Anyone familier with a Baptist Minister by the name of Orson Laurence? He owned land in the Hanceville area and lived in what was Blount county. He is listed in the 1880 Blount county, Census, born about 1801 died after August 1883. He was affiliated with the Black Warrior or Little Warrior(hard to read)branch of the Baptist Church. I found reference to him in the Rocky Creek Baptist Church records (in Morgan Co). He along with John Holmes was one of the founders of that church. Any clues or information would help. He had 11 children, wife was Arabella Allen. When I checked at the court house in Oneonta, they said his land would have been in what is now Cullman county. His daughter, Mary Jane Laurence Barnes (married to James Terrell Barnes) has many descendants in that area. Other names are Callahan, Nobles, Vest, Ratliff, Watts, Allen, Woodall, and Johnson. I'd appreciate any clues....Thanks! Christie Laurence Ingham <[email protected]>
I'm still confused about this church. Is it located inside Cullman county? Someone asked if the graves were listed. There is a book called Cemetaries of Cullman county that listed grave sites. I'm not sure if that one is listed. Is Congregational the denomination? Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christie L. This is in Cullman Co. by about 3 miles. My in-laws live on Edmondson Rd. in Hanceville. Instead of going all the way to Pitts', we always turn and go by "The Big House". This church is on the corner where we turn. The river is the boundary between the counties in that area. The Blount Co. side has houses right up to the bluff but the Cullman Co. side still has the natural woodsy area around it. When my kids were small, we'd cross the bridge singing "over the river and thru the woods to Grandmother's house we go." I'm rambling. This started out to be an offer to stop at the cemetery next Sunday if anyone needed a lookup. It's only about a 2 acre cemetery so it shouldn't take long to find a specific grave.
