    1. Red Level/Read Level
    2. I looked up Red Level, Alabama (the one in Covington County, Alabama) today on the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) web site. http://geonames.usgs.gov/redirect.html http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic About Red Level the site said: Variant Name: Read Level Citation: Ward, Wyley D. Early History of Covington County, Alabama, 1821-1871. Huntsville, Ala.: Privately printed, 1976. If anyone has a copy of this book, I would appreciate hearing the whole quote about Red Level once being Read Level. I'm wondering if it's named after someone named READ. Thanks for any assistance. Cheryll

    3. Rom page 161 of Early History of Covington County, Alabma 1821-1871 by Wyley Donald Ward: "On June 29, 1857, a post office was established at the house of Alexander Atkinson and he was made postmaster. The name of the post office was listed in the official register as Read Level, but it was probably intended to be Redd Level, a name reportedly derived from a nearby level field owned by Atkinson's neighbor, Joshua Redd. Other than the official post office register, the name of the post office and the surrounding area became known and was generally referred to in most early documents as Red Level, thus on May 26, 1876 when James Watson was appointed postmaster, he had the name officially changed to Red Level."
