[x-posted from the NORRIS-L list] Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 22:22:05 -0500 From: "Mark A. Evans" <maevans@mindspring.com> To: NORRIS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NORRIS-L] Josiah E. Norris B.J., J.E. Norris of Dallas and Perry Co., AL, appears to have a connection to the family of William Hutchinson Norris (probably a brother) that lived in Dallas Co., AL, Monroe Co., AL and later moved to Brazil, South America. William Hutchinson Norris is the son of William Norris and Nancy Watkins. The earlier William Norris died 1844, Harris Co., GA. Some notes to support this relationship: 1. Chambers Co., AL Deed Bk 10, pg 213-214: Josiah E. Norris and his wife, Mary A. Norris, both residents of Dallas Co., AL, sold land in Chambers Co., AL to William Adams, Sec 26 Twp 23 Rng 25 on 17 Jan 1851. (There is no evidence that this couple actually lived in Chambers Co.) Owning property just a short distance away were Harris F. Norris, John M. Norris, William H. Norris with Young R. Norris. J.E. Norris received this property in 1838, about the same time that other sons of William Norris and Nancy Watkins came to the county. 2. Search the Perry Co., AL, BLM Website and it will show that Josiah E. Norris owned property in Sec 3 Twp 16 Rng 6 in 1835. William H. Norris owned property in the same section, township and range in 1835. Rigdon Norris and William H. Norris together recieved property in the same twp and range but in section 33 in 1837. This Josiah E. Norris may be the missing son of William Norris and Nancy Watkins that was called Elom (Elam) on several early documents in Jasper Co., GA (before 1820). I do not know what become of this family after 1860. Many members of the collateral family moved west. Teresa
On my DOT map of Dallas County I locate a Church called New Liberty Church about three quarters of a mile south of Highway 80 on County Road # 7. This is in the southeastern part of the county near the Lowndes County line. My map does not indicate that there is a cemetery at the church but there are unnamed cemeteries in the same general area. I do not see any places named Liberty or Old Liberty but I might be over looking it. The surveying coordinantes do not help me but if the directions to the cemetery are given or the Section, Range and township are given I will locate it on my map. James R. Rasco
My great-great-great grandfather, Caleb Parish, is buried in Liberty Cemetery in Dallas County. If anyone knows the location of this cemetery, please reply to this message. Thanks, Larry Covert

Getting closer and closer to establishing that this Norris family is mine. But what happened to them after 1860? Can't find anything else on Josiah or sons after the war. In 1860 Josiah and sons were overseers or clerks probably on the farms of (63/63) Josiah E. Irby, (65/65) E.T. Seltzer, (67/67) Levi Parks, (68/68) Classa (Clarissa) Veazey Mixon (widow of Isaac Mixon), (71/71) Jonathan Hazel, and (61/61) Jasper and Elizabeth Cravens Ervin. In 1860 the Norrises were listed with, next to or near these households. 1860 Wilcox County Census Western Division, Prairie Bluff Pct 61/61 J.B. Norris, 18M 69/69 John A. Norris, 21M 70/70 J.E. I have recently started research on my grmother and grgrmother Rebecca Lois Samples and Susie Parker Samples. Susie Parker married Sam(uel) Samples and had 5 children - James, Walter, Mary, Mattie and Rebecca (my grmother). I understand that the Samples lived on (or near) Minter Ave. in Selma. Rebecca then married R. J. Anderson and moved to Detroit, Michigan. Two children were born from this union: Theresa Lois Anderson (my mother) and R. J. II . Rebecca was widowed while still pregnant with R.J. II . She then married James Edward Ward and 1 child was born from this union (James E. Ward, Jr.) Rebecca died 8 months after the birth of James, Jr. in appx Dec 1950 - Jan 1951. Funeral services were held in Michigan and the body was sent south to be buried. Rebecca's sister, Mattie lived here in Michigan until her death in 1997-1998. I also understand that Susie Parker Samples died in 1973-1974. I have been unsucessful in researching Social Security death records to find informaton! about either of my relatives. If anyone has information about either, please e-mail me mailto:dionned@prodigy.net Thank you.

