McGlawn Died Here On Tuesday Passing Leaves Lone Confederate Veteran In County Deceased was 93 Years Of Age; Funeral Held Wednesday John William McGlawn, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. Armstrong here on Tuesday at 5: 30 p.m. after an illness of several weeks. The deceased was one of the two surviving veterans in the county. His death leaves G.W. Bowdin as the sole survivor of the Confederate Army in Cullman. He was 93 years, one month and two days of age when death came. He was a member of Co. E. 31st Alabama Infantry, and served with his father Edward McGlawn, in the Army of Tennessee, being in the Siege of Vicksburg, and the battles of Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Atlanta. Born in Randolph County, Alabama, he married Miss Susan Armstrong in 1869 and nine children were born to this union. Four of them surviving are: W.S. McGlawn, of Hanceville, Rev. W.P. McGlawn, of Tarrant; Mrs. Kate Henderson, of Birmingham, and Mrs. B. Armstrong, of Cullman. Surviving also is a brother, Rev. D.S. McGlawn of Decatur, 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Robert Rosson and Leon Armstrong of Cullman are grandchildren. The funeral and burial was held at Hopewell on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m., with Rev. W.G. Bartee, of the First Methodist Church here, officiating. Grandsons served as pallbearers. The deceased joined the Methodist Church at the age of 15, having been a member of rover 78 years.
