He died on 9 May 1907, he was born in GA, a farmer, 55 yrs., old married, buried at Hopewell, and he died from "hematemesis-hematuria". I typed this at it was written. All of the deaths where he was listed were all handwritten. There are old ledgers that list deaths from 1886. These are the earliest deaths listed in Cullman County. Hope this helps. 1. [ALCULLMA] The First Permanent Catholic Pastor in Cullman, 1877
    2. The Alabama Tribune, 1 Nov 1877 The Catholic Church. Arrival of Father Meurer, the First Permanent Pastor. When the first settlers of our colony located at this point, they at once began to establish themselves permanently in their new homes. Churches and schools received due consideration, and as several of the "pioneers" belonged to the "Mother Church" they felt great solicitude in the establishment of a church in the new colony. After great efforts, they succeeded in building the large and commodious house of worship, now known as the Catholic Church. For some time the later Father Maerz occasionally ministered to the congregation, but at his death Father Bason visited the congregation at long intervals and held services. The want of a permanent pastor grew stronger as the colony advanced, and it was with no small degree of joy that our catholic friends heard that on the 1st November their wish would be gratified by the arrival of Father Meurer, who had been appointed by the Bishop. On last Tuesday however Mr. H. Strahl, the Secretary of the Church received a dispatch stating that Father Meurer would arrive on that day. Our Catholic citizens determined to do their best to welcome him, and notwithstanding the short time allowed them they gathered at the depot in great numbers and gave him a hearty welcome. Several of our citizens displayed the American German flags, and the arrival was saluted by the firing of artillery. The Mayor of our town formally welcomed the Rev. Father, and he was then introduced to the Catholics and the citizens generally. A procession escorted him to the church, and after prayer the Rev. Father, appearing greatly impressed, thanked his congregation for their hearty welcome, and trusted to find a good field for his labor. He closed with an eloquent tribute to Christianity and impressed on his hearers the great principle "Love one another." We trust Father Meurer will like his new appointment and that all, irrespective of religious belief, will welcome him in our midst. To our Catholic friends we wish all success and hope they will find Father Meurer an accession to their number, as he certainly is to our town.

    1. [ALCULLMA] Skeleton on Crooked Creek, 1893
    2. The Alabama Tribune, 16 Feb 1893 Skeleton Found. The bones of a man supposed to have been murdered several years ago was found on the 5th of this month hid under a cliff of rocks, on Crooked Creek in what is called the "narrows" about three miles from Crane Hill in this county. The discovery was made by some boys while strolling along the creek bank, they, not begin able to decide whether they were human bones or not, they returned and gave the information to their parents, who at once repaired to the place and found the skeleton of a man lying among some charred cedar chunks covered by two flat rocks placed over it in the shape of a roof. The skull was found to be cracked and some of the leg bones were burned in two. Nothing was found however to reveal his identify. The bones were placed in a box and are now at the residence of Mr. Noah Burgett. Several years ago a man by the name of Knight who taught school in that neighborhood mysteriously disappeared and blood stains can yet be seen on the door facing and floor of the house where he boarded, and this circumstance may afford some clue to the tragedy.