I read with interest information you have collected on the Wilson and Rosco families. I am interested in any wills or estate inventories that list slaves owned by your ancestors. Nia Peeples Kathy Peeples Kemp I saw your posting on the Dallas County Alabama Rootsweb mailing list concerning information about Ezekiel B. Wilson. I too would like additional information about him. He was one of my great, great, great, grandfathers. I believe you have a couple of mistakes in your message. First, I do not think he died in Clarke County Mississippi but rather in Clarke County Alabama. The final settlement of his estate dated July 7, 1870 is recorded in the Probate Minutes, Book "N", page 92 at the Courthouse at Grove Hill, Alabama. I do not have a copy of this settlement but did take some notes. According to what I found E.B. Wilson died at least 60 days prior to October 16, 1863. The heir named in the settlement in July 1870 were: Washington Wilson, James M. Wilson, Ezekiel Wilson, and Mary E. Rasco. There is also indications of a settlement in the estate of N. Burdine Wilson, (Nathaniel Burdine Wilson) eldest son of Ezekiel B. Wilson, recorded in Book "L", page 286 dated February 15, 1866. At that time the record show that James Wilson was living in the state of Iowa. N. B. Wilson also died in Clarke County Alabama per the probate records of that County. The other error in your posting was that Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco was a grand daughter of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson. She in fact was a daughter of his and my great, great, grandmother. Mary Ann Elizabeth Wilson was born December 12, 1834 and died April 27, 1874. Her first husband (my great, great, grandfather) was William Ephraim Rasco who she married in Dallas County Alabama on October 10, 1852. William Ephraim Rasco died November 2, 1866 and on April 5, 1869 Mary Ann married Joseph S. Drapers. They moved to Kemper County Mississippi where Drapers ran away leaving her and her six Rasco children. Mary Ann may have briefly returned to Alabama but was listed in the 1870 census of Neshoba County Mississippi, page 375, family number 1286 as Mary Ann Rasco with children: William T. Rasco, Wilson E. Rasco, James M. Rasco, Martha T. Rasco, and a negro servant named Jackson Rasco. Living on the near by farm of William J. Gentry, was another son, my Great grandfather, John H. Rasco. On the farm of James Wilson was another son, Ezekiel B. Rasco. This census was taken on June 24, 1870. On August 31, 1870, Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco married her first husband nephew, James Lafayette Rasco and they moved to Scott County Mississippi where they had two children: Richmond Austin Rasco born July 5, 1871 and James Rasco born April 24. 1874. Both mother and infant died three days later. Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco is buried in the Contrell Methodist Church Cemetery just south of Lena, Mississippi in Scott County. Ezekiel Burdine Rasco (1800-1863) was married to Sarah H. Rasco a daughter of Jesse Rasco and Elizabeth (possibly Harrison). I have not been able to locate a record of their marriage but I am sure it was in Dallas County Alabama and is one of the unrecorded marriages of that county. That Ezekiel B. Wilson was married to Sarah H. Rasco is proven in the will and estate settlement of her father, Jesse Rasco who died in Dallas County in 1840. Ezekiel and Sarah with their children were listed in the 1850 census of Dallas County Alabama. They had moved away by 1860, apparently to Clarke County Alabama. I believe Ezekiel and his son Nathaniel or Nathan, ran a hotel there. Apparently Sarah, Ezekiel's wife died before he did possibly in Dallas County. Nathan Burdine Wilson married Mary Jane (Fisher) Rasco the widow of John Alton Rasco a brother of William Ephraim Rasco. John Alton Rasco died in Dallas County Alabama on July 4, 1865 and sometimes between then and whenever Nathan B. Wilson died, she married him. She moved back from Clarke County Alabama to Dallas County and was living with some of the Wilson. She then married a man named T. D. Booth and they moved to White County Arkansas. It is true that two of Mary Ann Elizabeth Rasco's sons lived and died in Clarke County Mississippi at Stonewall, Mississippi. There were also other relatives there as well as Scott, Leake, and Nashoba Counties. I believe that the son Ezekiel Burdine Wilson jr. was also in Mississippi, perhaps Kemper County. I have not tried to trace these Wilson children or descendants. As for who the parents of Ezekiel Burdine Wilson was or exactly where in South Carolina he was born, I do not know. I would like to know however so if you find out please let me know. There was a military officer in the Continental Army from South Carolina named Ezekiel B. Wilson. Our Ezekiel Burdine Wilson may have been his son or a nephew. That is about all I know at this time. How are you related or connected to Ezekiel Burdine Wilson? James R. Rasco
Good Morning Dallas County researchers, Finally finished the redesign of the Dallas County webpage (and Wilcox County too). The new format should make the page faster to load and easier to navigate. If you haven't visited in a while, take a look and let me know what you think: http://www.prairiebluff.com/algenweb/dallas/ Posted most of the backlogged 1999 queries and this years are current through March 1. All of the queries were forwarded to the ALDALLAS list so you haven't missed any but still haven't posted Nov and Dec 1999 on the website so that they're searchable there. I'm in the process of updating the surnames list so if you don't see yours, please be patient. It should be completed by the end of the week. Now, here's where I need your help folks. Take a look at the Online Records section. Pretty slim offerings, right? I just know that you all are sitting on wills, cemetery listings, property records, obits, family histories, bios, marriage records, church histories, and snippets of this and that. So what are you waiting for? Send them to me. I don't care what it is. If it's related to Dallas County genealogy or history, I want it! B.J. Smothers ALDALLAS-L Listowner

Bob, In the book "Selma, Her Institutions and Her men" by John Hardy, p.37, it was written that the Whig Party who backed W. H. Harrison for president and John Tyler for vice president formed a "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too" club. Robert S. Hatcher was a member of this club and was sent as part of the delagation to the Convention in Montgomery in 1840. In the same book, but on page 135 it states that on the 8th of June 1872, the members of the Masonic Lodge # 27 in Selma went to Hatcher's Bluff on the Alabama River and assisted Halo Lodge in the burial ceremonies of Robert S.
