    3. There were no birth records maintained by the State of Alabama until 1908, most of the time it will be Bible Records to prove the birth of a person or the age at the time of census and that is only as good as the person giving the information to the census taker. as with a death cert. it is only as good as the informant, sometimes they give the exact years, months and days of age on the death cert if they died after 1908 it might help to order a death cert. ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Bailey (by way of smothers@mindspring.com) <babs@the-i.net> To: <ALDALLAS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 28, 1999 12:50 PM Subject: [ALDALLAS-L] Census Lookup: James Richard Palmer : Need to obtain proof of birth. 1. [ALDALLAS-L] Jordan, Darby, and Dietz Surnames in Dallas County
    2. J. Ralph Jordan
    3. Dear Mr. Smothers, My name is James Ralph Jordan, Jr. My father, James Ralph (Shug) Jordan, Sr. was a native son of Selma, Alabama, Born there on September 27, 1910. I'm trying to learn more about my fathers lineage, particularly the Alabama component. His mothers name was Katherine Darby, the daughter of William Darby and Mary Elizabeth Dietz. My fathers father was James H. Jordan, an employee of Southern Railroad, who migrated from West Virginia around 1900. I have traced my grandfathers lineage in West Virginia, but know very little about my grand mothers family in Dallas County. The Darby and Dietz names are seemingly not included in the various surname list, etc. for Dallas County. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, J. Ralph Jordan P.O. 3. Belva, I do not know if he returned to the States. His son, John, did return for a short time when his sister's husband, Warrington Wingfield, died. Although, we have not been able to ascertain exactly when this was. He returned to Brazil when he felt that his sister was going to be well cared for by her sons. The descendants of this family are still there.
