"Captain" Swift was so very helpful to my daughter and me when we first visited Selma seeking our Blevins' ancestors a couple of years ago and then again last year. The address is: The Crossroads Visitor Information Center 2207 Broad Street Selma, AL 334-875-7485 This information was on the Selma and Dallas County Map which was given to us at the center, and I would think it is still correct. Irma AHamptonResearch@aol.com wrote: > Would anyone on the list know how to get in touch with the "Senior Citizen" > Mr. Swift who runs the information center in Selma. > Thanks, > Arlene Hampton
Joe, I don't know how far back you're talking about with the Swift family in Dallas County, but Bill Swift is one of Selma's "senior citizens" who still runs a information center in town there. The Swift Drug Store was a fixture in town when I was growing up (50's and 60s) and is still run by family members. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Swift Plantation, but I'm sure somebody out there has some information on it. ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Swift (by way of "B.J. My great aunt Susan (Walker) TIBBIT died in Selma, Dallas Co., AL. on 11/07/1930. According to her obit she was survived by her husband, W.A. TIBBIT and three daughters: Mrs. W. M. GALLIGHER of 1212 Selma Dr.; Mrs. C.B BARR of Houston, TX. and Mrs. H. R. HENDERSON also of Houston, TX. Was wondering if any other Dallas Co., AL. researchers have any of the above mentioned surnames in their database. Brislin Brothers was in charge of her services ... does that funeral home still exist? Lisa Williams Texas
ALOHA, I am interested in obtaining/sharing information on the SWIFT families of Dallas County and particularly in obtaining information about the Swift Plantation. Thank You, Joe Swift Kailua, Hawaii
Well, I think I would first go to the AL-DALLAS website at http://www.prairiebluff.com/algenweb/dallas/ and look around. There are all kinds of search engines and it is VERY well done, I would say. Here is a hyperlink to the website: ALDallas County Genweb Good Hunting, Carole in Delaware
Does anyone have information on an Elias Smith? I think he had three daughters. That is all the information that I have to go on at this moment in time. Herman Walker

Would anyone on the list know where I could find information on the schools that were in Dallas County, AL in the 1830's and 1840's? Thanks, Arlene Hampton AHamptonResearch@aol.com
Dear List: Can anyone give me the names or websites of all the churches to be found in Selma Ala. during 1855 - 1865. Since I can't find RUFUS COCHRAN anywhere else in Selma, I thought I would try the church records, if there were any that weren't destroyed by the War. Many thanks for any help. Roseanna, Fresno, Ca.
Dear Rosanna of Fresno, Have you tried any Masonic orders---they have been around for a long time and they have pretty good records. Unfortunately, I don't know the names of the ones in Dallas County. I live in Mississippi. Does anyone in the area know if the Providence Baptist Church (primitive Baptist) which was founded in the mid 1800's is still in existence? A ggggrandfather of mine was one of the founders, and I would like to see if there are any old records from the church which might give info on dates of death for other family members, place of burial, etc. Any help will be appreciated. Fredrica, I don't have any information about your Martin, but I am looking for information on Malicia Martin, believed to be from Dallas Co. She married Moses McCullough in 1856. Moses McCullough had a farm on a river in Dallas County, AL during this time. Any information on the children or siblings of your Martins will be most appreciated. Thank you. Arlene Hampton

I have a letter dated October 25, 1848 to my ggg-grandfather, Atlas Jones Martin, from his father, John Bethune Martin. At that time, Atlas Jones Martin was a school teacher living in Liberty Hill, Alabama. I believe that to be a "beat" of Dallas County. I don't know if a "beat" is like a "ward" on a census. I think there might have been a town, now dead, in Dallas County named Athens and Liberty Hill might have been in or around that area of Dallas County. The letter also mentions a Dr. Marsh and Lady who lived nearby. Atlas Jones Martin later lived at Martin Station, Alabama, also in Dallas County. His land was about 23 miles out of Selma, between what are now Orville and Safford. He married Harriett (or Harriott) Elizabeth Shields (widow of a Mr. Smith), farmed, was a grocer and raised his children all at Martin Station. Does anyone have any inforamtion on Liberty Hill or Atlas Jones Martin? Thanks so much! Fredreica
