I apologize for this error. Washington is not a middle name in the Handleys associated with our Youngs. Washington is a middle name in the Coley family associated with our Youngs. My grandmother had only two living siblings (or that she regarded as full siblings) - Gertrude (really only a half-sister - same mother/different father - but she was adopted) and Geneva (full sibling - same mother and father). Gertrude married Rufus Coley whose father's middle name was Washington. Geneva married Luther "Luke" Handley whose parents' names are unknown to me. I only know of both families in Jefferson County, Alabama. I haven't researched either of them anywhere else. I don't know their origins. Barbara Handley was the only one in the family doing any research (as far as I am aware). She died of cancer a few years back. I asked about her research notes but have never received a reply. Hopefully the family preserved them all. She put alot of work into the project. I think one of her sisters had been helping her but I don't know if she is actively researching now. I do know that Barbara had alot of Handley photos and other notes that had no connection with the Young family. But I don't recall if she mentioned the family's origins. I only have Barbara's report, "Descendants of Wesley Young" and that shows the descendants of Luther "Luke" Handley and Geneva Young and no further back than them in the Handley family. Time permitting I will see if I can find a connection to all of this - if there is one. Now I have Morgan County to add to the research area as well? ;-) How the plot thickens. lol Good luck to all in their research Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN PS My grandmother also had four other half-siblings - a brother and three sisters (same father/different mother).

I just remembered this. Washington is also a middle name in the Handley family. I know it's a common middle name. Still, I wonder if it might have been passed down through connected families. Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN
BTW Washington was a middle name in James Young's Young line as well. Barry Jernigan
I only know of Handleys in Jefferson County,AL. However, James Young's line had Thomas's from South Carolina. Elizabeth Thomas Young eventually ended up in Etowah County, AL which is where she probably died. I'll have to find James Young's current email. Looks like we may be able to make some connections here. Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN
You mentioned a Barbara Handly in your post.I have been searching for someone researching a Susan M.Thomas that married a George Handley / Hanley in Morgon Co.in the 1880'- 90;s.I have the exact date in a book.In 1900 they was in Cullman Co.I can not remenber if they was in Cuullman or Morgan in 1910 but I have the info in a book,If your cousin is from this Susam Thomas line please let me know. She had brothers David Washington Thomas & Willie Nicloas Thomas. Parents was James Thomas & Sarah Lowery. They called Susan Nine. This family was connected to the McCutheon & Higdon family of Morgan Co.Sarah McCutheon married A Lowery.
I'm very intrigued by the recent postings concerning the Young family in what is now Cullman County especially those in Jones Chapel. Several of my families have connections in Jones Chapel. My second cousin, Barbara Handley, told me that our ancestor, James Clark Lewis, sold land to a church in Jones Chapel. I wrote the church some years ago requesting information but I never received a reply. Time permiitting, I will see what I can find out about the Youngs in Cullman County. I don't believe that we are descended from the German Young (Jung) family because I believe the Germans came later after our families were established in Cullman County. So I think I can rule out those families as being in our lines. But I'm very interested in the other, earlier Young families - no matter where they came from. Our family story is that they were originally Scots and they came from South Carolina. I have been in touch with James Young in the past. I'm not sure if I have his current email. He descends from Levi Young who came from New Jersey during the Revolutionary War, settled in South Carolina after the war and raised his family there. Some of his siblings may also have settled there. Levi's lines eventually made their way west mostly ending up in Blount and Etowah counties in Alabama. James Young and I have tried in the past to find a connection between our Young families. So far, no luck. Barry Jernigan Murfreesboro, TN
HI Judy, No, I do not have Joseph Young, sorry...I followed Daniel Young and he was in Jefferson County, AL in 1840, Hancock in 1850, that became Winston County, AL I think they lived in that portion of Winston that became Cullman County, AL in 1877, as Daniel died in 1878 and is buried at Jones Chapel, his widow and Children were in Cullman 1880..I am also following Hazel H Young, but he came out of SC...He is buried at Edison Chapel in Cullman...One of his younger daughters married a Burks and their son married mother's sister... Thank you for writing...We never know where we might break down a wall. Karen, Would you happen to have a Joseph F. Young in your records. He was born in Giles co., TN. (1887), but whatever reason he is in Cullman Co., AL. in 1910. He is with wife Nannie (Williard I think). His mother, listed as Lizzie (looks like Wales), with half sisters, Leitha and Martha. I don't know where he is after 1910. I believe that Leitha married a Golden in Cullman Co. in 1911, at least there is a Leithy Wells to a J.H. Golden listed in marriage records in 1911. Believe Joseph married Nannie Williard in 1905 in Cullman Co., AL., as this is also listed in marriage records. This is somewhat vague, I know, but I just really do not know that much about this family.
