    3. Hi, In 1973, the Cullman Times in Cullman, Ala. did a series of articles on 100 of Cullman's Progress 1873 to 1973. They interviewed a lot of people and had some very interesting articles. I have a few copies of these. Did not find an interview with your great grandmother in the copies that I have but I may not have the complete series. There is a great article that was published April 22, 1973 "Brindley Mountain -- Scene of fierce Civil War skirmish". This is supposed to be an account of the one Civil War skirmish that took place on what is now Cullman Co. soil. Hope this helps a little. 3. Hi, my fathers family is/was from the Cullman and Blount counties area, with some relatives there yet. My greatgrandmother was Martha Elizabeth McWaters McLeroy, who is buried near Cullman. She died about 1950, aged 90+ years, about 92 l think. As the story goes, when she was a young girl she saw the Union Troops coming through the Atlanta area during the Civil War ( or War for Southern Independence, depending on your outlook!!) and remembered the destruction of property by the Union invaders. This was told to several family members; it has also been said that a newspaper reporter interviewed her and an article was published which recounted her recollections of that period. My request is: does anyone know of this story, or have any documentation, or a copy of this article which they could share with me?? You can imagine that l would love to have a copy of it, especially if a photo was published along with the article ! If there is anyone out there who can lend a hand, l will thank you now in advance for any assistance you can lend. You may reply via the list ( l get the digest mode ) or email me directly. Again, thanks. Mark McLeroy Appling, GA

    3. Margaret, I have typed in about 40 of the cemeteries that are in cullman County. I have just looked there and do not find her name listed at all but there are several other Handleys in those cemeteries. the site address is wwwinterment.com . Maybe this will help some, If you don't find here there someone in this County or elsewhere ought to have one or more of the Cemetery books and maybe they can look it up for you. I had two of them borrowed but J. C. came and got them a couple of weeks ago or I would do it for you. Good Luck. 3. Looking for anyone researching James Johnson born 1832 in Tn.He died in 1905 and is buried in Powell Chapel Cem.on the Cullman-Morgon Co.Al.line.I'm not sure what his wife's name was.I have several possible wives,Sarah ? Anna? and Laura Blakenship born in Va.James childern was,Henry Thomas [Bud],JOhnson, married first Betty Wilhte, second ,Julie Chesser,Mary Margaret Elizabeth Johnson married William Sherman Powell,Laura E.Married William Jordon,James Alexander Johnson [Alec] married Margaret Turney,George Coggins .Does anyone know if the 1870 Cullman Co.Census is in Book form. I found a James Johnson in Cullman Co.in 1870 with wife Anna I think but I can't read the childern's names. The film is in very bad shape.

    3. I sure wish I could find some new blood on this Susan Thomas Hanley/Handley line.I would love to know where she is buried. There is a great mystery to her birth. Her father was suppose to have been killed the day after the Civil War ended.Does anyone know what day and year the war was over.Susan was born in 1868.The story goes, told to me by a great grandaughter of James M.Thomas and Sarah Emaline Lowery, that James was killed during the Civil War andhis body found in a cave in Ga.Sarah walked 300 miles from Ga.with her three childern,Dave,Wilie, and Susan in her arms.Strange thing is all census shows these childern all born in Al.But I do believe Sarah walked to Al. from Ga.becouse this story was told by her son Dave.I believe James deserted his family. This might not be interesting to anyone but me,but there might be Thomas researchers out there,as Dave lived in Cullman Co. at one time.

    3. Margaret, that was a good idea and maybe now you will get some results. I have had lots of luck on just uploading what I had onto rootsweb.
