    2. Jeffrey A. Reed
    3. Researching these Dallas County, Alabama surnames: MAYES, SMYLY, BELL Seeking any information on the Mayes & Bell families of Dallas County, Alabama. I am a Dallas county Mayes descendant. My GGGG grandmother was Lucinda Mayes, a daughter of Robert Mayes. Another researcher was able to give the following list of Lucinda's siblings without any dates, but had nothing else. So far I haven't been able to confirm most of it (It's on my To Do list). Anyway, I thought that I would post on the chance that someone has the same line. The three Mayes brothers from Olgethorpe, GA: Thomas, Andrew, and Robert Mayes The Andrew Mayes family went to Union Parish, LA. The Robert Mayes family went to Dallas County, AL. No info on the Thomas Mayes family. The children of Robert Mayes: 1. Lucinda Mayes b. abt.1807, d. aft. 1851 m. James Smyly, Jr. b. abt 1802 - They lived first at Pleasant Hill, then Old Athens, Dallas Co. children: John J. Smyly, Robert M. Smyly, William R. Smyly, Caroline M. Smyly, Thomas Edward Smyly, Joseph Elias Smyly (my GGG grandfather), Charles N. Smyly, Margaret L. Smyly, M. Clemintine Smyly, Martha Smyly, and Lucy Smyly. I have a TON of info that I've found in my research on the Smyly's but Lucinda Mayes is my weak link. 2. Malinda Mayes m. Charles Abercombie - moved to Texas children: no info 3. Matilda Mayes m. John R. Bell who, along with their son John A. Bell, were killed in a duel after verbally defending their slave who was accused of arson at Cahaba. Lived in Cahaba. children: Charles A. Bell, John A. Bell, Thomas Bell, and Lucy Bell. 4. Mary "Polly" Mayes m. Rynan V. Jones children: Wesley Jones (killed in Civil War), Robert Jones (moved to Texas), and Thomas Jones. 5. Nancy Mayes m. Benjamin A. 2. B.J. Smothers
    3. The log of last Thursday night's chat is available. My apologies once again for getting there late and for the 20 minute gap in the middle. I was bumped offline a little after 10 pm and had the darndest time getting back on. I see from the log that several people were talking to me. I wasn't being rude folks but was on and off and missed you. Sorry. http://www.prairiebluff.com/wilcox/chat/chatlog090700.html You can also find previous chat logs here: http://www.prairiebluff.com/wilcox/chat/chatlog081700.html http://www.prairiebluff.com/wilcox/chat/chatlog082400.html http://www.prairiebluff.com/wilcox/chat/chatlog083100.html If anyone has suggestions for a better way to log these chats, let me know. Please send your suggestions for future chats. I plan to host one for those researching their slave ancestors. I'd like for both the descendants of slaves and the descendants of slaveowners with information to share to participate. All genealogist have their brick walls but 1870 is is the highest and most impenetrable one for slave researchers. So if anyone with family bibles, plantation papers, family histories that mention slaves can help those looking for their enslaved families this would be great. Would anyone who'd like to participate in this kind of exchange please contact me so I can have an idea of how many (there's a physical limitation on the number of participants in the chat room), how to structure the chat so that it flows smoothly for the benefit of all, and who will host/co-host. Thanx, B.J. Smothers

    3. Robert Joseph FOWLER. My grandfather RJF,Jr. was a native of Selma. We're looking for information about his family. In The Story of Selma by Walter M. Jackson, there are references to Robert J. FOWLER and R.J. FOWLER., from the minutes of the Selma City Council, 1881. RJF Jr. went to Oklahoma and is buried in Oklahoma City. He was a railroad detective for many years, as supposedly was his father. We have no information about siblings or other relatives. Family story: the elder FOWLER was known for taking in children. It was said one never knew how many were going to be seated for supper until they all got there. One set of orphans came to supper and stayed in the household until they married.

    1. Re: [ALDALLAS-L] Early Census
    2. Carol, Yes there is a census for Dallas County in 1900, 1910, and 1920 availabe to the public. Most of the 1890 census was destroyed in a fire. I don't believe any of Dallas County 1890 survived. The 1930 census will be made availabe after 2002. Almost any large genealogical library should have these on micro-film or can get them on inter-labrary loan. James R. Rasco

Hi Bobby, I don'T have anything on Benjamin Whatley and very little other then some marriage notes on other but on of my gr. gr. uncles, Robert Calvin Ware Rasco also left Dallas County Alabama between 1865 and 1870 and moved to Freestone County Texas where he resided a year or two and then moved on to Comanche County Texas. A sister of his, Sarah Jane Rasco married, as her second husband, J. T. Whatley in Shelby County Alabama. In my research on the Rasco family in Alabama I have come across the Whatley name several time either in association with the Rascos or living in the same general area as the Rascos. James R. Rasco
