Would anyone on the list know the history of, or have a link to information on Old Town, in Dallas Co. AL? Thanks, Arlene Hampton
What Do Those Initials Mean? Initials after your ancestor's names may provide useful information that you'd not expected. The following list includes initials you may come across when reading old wills or other documents. a.a.s. died in the year of his/her age (anno aetitis suae) (86 y/o or died in year 86 of his/her life) d.s.p. died without issue (decessit sine prole legitima) d.s.p.l. died without legitimate issue (decessit sine prole mascula supesita) d.s.p.m.s. died without surviving male issue (decessit sine prole mascula supersita) d.s.p.s died without surviving issue (decessit sine prole supersita) d.unm died unmarried d.v.p. died in the lifetime of his father (decessit vita patris) d.v.m. died in the lifetime of his mother (decessit vita matris) Et al and others (et alia) Inst present month (instans) Liber book or volume Nepos grandson Nunc Nuncapative will, an oral will, written by a witness Ob he/she died (obit) Relict widow or widower (relicta/relictus) Sic so or thus, exact copy as written Testes witnesses Utl late (ultimo) Ux or vs wife (uxor) Viz namely (videlicet)
Looking for information on M. ELISAH ELY and REBECCA ELY. They are in the 1850's census of DALLAS COUNTY. MARTHA JANE ELY married HENRY YATES, 2 NOV 1846. Don't know if they had children. YATES died and MARTHA, remarried HENRY WILLIAMS IN 1879. Also looking to find where MARY ANN ELY is buried. Mary died in 1848, I'm guessing in DALLAS COUNTY. THANK YOU. SUSAN ELY
Suzanne: In your book, Selma: her Institutions and her men, is there any mention of a Samuel KELLY, Andrew KELLY, James R. KELLY? They lived in Dallas County at that time, having moved from South Carolina. I am also interested in whether this Dallas County Chat will be logged or archived, so that those of us who might not make it home in time to participate, might also be able to read a transcript of it. Thanks, Arlene Hampton
Frankie, According to the book SELMA; HER INSTITUTIONS AND HER MEN there was, in 1839, a W. S. Ritchie from Delaware who opened an office as a civil engineer and surveyor, but died August 16, 1840 of billious fever. In Mississippi there is an Itawamba County located in north Mississippi just at the Alabama line and there is a Marshall County wherein was a town named Ittawamba. This little community was a few miles away from Holly Springs, Ms. which is in North Mississippi just a little south of the Tennessee line. Holly Springs and Ittawamba had a bitter struggle over which town would be named county seat. Holly Springs won and now there is little rememberance that the town of Ittawamba was ever there. ( The information about the counties is from a book, HOMETOWN, MISSISSIPPI by James F. Brieger.) I hope this information has been of some help. Hi, Just received your notice of the Dallas Co Chat on Thurs 06/08. Unfortunately I will be having company from out of state and am not sure that I will be able to join you on that date. However, was wondering if there is any possibility that the chat will be available to those of us that are not able to make it on this particular date in a written form so that we can be aware of what transpired during the chat. I really am very interested in any information available as I know very little about that location and do have a vested interest in it. Either way it is hoped that you will keep me informed if there is another one in the near future which hopefully I will be able to attend. Thanks Muriel
Please join me Thursday evening, June 8, 2000 at 8-10pm CT for the first Dallas County CHAT. Interest is very high so even though I don't have an expert guest for out inaugural session, let's just make it a "getting acquainted" night. All of us "experts" can help each other. The chat software I'm using is the free Parachat client. You have to have a Java-enabled browser to use it (sorry Web TV users). So go here http://www.parachat.com/pchat.htm to check whether you can see the chat window. Please try some of the demos and, if you need to, read the FAQs for chatters. Try it today or tomorrow so that, if necessary, you'll have time to upgrade your browser. Also, I've heard from some Mac users that occasionally they have incompatibility problems with Java. I'll send a reminder and the location of the chat room in a followup post tonight or tomorrow. BTW, if anyone's interested in Wilcox County, their 2nd chat is tonight: WHEN: Tues, June 6, 2000 TIME: 8-10pm CT WHERE: http://www.prairiebluff.com/wilcox/chat/ TOPIC: General chat HOST: Wanda Costello (0378) B.J. I am also interested in the idea of a DALLAS Co. Chat Group. I am looking for information on the RITCHIE family of Dallas Co. John Calhoun Ritchie married Jane Elizabeth McBride Campbell in ca.1834. They leave for Itwamba MS by 1840, then on into Bradley Co. AR in 1858. Would appreciate any help. Frankie Ochsner at msjo@hsnp.com

If they were Episcopalians, check out Bill Henderson's site of marriages, Baptisms, etc, of St. Paul's Episcopla Church in Carlowville. I think you can get there from the ALDallas Homepage. I have heard that there are several well-maintained graveyards in Carlowville, also, but I haven't been there to check them out, yet. Good luck. Fred PS. Scott and Wade are family names of mine, too! Hey there Bill! Thanks for sending those links! Tell ol' Tubby Joe I said howdy! <g> Are you going to "do" the Dallas County Chat? Hope to see you there. I still haven't found the "fam'bly farm" down there. Am hoping somebody who knows lots more about the county than I do, will be on the Chat. Later, Arlene
I don't have any suggestions for a featured guest, but I am most interested in a Dallas County Chat! Arlene Hampton AHamptonResearch@aol.com Researching McCULLERS/McCULLOUGH families in Dallas County, AL.
Good Sunday ALL, I'd like to host the first Dallas County Chat one evening this week. We had a really nice first session for Wilcox County last week with Ouida Woodson, Wilcox County Historian, as our guest. Is there anyone on the list who'd like to be our featured guest? Just need to know more than the rest of us about Dallas County and have two hours to spend fielding questions. Let me know, B.J. Smothers ALDALLAS-L Listowner
