This might be useful for some who want to add a little something extra to their genealogy research and files. http://www.googleearth.com You do have to download the program but there is a free download. What you get is a satellite view of the Earth. You can put in an address to search for and it will automatically take you to that spot so you get an aerial view of wherever on the Earth you want. Depending on the computer system you have and how much detai is visible you can pretty good aerial views which you can then print. For example I can get close enough to an old family stomping ground in a little town in Illinois that I can clearly see trees in their front yards. On the other hand I can only get close enough to an old family stomping ground in Scotland to see the layout of the farm fields - it gets too blurry to see houses or other buildings. But, I still think this adds quite alot to my research. BTW, the Birmingham area is one in which you can get down to smallest details - vehicles on the streets, etc. Might give you an idea of the area where your ancestors lived with a different perspective than you get on a colored map. You could see the layout of the land - mountains and waterways, etc. We have a trucking company we run out of our house out in the boonies and you can clearly see the big trucks and smaller vehicles in our yard.
