Can anyone tell me if there are any tax records available for Dallas/Montgomery counties for the 1840-1850 time period. If so, would they be located in the counties or in the state archives? I plan a trip to AL soon and need to know where I might look. Any information would be appreciated. Nancy Hargesheimer N110436@aol.com

Would someone be kind enough to look up William C. Norris in the 1860 Dallas Census. I believe his wife, Elizabeth had already died by that time and I would like the names and ages of the children in the household. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Bob, I took the information you sent and sent out a query on the McWhorter side. I hooked up with another McWhorter researcher who asked about the source for Elbert McWhorter (5/6/1731-7/6/1791) being the son of Hugh McWhorter, Sr. She doesn't have Elbert or McFarland on her list of children of Hugh and Jane. I told her I would check with you and let her know. Thanks for the info. Can anyone tell me what happened to PORTLAND Alabama, Dallas County. It has been said to be on the east side of the river at the next bend in the river below Cahawba. It shows on a map search performed on MSN mapping, but fdoes not show on state maps, or in the one book I have on 'Dead Towns' in Alabama. Our Ancrum family is reported to have lived there before 1850. peter gold
Question, How do I get to Live Oak Cemetery, what street? Regards, ccalhoun44@aol.com
Charles Andrew Patterson died 13 Sep 1893 in Selma. He was a carpenter and lived in the city of Selma. Does anyone know in which cemetery he probably would have been buried? Is there an index somewhere to those buried in the various cemeteries? Also, one last question, is there an 1890 census available for Selma? I need to find his family and I can't find that particular census. Thanks so much for helping me out. Carol Carol Patterson Davis Orange Park, Florida

I am researching my mother's maternal family line of Avant. My great-great grandfather was William J. Avant. He was the son of John C. Avant born to Francis Avant & Elizabeth Case (John Case's dtr). They were originally from Marion County, South Carolina. All 5 children of Francis & Elizabeth were born in SC. They were Catherine M. Avant b.1810 and married David Dickerson Dumas; Mary Avant b.1814 married James Downes; Nancy Ann Avant b.1815 and married John G. O'Neal; Lucy T. Avant b.1818 married William H. Hall; Nathan Thomas Avant. b 1820 married Theodocia Wilson of Perry County and John C. Avant b. 1822 married Nancy D. Meredith. All of these children married in or around Dallas County, AL. It is unclear when Francis Avant (their father) died. His last record is in 1820 in the Marion County SC census. Next we find his widow remarried to a Charles Leopard ca. 1828 and she has a guardian named for her minor children to protect their inheritance from their father's estate. This was filed and done in Dallas County, AL's Orphans Court. I am seeking any additional information about the above persons or family connections. I am very interested in the Charles Leopard marriage as Elizabeth had two children by him...William C. & Charles N. Leopard. When the Avant sons Nathan & John moved to Arkansas ca. 1846 their half-brothers went with them. It appears that both Nathan and John waited until they reached their age of majority to receive the balance of their inheritance before immigrating to Arkansas. Elizabeth Case Avant Leopard died in 1835. Anyone having information or connections, I would love to hear form you!

I wondered if he was related to Charles L. Matthews and his family! They lived south of Selma in this timeframe. I have no idea who John Duke is.
