We also went to Wallace on our research trip. We spent the entire time on the 5th floor with the microfiche/microfilm. That is where we found many military documents for my gg-grandfather, John Wesley Young. He was with the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union). We were also making copies of several death certificates which are on microfilm there. They have a very extensive collection of vertical family files and they are also cross-indexed on index cards for other surnames which might appear within those family files. I found quite a bit of information just in those alone. Cullman County Public Library also has vertical family files which have quite a bit of information. I think in both places the majority of the family files concern local surnames. We didn't have time to include a trip to the 6th floor to look at the collection of books. Hopefully on another trip I might do that. But, I haven't exhausted all of the resources available at Cullman library and most of the cemeteries of interest to me are in the northern and western part of that area. Hanceville is in the southern region and I have no ancestry in that part (that I'm aware of so far). My next trip to Cullman I will make copies of obits in the Cullman newspapers on microfilm at the library. I am not aware of what newspapers may be on microfilm at Wallace State. I was a bit disappointed to find that the city directories for Cullman (which included some rural listings BTW) available at Cullman library only go back to 1963. Is anyone aware of a collection of Cullman city directories that date back further? Do those directories include Jones Chapel or South Vinemont areas and/or are there directories available for those areas? The two ladies in the microfilm section at Wallace State were very helpful and personally interested in our genealogy and personally interested in helping us find what we were looking for. They didn't just answer our questions. They asked us questions to further verify all of that. Barry Jernigan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
