    1. Re: [ALCULLMA] Cullman County Public Library in Cullman, AL
    2. Here is the website for the Cullman County Public Library system: http://www.cpls.com It has an online card catalog search but I checked it out by searching for a title containing the words "Winston County" and I only got one result for a book -- The Heritage of Winston County. There are a lot more books that have the words, "Winston County" in the title than just that book. But the website might be informative in other ways -- hours, directions, etc of the various branches of the library system. I will tell you this for now -- looks like they had just about every single "Heritage" book for AL counties there. They have books that are census indexes for lots of AL and southern states counties, they have those volumes of Civil War records, Cullman city directories back to 1963 up to present day but not including all years in between, will indexes for different states and counties, newspaper marriage and death notices for different areas, will abstracts for various states and counties, marriage indexes, several books concerning colonial emigrants as in Virginia, several books concerning land records for various states and/or counties, family surname histories, county and state histories, books on the Civil War, several newspapers on microfilm including the Cullman Tribune, censuses on microfilm -- all AL up to 1930 and then miscellaneous other states' censuses, cemetery books for different counties/states -- particularly (but not exclusively) Alabama, books concerning specific ethnic ancestors (like British Isles, German, etc) and how to research those particular lines, etc, general genealogy reference books. Just a sample of what they have available in the genealogy and archives room of the library. 2. The Grants
    3. I just double checked my emails and if I did receive it, I accidently didn't keep it. I married Douglas Howard Grant, his father was born outside St. Louis. His grandfather Roscoe Grant was born and lived in Mexico, MO. I am the one with Cullman ties (Allbritton) do you want to exchange Grant data? He is not of the North Carolina Grants. Are you familiar with their active group? Sorry I didn't initially respond. I always try to. Somehow your email escaped, Barbara Allbritton-Grant ----- Original Message ----- From: "Del & Carol" <delcarol@iezpc.com> To: <alcullma@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 26, 2007 12:05 AM Subject: Re: [ALCULLMA] Cullman County Public Library in Cullman, AL > Barbara did you get my inquiry about your Grant heritage?? 2. The Grants
    3. Isn't it a shame that a few "nasty" folk (I could have used much more inflamatory adjectives) have caused our librarians to have to resort to such extremes to keep our records safe? That individuals would destroy valuable documents and/or steal them is just so terrible. I realize that it is an inconvenience to have to store one's items but the librarians have been forced into this to protect our heritage. 2. I would suggest that you travel lightly. A notebook to take notes and a writing utensil is about all they will allow in the genealogy room of the library which is kept under lock and key behind a closed door. Anything extra will require storage in a locker they will provide. I don't know if they have a lock for you as well. I suspect they do. My cousin's wife was required to put her purse in a locker and I don't believe she brought a lock with her so the library must have provided her with one. One rainy day I had my notebook inside of a plastic bag to keep it dry. I had a few descendants charts and other loose reports inside of the notebook cover. The librarian told me I could take the notebook inside the library but that I would have to store everything else in a locker. I told him that it was only a plastic bag and only the notebook was inside. He said then that it was okay once he realized that is all that I had with me. I showed him the few reports and other loose papers inside the notebook and he said it was okay to take those into the library as well. I merely folded up the plastic bag and put it in my pocket. The library has a policy of turning on the heat the first time the weather gets cold in the autumn and turning on the air the first time the weather is warm in the spring. And just like the military they don't turn it off once they turn it on. So I would suggest that cold-blooded persons (like yours truly) take a sweater or light jacket to wear at this time of year when visiting the library. It can often be a bit chilly in that back room. You will be required to fill out a form every time you use the materials in the genealogy room. Just general information: name, address, phone number, driver's license # or library card # (if you have one for the Cullman library). They will give you a key so that you can leave the room to get a drink, use the bathroom, etc. In my next post I will tell you what you will generally find in their collection which is quite a good collection in my opinion. 