The (Cullman) Alabama Tribune, 18 Jul 1889 The Brushy Picnic. The citizens of Brushy Creek celebrated the birth day of liberty as well as the 83rd birthday of "Uncle David Speegle" by a picnic, orations, singing and music by the Fireman's Brass Band, on last Monday. Notwithstanding the heavy rains and dark clouds of the early morning kept many away, there was a large crowd present to enjoy the festivities. Col. T.C. Wilhite was the orator of the day and entertained the audience for about an hour with the early history and settlement of the country, in which "Uncle Davy" and many of the older settlers present bore an active part. After eating an excellent dinner the audience reassembled around the stand to listen to a historical narrative of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, its settlement, the red man, &c., by F.W.H. Speegle; after which the Declaration of Independence was read by A.A. Speegle. F.W.H. Speegle followed with an eloquent and patriotic appeal to those present to stand steadfast in support of the principles set forth in the declaration of independence, and reminding them of the words of the great and good George Washington, "United we stand, divided we fall." The deeds of good men life after them. Although David Speegle has never distinguished himself as a warrior upon the battle field, or as a statesman in the councils of the nation, yet he had done more, he has established the reputation of an honest man, "the noblest work of God." He has lived to see himself appreciated and honored by his neighbors, and as he looks back upon a well spent life, when the time comes to bid adieu to earth, he can exclaim with a faith unshaken, "Now Lord, lettest thou they servant depart in peace." Robert Calvert and Joseph Livingston, two of the oldest citizens of the county, were present and enjoyed the proceedings. [David Speegle was born 15 Jul 1806 and died 16 Jul 1890, buried Brushy Creek Cemetery; Robert Calvert was born 17 Nov 1819 and died 12 Nov 1901, buried Robert (Bob) Calvert Family Cemetery; Joseph Livingston was 91 on his birthday celebrated in 1892, he died 15 Aug 1893, burial location unknown.]
