Charles: According to "Place Names in Alabama" by Virginia Foscue, I find the following: Summerfield was a settlement with discontinued Post Office at 323114NO 870230W in Dallas County. It was named for a nearby stream, was the first settlement by white people in the county; it was made here c. 1819 under the direction of James Russell. Name changed to SUMMERFIELD for John Summerfield, a prominent Methodist minister, when PO was established in 1845. I hope this helps you. Kathryn

The Town of Selma was incorported on December 4, 1820 by an act passed by the State Legislature. ################################################################# p. 12 On the 2nd day of November 1827 the first newspaper was issued in Selma. It was titled the "Selma Courier" and the second inside page contained a marriage notice by Rev. Charles Crowe of ELIJAH TABER and MISS SUNNAH SIMS duaghter of Redick Sims. ################################################################ p.142 1811-18 - The company (Selma Land Company) employed Redick Sims, who had been engaged by the Government in running out the wild lands in the Cahaba land district, to survey and lay off a town, and draw numerous plats or maps of the same. ################################################################## So, according to the book, Redick Sims surveyed and layed out the Town of Selma. There is also something about an Elisha W. Sims, but nothing saying he is the son of Redick---If you want it, let me know and I will send it to you. You may alread have the above information, and if you do forgive me for duplication. I hope it helps. Good luck on your search.
