas County, AL. It is unclear when Francis Avant (their father) died. His last record is in 1820 in the Marion County SC census. Next we find his widow remarried to a Charles Leopard ca. 1828 and she has a guardian named for her minor children to protect their inheritance from their father's estate. This was filed and done in Dallas County, AL's Orphans Court. I am seeking any additional information about the above persons or family connections. I am very interested in the Charles Leopard marriage as Elizabeth had two children by him...William C. & Charles N. Leopard. When the Avant sons Nathan & John moved to Arkansas ca. 1846 their half-brothers went with them. It appears that both Nathan and John waited until they reached their age of majority to receive the balance of their inheritance before immigrating to Arkansas. Elizabeth Case Avant Leopard died in 1835. Anyone having information or connections, I would love to hear form you!