3. Thank you, Barry! The Spain Family is my husband's mother's side (as well as Orr/Ore, etc.). My husband was adopted into the Tate family out of Rockingham County, NC which constitutes the Tate side of my marriage, however, I do have another Tate side on my maiden name (King) side out of Sequatchie County, TN. So far, I've not been able to connect the two lines but am working on it. The King family is out of the Sequatchie County, TN area (and surrounding counties) by way of NC in the early 1800's. Mama King was a Cooley prior to marrying my grandfather, Robert Lee. We have rumors that her mother was Lucy Caroline Hoge/Hogue, etc but no documentation. The Yarbrough family is my step-father's family (my wonderful dad!) and very little is known about them. It's rumored there is a "historian" on the Yarbrough side but, so far, I've not been given a name or contact info on him/her to compare notes. Mom and dad currently live in Marshall county. The Cox/Foster line are my maternal grandparents out of Madison and Limestone Counties as well as parts of TN. Very little is known about them except for 1st cousins who inhabit the wilds of Madison, Hazel Green, Lacey's Spring and Huntsville. A distant uncle, J.B. Webb who has long passed, was highlighted in a Huntsville publication about early living in Huntsville (I forget the name of the periodical) and was reported to have had the 1st drive-thru liquor store in Huntsville running out of his kitchen. We have a lot of USA-type characters in our family, for sure. So far, I'm the only renegade to inhabit Georgia except for a 1st cousin whom I never see or hear from. Given my druthers, I'd rather be in a tropical isle somewhere with a nice cool drink and no worries but the lottery hasn't blessed my house as yet. Well, enough chatter about moi. :) Lynita "Stubby" Tate Marietta, GA FINCH64@aol.com wrote: In a message dated 4/20/2007 10:09:42 AM Central Standard Time, stubbytate@yahoo.com writes: > Absolutely wonderful information! I didn't use them but I would say that you could search on them -- for instance on Ancestry.com. The librarians were very helpful. I believe I might have seen a family history book in the genealogy room that had the surname Spain in the title, BTW. We have tentative connections to Yarbrough as well in Cullman Co -- a collateral line's second wife. His first wife was a Young. Also quite a lot of Georgia reference books there -- census indexes, birth indexes, will indexes, death indexes, county histories, etc. Barry Jernigan ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTHEAST-PIONEERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Stubby Tate Marietta, GA Fund Raising Specialist http://knowledgeonline.youravon.com/content/external/intro/wrapper.htm --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? 2. The Cullman Tribune, November 19, 1908 Beautiful Odd Fellows Home To Be Dedicated April 28, 1909. The Odd Fellows Home at Cullman for the care of the widows and orphans and aged and indigent members of the order will be dedicated on April 28, 1909, the ninetieth anniversary of the organization, which was founded by John Wildy, in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. When completed it will represent an expenditure of fifty thousand dollars and will be the handsomest of the forty homes in operation at the present time in the different states. The home is designed to accommodate three hundred inmates and will be maintained by the levy of a small assessment on the membership of the Odd Fellows throughout the state. The order is rapidly growing and at present has about 24,000 members in Alabama. The style of architecture is Spanish Mission. The building is constructed entirely of concrete with a red tile roof, and is practically fire proof. It is 160 feet in length, 104 feet in width. A splendid observatory caps the main building.

    2. JDBEIN
    3. FORWARD Memories of our growing up years are one of the most valuable treasures a person possesses. Our share of the work is mentioned here but not the happy care-free times of our childhood. These records have been compiled to help our dozens and dozens of brothers and sisters recall the years we were just one large family, a bond that can never be broken. Signed; Mrs. Lillie Franke Traylor, Birmingham (Victor E.) Mrs. Sarah DeFreese, Birmingham (Ira B.) Mrs. Pearl Corley, Birmingham (W.A.) Mr. Theron Shaw, Parrish, Alabama All records are compiled from the Journals of "The Rebecca Assembly, IOOF of Alabama." Starting with the reports when the Home was opened in 1909, and ending when the Home was closed in 1937. These journals remain in possession of the Assembly Secretary: Mrs. W.T. Traylor, Sr., Birmingham, Alabama. Sec. 1964 Reports of Home Committee May, 1910 September 1909: "It is hereby ordered that the keeping up and looking after, the kitchen utensils, crockery, cutlery, linens, bedding, etc., be turned over to the Rebecca Home Committee, after the Home is in operation." "I am requested to ask you if you will kindly furnish and sell some kind of souvenirs at the dedication of the IOOF Home, which will take place in May, 1910, at Cullman, Alabama. In this way with a little cost a nice sum can be realized for the benefit of the Home. There are thirty seven little orphans to be cared for--to be made men and women of and at the present time eight old infirmed brothers and sisters. I am very proud of the willingness to assist in this grand work."
