My only requirements regarding Roll Calls is that you DO NOT put "Roll Call" as the subject. It isn't helpful to anyone who previews their messages or receives the Digest nor is it meaningful when folks are searching the list messages by thread. Remember that all these messages are archived and that they're searchable by surname, topic, and the more recent posts are also threaded. Just go to RootsWeb's main page http://www.rootsweb.com and follow the search links. So, 1. Please put your surnames or whatever your actual topic is as the subject of the message, and 2. Expand on the subject a little. This list is only a few months old and when we first started we did a modified Roll Call and I posted some of the mini-histories that came across the list on the Dallas County website. Will be happy to add any new ones. Also, I have chosen not to make the default reply a "reply to the list" because sometimes folks just want to go private. However, if you have ANY info that you think might even remotely be of interest to another person on the list, please don't hesitate to hit that "reply to all" button. Better that more information comes across the list than less. Happy Searching, B.J. Smothers ALDALLAS Listowner dallas@prairiebluff.com
Hi I too, have connections in Dallas. There is a William STONE, around 1820's there. There is a Nathaniel STONE. Also, William R. STONE. I am trying to figure out if a Fielding TAYLOR was father to my William W. TAYLOR also. It seems that all of these bought land in Dallas Co. William R. STONE moved into Perry Co. and lived untill he died. This is my g g grandfather. His son, Columbus married a TAYLOR in Perry Co. So, STONE & TAYLOR are the two names I am trying to find in DALLAS who went to Perry Co. This was early 1800's. Anyone else looking for these? Susie
Hello: Does anyone have any information on Mary Ann Julia Reid, an elusive character? She was born in Perry County 3 June 1836, daughter of Jane Reid (b 1799 in SC), and probably related to the family of Josiah Reid (Reed)/Elizabeth Woods Reid of Dallas Co. At age 14 (1850) M.A. Julia Reid was living not far from the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, north of Summerfield (Dallas Co). I surmise that ca 1860-1861 she married her cousin William Luther Reid (or one of his brothers); William L Reid was probably killed as a Confederate soldier. When the estate of Elizabeth Woods Reid was settled in 1867-1868, "Mrs. Mary Ann Julia Reid" was listed as one of the several heirs -- presumably because she was the widow of William Luther -- receiving the amount of approximately $500. Three years later, in 1870, she is listed as housekeeper for the family of Emmett Campbell, nearby. . At age 40, in 1876, she married widower Willis H Green (1823-1890), whose first wife was Cynthia Woods, a niece of Elizabeth Woods Reid. Both Julia Reid Green and Willis H Green are buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery, near Woods kinfolks. . She died 15 February 1897. I have never found a marriage license for William Luther Reid and Julia Reid, nor any record of the Confederate service of William Luther Reid -- or his brothers John or Finis or Cyrus. . I know that William Luther living (single) in his mother's household in 1860. He was deceased by 1867, as were all but one of his brothers, Nathan Byers Reid. . If she did not marry William Luther or "one of the Reid boys" then why is she listed as an heir of Elizabeth W Reid's estate.? What happened to William Luther and his brothers? M A Julia Reid (I believe) had brothers James C Reid (1823) and Thomas A Reid (1832), and a sister Nancy Ann Reid (1819) who married James H Lee. Can anyone shed any light on why "Mrs Julia Reid" was listed as one of the heirs of Elizabeth Woods Reid? Many thanks. Robert E Parrott, Knoxville TN

This way maybe we can get a conversation going about Dallas County, AL. It is really helpful to include a general timeframe when requesting information about a family name. Don't know about others on the list, but I try to respond if I can by checking my puny resources. Do you know what time your Durden-McVay's lived in Dallas Co.? or where they came from? do you have other names that they may have been associated with (as many families traveled together and they can be found in several locations together)? what age would they have been at the time? Also, I am usually willing to do a limited number of census lookups as I live close to the Federal Archives. If it is ok with the listowner, how about everyone posting their Dallas Co roots? I am looking for any information on Rufus Cochran. The only information we have about this ancestor is as follows: We believe he was born in Selma, Ala in 1858. The family stories are that his parents were killed by indians and Rufus was sent to live with kin. Another story is that he traveled to Texas with a family named Bell. We do know he married in Waco Texas to Sarah (Lizzie) Halford in 1879, and his daughter Mary Olivea Cochran married Clarence Jenkins in 1901. If anyone has information or can direct me to places where I can research, I would be eternally grateful. We have been knocking against this brickwall for a long time. Many thanks, Roseanna Jenkins, Fresno, California
