You said: "There is a marriage record of Thomas J. Sims to Nancy J. Welch, married on 21 November 1872 in Crenshaw County, Alabama. Since this date is AFTER John Franklin was born so if I am looking at the right people, then Nancy can't be the mother of John Franklin." This date (21 Nov 1872) is actually some 14-15 years BEFORE the birthdate of John Franklin SIMS, not AFTER--therefore, I see no reason (if the marriage date you provided is correct) that this couple could not have been John Franklin's parents.
