    2. John, thanks for sending the McCullough/McCulloch information. Unfortunately, I can't add too it, and don't see any link with my line in Dallas Co. AL. I will keep searching of course, and post/send anything that looks promising for your line. Here is literally all that I have, related to Dallas Co./Selma area: Moses McCullough came to Alabama about 1837, from Scotland, with his son, F. Moses, who was about 13 years old. There were two other sons, James and Charlie, but no age, or place of birth is known. There is no knowledge of the mother. There was a family farm "on the banks of the Alabama River". F. Moses married in 1860, to a woman named Pamelia/Permelia..possibly McGraw. They had one child, also born in 1860, James Dudley McCullers. (note the name change). Nothing else is known of their life in this area. Thanks, Arlene

    3. Evidently there were a lot of different spellings of the same people's names a few years back--hard to tell if the people themselves created the diversity--intentionally or through ignorance--or if it was some clerk(s) in some office(s)... Anyway: G E N E R A T I O N 1 I N D A L L A S C O U N T Y: My ancestor JOHN Gwin left the Carolinas--not sure if it was NC or SC--and moved into east Tennessee, where he married Jane Walker 8 Apr 1812 in Blount Co. This same John then moved south to Dallas Co., AL, and lived at Cahaba, where son WILLIAM Gwin (no middle name listed) was born 18 Dec. 1820. I'm not sure where John or Jane is buried. He likely had siblings, one or more of whom MAY have moved west with him from the Carolinas--this is pure speculation, however, though there is at least one other Gwin in the area at this time of about the same age, so this may be a brother of John. G E N E R A T I O N 2 I N D A L L A S C O U N T Y (and some gen. 3): John and Jane Gwin had seven children all together, but I'm not sure of the order of their births or where they were all born, though at least one was clearly born in Dallas Co.; therefore, I list them here in alphabetical order: (1) ANN Gwin, m. Joseph Lavalett Basset (brother of Louis who m. sister Sarah, #4 below) (2) CHESLEY (Chess) Gwin--(same first name as John's mother's maiden name, so Chess is likely named for his grandma); m1. Fannie BELL, daughter of a Hard-shell Baptist preacher--raised a big family; m2. a widow, Mrs. Blevins, no children; (3) ISHAM Gwin, (same first name as John's father, so this grandson Isham is likely named for his grandpa.) (4) SARAH Gwin m. Louis Basset (brother of Joseph who m. sister Ann, #1 above)--at least 2 children (gen.3): EMMA Basset (b. 8-3-1843 Cahaba, Ala. m. 5-22-1867 Champe Carter McCullough--1841-1907) and ANN ADELIA Basset (b. 1846, died young) (5) THOMAS Gwin, (6) (daughter, first name unknown) Gwin, m. a Mr. McKnight (7) WILLIAM Gwin (my line) born 18 Dec. 1820 at Cahaba; died 29 Apr 1889 at age 68 and is buried at Wilsonville in Shelby Co.; William was married in Dallas Co. on 12 or 13 May 1842 to Rosa Carlisle Jones WILSON. (Rosa was born 22 Aug 1822--maybe in Wilsonville--and she died 29 Mar 1907 at Tampa, FL, but was buried at Wilsonville, AL). G E N E R A T I O N 3 I N D A L L A S C O U N T Y: William (my line--listed as no. 7 above) and Rosa had eight children: (1) MARY ANN ELIZABETH Gwin b. 23 April 1843; d. 23 Jan 1882; m.25 Jan 1866 to Robert Guy LOCKRIDGE (b. 2 Feb 1838, perhaps in Missouri; d. 15 Jun 1926) (2) MARTHA JANE Gwin (1845-1847); -- d. as infant (3) WILLIAM SUTTON Gwin (my great-grandfather) b. June 5, 1848, at Cahaba, AL, d. 11 Sep 1916); m. 2 Dec 1868 to Ida Eliza BASSETT, b. 5 May 1845 in Worthing Sussex, Engl; d. 8 Dec 1907--bd. unk.--11 children--FAMILY LISTED IN GEN. 4 BELOW (4) JOHN WESLEY Gwin (1851-1877); died age 26 (5) RUFUS KING Gwin b. 16 May 1853; d. 20 Aug 1927; m. 1. Re: [ALDALLAS-L] Population data wanted for 1825-1875
    2. B.J. Thanks! Same here...atlas and web searching didn't turn up anything on towns and cities, but this site looks like it may be a great deal of help. The Wilcox Co. chart you made is very nice! Arlene

    3. Arlene, Greg and All, You can sort population data by myriad categories to the county level at this site: Historical Census Data Browser http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/census/ [ I used the data to construct this chart for Wilcox County: http://www.prairiebluff.com/blackbelt/blacks1820-80.html ] Don't know of any source on the net that breaks down the population by cities and towns for Dallas or Wilcox counties. Searched everywhere for atlases and gazeteers and came up empty. B.J.
